-It is a more .specific object of the invention to provide a pedestal-type support which comprises vertically disposed, telescoping tubular sections having a compression spring and bolt connection which limits the travel in the axial direction of the uppermost section relative to the bottom section and with a locking mechanism which is adapted tolock the two sections in any desired position of adjustment.
It is a still more specific object of the invention to provide a pedestal-type support for a chair, table or other object which comprises a pair of vertically disposed, telescoping tubular sections and a connecting bolt which is fixed in the one section and has a limited sliding movement in the other section with a separating compression spring and withk the outside section having an axial slot :and a clamping device associated with the same for constricting the open end of the section to clamp onto the innermost section at any position of rotation and/or elevation within the limits of travel of the two sections.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from a consideration of the supporting pedestal which is shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevation of a pedestal incorporating the principal features of the invention which is suitable for supporting a vehicle seat or similar object;
FIGURE 2 is a rear elevation, to an enlarged scale, of the pedestal shown in FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a cross section taken on the line 3-3 of FIGURE 2; and
FIGURE 4 is a fragmentary cross section taken on the line 4 4 of FIGURE 2, to a still larger scale.
Referring to FIGURE 1 particular-ly, the pedestal 10 is shown as used for supporting a railway Caboose seat, the bottom portions of the latter being indicated in phantom line at 11. 'Ihe seat structure 11 is mounted on the top of the pedestal preferably with a slide arrangement of the kind commonly used for mounting the front seat in an automobile so that the chair structure 1,1 may be adjusted forwardly or backwardly relative to the pedestal 10.
The pedestal 10 comprises a base or bottom assembly 12 consisting of a bottom plate or platform member 13 which is adapted to be secured in generally horizontal position on the floor or other support and an upstanding tubular section 14 of substantial height and cross sectional dimension. The tubular section or member 14 comprises a lower portion 15 which is welded or otherwise secured lat its bottom end to the bottom plate member 13 and reinforced or braced by vertically disposed tri-angular brace plates 16 welded to both members and extending radially of the tubular member 14. The upper portion of the tubular member 14 has its outside diameter reduced somewhat to provide a peripheral shelf 17 above the bracing plates 16. The tubular member 20 depends from a top support plate 22 and is reinforced by triangular brace plates 23 which are welded to the members and extend radially of .the tubular member 29. A guide pin 24 extends axially of the tubular member 20 downwardly from the top plate 22 and through an aperture 25 in an abutment plate 26 secured within the upper portion 18 of the lower tubular member 14. A compression spring 27 is confined between the top plate 22 and .abutment plate 26 and the guide pin 24 carries a washer and nut assembly 23 on its lower end which limits the upper and Ilower vertical movements of the tubular member 20. The tubular member 20 has an axially extending slit 30 in the wall thereof and an associated clamping device 31.
The clamping device 31 comprises two tubular socket forming sections 32 and 33 which are disposed in horizontal alignment and secured on opposite sides of the slit 30. The tubular sections or socket forming members 32 and 33 are adapted to receive a clamping bolt 34 having a head 35 bearing against the outer end of the clamping tube 33 and held in position in the clamping tube 33 by a set screw 36. The threaded end of the bolt 34 extends outwardly of the outer end of the clamping .tube 32 and is received in an internally threaded nut forming tubular member 37 which is secured on the lower end of an operating lever or handle member 38, the latter extending upwardly and having a knob 4t) within reach of a person seated in the chair or seat 11. The handle member 38 is adapted to be swung back and forth to rotate the tube 37 on the bolt 34 and draw the two clamping tubes 32 and 33 together .thereby clamping the outer tubular member 20 onto the top portion 18 0f the tubular member 14 in .any position within the limits of rotational and vertical travel of the tube member 20.
The use of the pedestal will 4be obvious ftom the foregoing description. When employed for supporting a railway caboose seat as indicated in FIGURE 1, the seat 11 will be mounted on the top plate 2-2 by a suitable assembly permitting forward and backward movement relative to the pedestal. A person sitting on the seat 11 may swing the handle 38 to unlock the two assemblies whereupon the spring 27 will be compressed according to the weight on the seat and the seat may be rotated about the axis of the pin 24 to the desired position whereupon the handle 38 may be swung to draw the clamping tube members 32 and 33 toward each other and lock the upper assembly 21 relative to the lower assembly 12.
