RINALDO STORTI ATTO United States Patent 3,117,779 CHILDS CARGUSEL Bruno Savegnago and Rinaldo Etorti, both of 283 Mary St, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada Filed Sept. 18, 1%2, Ser. No. 224,391 3 (Ilairns. (Cl. 27230) The present invention relates to a childs carousel and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally there is provided a childs carousel consisting of a base preferably of tripod style having cen trally afilxed thereto an upwardly extending spindle. A hand ring is afilxed by suitable means to the upper portion the spindle and a cylinder is journalled upon the lower portion of the spindle. The cylinder has afixed thereto by suitable means a plurality of circumferentially spaced seats and the device is operable by the children seated in the seat grasping the hand ring to move the seat therearound. In another form of the invention, the structure is quite similar but only two seats are provided. In this form of the invention a yoke is pivoted to the cylinder and the seats are attached by suitable arms extending therefrom in diametrically opposed directions. Means is provided for locking the yoke to the cylinder so that the seats may only travel in a circular path. However, by disengaging the locking means, the seats are enabled to act as a seesaw or teeter totter. The secsaw arrangement may be used while the device is otherwise at a standstill or may be used simultaneously with the carousel movement by the children grasping the hand ring as aforesaid. Various novel features are included in the two forms of the invention.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a childs carousel which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and yet effective and efficient in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combined seesaw and carousel.
A still further object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, a novel seesaw construction having novel means for locking the same against oscillatory movement while permitting rotary movement of certain seats forming part of the invention.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a prospective view of an embodiment of the invention,
FIGURE 2 is a view similar to FIGURE 1 but showing a modified form the invention may assume,
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged fragmentary elevational view illustrating a yoke and locking device forming parts of the invention showing the same in unlocked condition,
FIGURE 4 is a fragmentary view similar to FIGURE 3 but showing the device in locked condition,
FIGURE 5 is a view similar to FIGURE 3 but showing the same at right angles thereto,
FIGURE 6 is a View similar to FIGURE 4 but taken at right angles thereto,
FIGURE 7 is a fragmentary sectional view taken substantially along line 77 of FIGURE 3, and
FIGURE 8 is a sectional view taken substantially along line 88 of FIGURE 3.
1 eferring more particularly to the drawings, there is shown therein a carousel having a base generally indicated at 10 and in this case consisting of three divergent legs 11 forming a tripod type base. Centrally aifixed to the base 19 is an upwardly extending shaft 12 having an attaching ring 13 afiixed to the upper portion thereof. A series of downwardly and outwardly dependent circumferentially spaced arms 14 interconnect the attaching ring 13 with a hand ring 15.
A cylinder 16 is journaled upon the shaft 12 above the base 10 in any suitable manner and has a plurality of up per spokes 17 extending outwardly and downwardly therefrom from the upper portion thereof and a like series of lower spokes or arms 18 each extending outwardly and immediately below one of the spokes 17. It will be seen that the spokes 17 and '18, in each case, have attached to their outer ends a childs seat 19. In the operation of this form of the invention, it will be apparent that the children using the device will first seat themselves in the seats 19 and thereafter move the same in a circular path by grasping the hand ring 15 and propelling themselves in such path, it being apparent that the spokes 17 and d3, being attached to the cylinder 16, will cause this portion of the apparatus to pivot upon the shaft l2. In the form of the invention illustrated in FIGURE 2, there is again provided a base it) and tripod legs 11, a vertical spindle or shaft '12, an attaching ring 13 aflixed to the shaft -12, the downwardly dependent arms 14 supporting a hand ring 15.
In this case, however, there is provided a cylinder 20 which is journaled on the lower portion of the shaft 12 above the base it A pair of diametrically opposed pins 21 extend outwardly from the lower portion of the cylinder 2% and a yoke 22 of generally oval shape is pivoted upon the pins 21. Immediately above the pin connection 21 the yoke is provided, in each case, with a vertically extending arm 23 which is bifurcated, as indicated at 24, in the upper end thereof. A lock ring 26 is slidably mounted upon the upper portion of the cylinder 2% and is provided with a pair of fixed outwardly extending diametrically opposed lock pins 27 each adapted to engage in one of the bifurcations 24.
From each of the narrower ends of the yoke 22 there extends upwardly and outwardly a support arm 28 upon the outer end of each of which is mounted a seat 29. Brace rods 3% interconnect the seats 29 with the upper end portions of the arms 23. A set screw 31 is threadably mounted in the lock ring 26 and is adapted to hear when screwed inwardly upon the outer face of the cylinder 29.
In this form of the invention, it will be apparent that the lock ring 26 may be lowered until the lock pins 27 become engaged in the notches or bifurcations 24. This will prevent the yoke 22 from making any relative movement with respect to the cylinder 20. To insure that the pins 27 remain in locked condition, the lock ring 26 may be kept against movement by screwing the set screw 31 inwardly to bear against the cylinder 20.
In this condition, the device may be used only as a carousel in the manner above-described with regard to FIGURE 1, that is to say, the children may be seated in the seats 29 and move the seats in a circular path about the shaft 12 by grasping and pulling upon the hand ring 15.
Again, the locking ring 26 may be moved upwardly so that the lock pins 27 become disengaged from the arms 23 and maintained in such upper position as shown, for example, in FIGURES 2 and 5, in this condition of the apparatus, it will be apparent that the children seated in the seats 29 may use the apparatus as a seesaw or teeter totter by oscillating the yoke 22 and, of course, the seat 29 attached thereto by the elements 28 and 30 so that the seats 29 will move upwardly and downwardly. If desired, the children may move in a circuitous path while utilizing the seesaw portion of the invention by again grasping the hand ring 15 in the manner heretofore described to move in a circuitous path While at the same time utilizing the seesaw.
While but two forms of the invention have been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many ,minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
