RAZOR- GUARD.

SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,067, dated January 20, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HUBERT DUFUF, a subject of the King of Belgium, residing at Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Razor-Guards, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved adj ustable razor-guard, and the nature of my invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a razor having my improvements, and in position in a hand for use. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a razor and guard combined, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 00 m of Fig. 2.

B is a bar having a flat side approximately at right angles to the cutting-edge of the razorblade D, and parallel thereto. The bar B unites the ends of a series of bars, I), extending transversely over one side of the razor from a plate, H, adapted to lie against one side of the blade, and uniting the other ends of the bars I).

m is a hinge in the handle I, to the end of shank h, and which hinge is coincident to the hinge of blade D.

c is a set-screw passing through a transverse slot in shank h and to the shank of the razorblade.

E is a thumb-piece at an angle to plate H, and located near the back of the blade and near its longitudinal center.

e e are two clips upon opposite ends of plate H, and adapted to inclose the ends of the blade; and f f are shoulders left by removing stock from the ends of the blade D, to form stops against which the clips 0 e bear to prevent the slipping of the guard relative to the cutting-edge of the razor.

The bars I) (shown in profile, Fig. 3) are curved in the reverse direction from the near side of blade D, to form with it a cavity for receiving the lather and hair, and their lower parts, after approaching the cutting-edge, are from said edge in a gradual curve bent to co incide with bar B, the surface outlined by said bars b and formed by bar B constituting a face which enables the razor to be rocked to any angle in use, while still safe. The long shank 71, having a hinge at m, enables the plate H to from the cuttingedge upon said hinge, the length of the shank h causing the bar B and cutting-edge to be parallel in effect upon any relative adjustment. The plate H, when adjusted, is quickly secured by the screw 0. The plate H, firmly secured at hinge on and by screw 0, affords a strong point of attachment close to the blade to the thumb-piece E, by means of which, when the implement is grasped, as shown in Fig. 1, it can be used with more effect than in the usual way, although the razor may also be operated as in general use. The guard may be, by releasing screw 0, swung upon hinge 1n entirely away from the razor-blade, while remaining secured to the handle I, to enable the parts to be cleansed or the blade to be honed.

I am aware that it is not new to provide a guard for the side of a razor-blade, such being shown in Patents No. 206,473 and No. 237,008, of 1878 and 1881, respectively, and I do not claim, broadly, such a device.

Now, having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The within described improved razorguard consisting of a plate, H, provided with bars 1), adapted to leave a concavity between them and the side of the blade, and adapted to curve outward from the cutting-edge to coincide with the surface ofabar unitingtheir ends, provided with a bar, B, approximately at right angles to and removed from the cutting-edge, having a shank, 71, adapted ,to lie upon the blade-shank and be hinged, with the blade, to the handle I, and having means, as c, for adjustably clamping it (the said shank) to the blade, and having clips e 0 adapted to clasp the ends of the razor.

The combination, with a guard adapted to lie close to the blade of a razor, and means for securing it thereto, of a thumb-piece, E, adapted tosupport one finger of the hand in close proximity to the back of the razor, and at a point thereon near its longitudinal center, as and for the purpose set forth.
