- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,932, dated February 10, 1885.

Application filed November 7, 1884. (Merlot) To whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JONES W. WILDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Parkville, in the county ,of Kings and State of New York, have. invented a new and useful Improvement in Means for Sealing up Milk Bottles, Jars, &c., reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a bottle provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the upper portion of a bottle having my improvement. Fig. 3 is a detached front view of ribs forming a part of my improvement.

The object of my improvement is to provide means for sealing bottle-stopper-fastening devices to the sides of bottles with sealingwax and other similar adhesive substances 4 capable of bearing the impression of a seal,

and thereby prevent tampering with thecontents of bottles or other vessels.

The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then be specific ally 'set forth in the claims,

In said drawings, E represents a bottle or jarof suitable size, having its mouth closed by means of a cover, A, of metal or other suitable material, provided with a washer, a, of slightly yielding substance, resting upon the edge of the bottle. Transversely across the top or within the body of the cover is a hollow ridge or groove to receive the bail-wire B. This wire is bent in a curve to increase -its resilience at the points I), where it leaves the cover. Its ends are bent at Z) toward the body of the bottle to form journals for the side loops of the operating-lever O. The ends 0 of said lever are retained in loops formed upon the neck-wire F, that is secured, as usual, under the neck-band of the bottle. The form given to the middle loop of the opcrating-lever O is a curve that substantially fol-' lows and rests against the bottle when the latter is closed.

To secure and seal the lever O in this position is the main object of myinvention, and for this purpose I provide the'side of the bottle with two ribs or curved corrugations, D, projecting from or upon the surt'aceof the bottle. These ribs are located one above and one under the position occupied by the lever O, to form between them a clear opening for the reception of the lever and a sufficient amount of sealing-wax or other suitable material to completely cover the middle portion of said lever, and also receive the seal of the shipper upon the wax.

The seatt'or the wire between the ribs D may be the contour of the bottle, as in Fig. 1; or there may be between the ribs asurface, G, elevated above the contour of the bottle, and having a groove, 9, in continuation of the openings between the ends of the ribs, and the lever O of the fastening device will then rest in the openings between the ends of the ribs and in the groove In this construction the elevated surface G forms the seat for the waX, which also passesinto the groove 9 and around the stopper-fastener.

Various forms may be given to the ribs or projections D. They may be'molded or blown out of the glass of the bottle, or may be produced separately and made to adhere to the surface of the bottle or other vessel.

Having now-fully described my invention, I claim.

l. A bottle provided with ribs projecting from its side under the neck-band thereof, in combination with a bottle-stopper fastening having an operating-lever adapted to rest against the side of the bottle, between its projecting ribs, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. The combination of a bottle having a projecting neclcband, and under said band two ribs or projections capable of retaining sealing-wax between them, with a bottle-stopper fastening constructed to have a portion thereof enter the groove between said ribs and be retained therein, substantially as and for the purpose described.
