MPRovEMENTiN sToPPERs FOR sEALmG cANsYANDJARS.v
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 31,856, dated March 26, 1861..
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. VILSON, of VilIiamstown, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Stopper for Preserve-J ars and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, inwhich- Figure l represents an axialsectionof my stopper. Fig. 2 is a plan with the clampingscrew and the upper disk removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures. The subject of my said invention is a stopper consisting of an elastic ring clamped between disks, and expanded by metallic seg ments within it,which are forced outward by the conical neck of the clamping-screw, as will be hereinafter explained.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation with reference to the drawings.
A and B are respectively an upper and lower metallic disk, the former of which `is perforated in the center, and the latter formed with a female screw, b, to receive a thumbsc'rew, C, the neck c of which tapers downward, as shown, for the object hereinafter explained.
D represents a series of metallic segments7 i ing connected, as seen in Fig. l, the stopper is inserted in the mouth of the jar or bottle which it is desired to close, and the screw being rotated its conical neck c forces the segments D outward, thereby expanding the ring `E. The compression of the ring between the disks acts to hold it in proper position, and to` l conne its expansion to a radial direction as well as to increase the expandingI action.
What I claim as new and .of my invention herein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The combination of the two clampingdisks A B, expanding-segments D, and elastic ring E, constructed, arranged, and operating together in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
JOSEPH E. wiLsoN.
Nfitnesses:
SETE HILLMAN,
J. ALFRED BOBINE.
