Description
April 1965 SHIGEHARU KURODA 3,180,385
HAND BASKET Filed April 29, 1963 Ill ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,18%,385 Patented Apr. 27, TEES Bee 3,180,385 HAND BASKET Shigeharu Kuroda, 15 Nakakosaka, Fuse, Osaka Prefecture, Japan Filed Apr. 29, 1963, Ser. No. 276,537 1 Claim. (Cl. 150-48) This invention relates to a hand basket, particularly for use by women in carrying various materials or articles from place to place.
An object of my invention is to provide a novel hand basket which is made of synthetic plastic or synthetic resins, and which can be quickly and easily assembled, and which is Very inexpensive to manufacture.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel hand basket which is attractive in appearance and is very durable so that it will last a very considerable length of time.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a novel hand basket of the character stated, which will retain its original shape for great lengths of time, and which is light in weight, and which can be quickly adapted to receive various sizes, shapes, or quantities of materials.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detailed description and the appended claim.
In the drawing:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective of my hand basket.
FIGURE 2 is a vertical sectional view of the frame portion of the basket.
FIGURE 3 is a side elevation of the complete basket.
FIGURE 4 is a sectional view taken on line 44 of FIGURE 3.
FIGURE 5 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view of one type of handle attaching means.
FIGURE 6 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of another type of handle fastening means.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the nu meral 1 indicates a basket bottom which is formed of a suitable synthetic resin, preferably of the thermal setting type. The bottom plate 1 is solid and is shaped to the desired configuration of the bottom of the basket, substantially as shown. Also the bottom 1 is made of sulficient thickness to sustain the Weight which might be carried in the basket. An upper ring 2 is also formed of a thermal setting plastic and is preferably resilient so that it can be either carried as an enlarged ring, as in FIG- URES 2 and 3, or it may be compressed at the middle by means of a strap 3 if it is desired to partially inclose the upper end of the basket. The strap 3 is attached at one end to one side of the top ring 2, and at the other end to a suitable button or fastener 4. A plurality of vertically extending ribs 5 extend between the bottom 1 and the top ring 2, and may be either integrally formed with the ring and bottom, or these ribs may be fixedly attached at both ends by means of a thermal method of attachment, or by use of a suitable adhesive. As here shown, the ribs are ell) integral with the bottom 1 and the top ring 2. To form the side of the hand basket I prepare a plurality of relatively narrow tapes 6 which are wound or braided circularly around the basket to form an inclosure. The tapes 6 are preferably braided around the ribs 5 and these tapes are superimposed one on another, that is, the edges of the tapes abut so as to form a complete inclosure, and also one which is pleasing and artistic in appearance. The ends 7 of the tapes 6 overlap and are permanently secured by a thermal method, or by means of a suitable adhesive. The tapes 6 thus will never loosen or slacken, and since they abut each other the sides of the hand basket will remain intact and without spreading to leave holes or to otherwise provide an unsightly appearance.
One or more handles 8 are provided at the upper end of the hand basket, and the handle is fixedly mounted on the top ring 2. The method of attaching the handle consists of a large headed button 9 which screws into a nut 10 positioned on the inside of the ring 2. The threaded stud 11 of the button 9 screws into the nut 10, as shown in FIGURE 5. The method of constructing the handle attachment can be varied, as shown in FIGURE 6, where the button 12 is provided with a threaded stud 13 which screws directly into the top ring 2, to thus fixedly attach the ends of the handle to the ring.
Having described my invention, I claim:
A hand basket formed of a synthetic resin comprising a solid bottom plate,
a top ring spaced above the bottom plate,
a plurality of vertically extending ribs extending from .the bottom plate to the top ring, and integrally formed with the bottom plate at one end and to the top ring at the other end,
a plurality of superimposed tapes braided circumferentially around said ribs and extending from the bottom plate to the top ring, said tapes, top ring and ribs all being formed of a flexible synthetic resin,
the ends of said tapes overlapping and being thermally fixedly secured together,
and a handle detachably mounted to said ring by a button, said button including a threaded stud extending through the handle and the top ring.