While particular materials and specific details of construction have been referred to in describing the pedestal illustrated, it will be understood that other materials and equivalent structural details may be resorted to within the spirit of the invention.
We claim:
1. A seat supporting pedestal comprising a fixed base assembly having a bottom plate member and an upstanding, upwardly opening tubular section forming a lixed post member, a vertically and rotatably adjustable top assembly having a seat carrying top plate and a depending tube member with its lower end portion telescoped over the upper end portion of said post member, a guide pin depending axially in said tube member, a cross plate secured in said post member intermediate its top and bottom ends and having an aperture for receiving the lower end of said guide pin in sliding relation therein, a nut on the end of said guide pin for engaging said cross plate to limit the upward movement of said top assembly, a compression spring on said guide pin with its lower end seated on said cross plate and its upper end seated against said top plate, said tube member having a slot in the bottom margin of its side wall which extends axially Vof said tube member, a'pair of socket forming tuber members secured in transverse axial alignment on op-y .the IatterQaAnut'forming niember'ovnY lthe free end of Vsaid v y `clamping bolt' and na handle fc'nrming lever extendingnpwardlyV from'said nut forming member so that its upper end iswithin easy reach of a person on the seat whereby the tube sections vmay be drawn towardseach other yby swinging movement ofv'themhandle tov constrict'the lower end of said depending ,tubei'member'andkclamp vthetop assembly inadjnstedjposition on said postmemY ber. Claims (1)

1. A SEAT SUPPORTING PEDESTAL COMPRISING A FIXED BASE ASSEMBLY HAVING A BOTTOM PLATE MEMBER AND AN UPSTAND ING, UPWARDLY OPENING TUBULAR SECTION FORMING A FIXED POST MEMBER, A VERTICALLY AND ROTATABLY ADJUSTABLE TOP ASSEMBLY HAVING A SEAT CARRYING TOP PLATE AND A DEPENDING TUBE MEMBER WITH ITS LOWER END PORTION TELESCOPED OVER THE UPPER END PORTION OF SID POST MEMBER, A CROSS PLATE PIN DEPENDING AXIALLY IN SAID TUBE MEMBER, A CROSS PLATE SECURED IN SAID POST MEMBER INTERMEDIATE ITS TOP AND BOTTOM ENDS AND HAVING AN APERTURE FOR RECEIVING THE LOWER END OF SAID GUIDE PIN IN SLIDING RELATION THEREIN, A NUT ON THE END OF SAID GUIDE PIN FOR ENGAGING SAID CROSS PLATE TO LIMIT THE UPWARD MOVEMENT OF SAID TOP ASSEMBLY, A COMPRESSION SPRING ON SAID GUIDE PIN WITH ITS LOWER END SEATED ON SAID GUIDE PIN AND ITS UPPER END SEATED AGAINST SAID TOP PLATE, SAID TUBE MEMBER HAVING A SLOT IN THE BOTTOM MARGIN OF ITS SIDE WALL WHICH EXTENDS AXIALLY OF SAID TUBE MEMBER, A PAIR OF SOCKET FORMING TUBE MEMBERS SECURED IN TRANSVERSE AXIAL ALIGNMENT ON OPPOSITE SIDES OF THE SLOT ADJACENT THE LOWER END OF SAID DEPENDING TUBE MEMBER, A CLAMPING BOLT SEATED AT ONE END IN ONE OF SAID SOCKET FORMING TUBE MEMBERS AND EXTENDING IN SLIDABLE RELATION THROUGH THE OTHER SOCKET FORMING MEMBER WITH A THREADED END PROJECTING FROM THE LATTER, A NUT FORMING MEMBER ON THE FREE END OF SAID CLAMPING BOLT AND A HANDLE FORMING LEVER EXTENDING UPWARDLY FROM SAID NUT FORMING MEMBER SO THAT ITS UPPER END ISE WITHIN EASY REACH OF A PERSON THE SEAT WHEREBY THE TUBE SECTIONS MAY BE DRAWN TOWARDS EACH OTHER BY SWINGING MOVEMENT OF THE HANDLE TO CONSTRICT THE LOWER END OF SAID DEPENDING TUBE MEMBER AND CLAMP THE TOP ASSEMBLY IN ADJUSTED POSTION ON SAID POST MEMBER.
