. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SHUBAEL COTTLE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COLLAR-BUTTON.
BPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,107, Med January 20, 1885.
Application filed November 522, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
My present invention is an improvement thereon; and it consists in constructing the back double, as hereinafter described.
I propose constructing the said back either with or without a small central aperture C0111- municating with the post, and in accompanying drawings both modes of construction are represented, Figures 1 to 4, inclusive, exhibiting one mode, and Figs. 5 to 8, inclusive, the other.
I will preface further description of these modes of manufacture by stating that, inasmuch as they involve per so nothing essen-' tially novel, save in respect to the result or article produced, I omit detailed description of the special successive manipulations required to draw or swage the blank into the ultimate forms desired, since they (the manipulations) are well known, as will be readily understood or devised by those skilled in the art.
Referring, then, in the first instance, to Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, I will state that the first step in the process of manufacture of a button having a double back with a central aperture therein consists in drawing or swaging a blankto wit, a thin metal disk-into the form represented by Fig. 1,wherein the hollow post a is shown projecting from the flat upper (or inner) portion of the back b,whose. outer (lower) portion yet remains to be formed from the pendent circular flange c. In the next swaging operation this right-angular flange c is upset and deflected inward at an acute angle, as shown in Fig. 2, and by the next two operations it is reduced to parallelism with the inner (upper) portion, as illustrated. in Figs.
3 and 4. Thus a collar-button is produced (see-Figs. 6, 7) until the form shown in Fig.
8 is attained that is to say, a double back, 1), whose face or outer (lower) portion is entire or without an opening. Thus, by either mode of manufacture above described I produce a collar-button whose back is double and yet solid, or in one piece with the hollow post, and which is, therefore, superior in the important qualities of solidity, strength, du-
rability, and ornamental finish or effect.
It is obvious that sleeve-buttons of a certain class may be manufactured in the same manner and form as collar-buttons.
What I claim is 1. The improved collar-button, substan' tially as described, the same consisting of the double back and hollow post formed in one piece, and said post being provided with a suitable head.
2. The collar -button having a double or hollow back, 1;, which is formed entire or without an opening therein, and in one piece with the hollow post, a, which is provided with a suitable head, substantially as shown and described.
