Description

March 16, 1965 A. L. JOHNSON 3,173,461
ADJUSTABLE HACKSAW Filed Aug. 3. 1962 "I-N V ENTOR ALVIN L.JOHNSON fwd- ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,173,461 ADJUSTABLE HACKSAW Alvin L. Johnson, 70 Piedmont St., Worcester, Mass. Filed Aug. 3, 1962, Ser. No. 214,736 2 Claims. (Cl. 145-34) The instant application is a continuation-impart of abandoned application Serial No. 74,317, filed December 7, 1960.
This invention relates to a new and improved adjustable hacksaw and represents an improvement on the invention disclosed in my Patent No. 2,944,574, issued July 12, 1960.
The principal object of the present invention resides in the provision of a hacksaw frame which is quickly and easily adjustable to take different sizes of saws, say for instance, ten and twelve inch saws, by a very simple manipulation of the frame.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of new and improved means for locking the ends of the hacksaw blade in the frame, and to this end there is pro vided an novel mechanism which comprises a crossslotted member at each end of the frame for reception of the hacksaw blade at said ends, in combination with an annularly movable ring-like member having an interruption therein for receiving the blade, and upon being turned, locks the blade into the slots.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of the above-described means for locking the blade in the frame at the ends of the blade, said means also providing for angularly adjusting the blade relative to the frame and the handle portion thereof.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which FIG. 1 is a view in elevation illustrating the invention;
FIG. 2 is an enlarged section taken longitudinally through the adjusting mechanism for the frame;
FIG. 3 is a view in elevation, partly in section, on an enlarged scale, illustrating one of the blade-holding means;
FIG. 4 is a section taken along the line 44 of FIG. 3; and
FIG. 5 is a view in elevation, part in section, illustrating the other blade-holding means.
Reference is made to my above-identified patent for some of the details of construction of the present hacksaw. However, the same comprises any kind of handle which may be desired and convenient such as is indicated by the reference numeral 10. This handle is provided at its upper end with an internal bore or the like 12 for the reception of a fixed tubular member 14 and at the inner end of the bore there is a cross-slot or the like 16 which loosely accommodates a relatively large thumb nut 18.
The tube 14 is fixed in position and slidingly and telescopically receives an interior tube 20. Tube 20 may be curved to a right-angular position as at 22 to provide an end at 24 for holding a boss for detachably securing the blade 26 with reference to a like but oppositely positioned boss or member on the handle at 28. This will be hereinafter described.
The tube 20 is provided with a longitudinal slot at 30 terminating in a shoulder 32. Tube 14 has provided thereon by any desired means such as a ring 34, an interiorly extending pin 36 engaged in slot 30. This pin prevents tube 20 from rotating and from being withdrawn out of association with tube 14 and to this end it is rovided with an interior boss or stop 38, which together with shoulder 32, provides limiting means for the relative longitudinal adjustment of tube 20 within tube 14.
3,173,461 Patented Mar. 16, 1965 At its inner end, tube 20 is provided with a fixed nut 40, see FIG. 2, and in engagement with this nut there is an interrupted screw 42 fast to the nut 18. When the nut 18 is turned in the appropriate direction, it causes the blade to be tensioned and clamps the tube 20 with reference to the handle.
However, if it is desired to extend tube 20 to take a larger or longer blade 26, then the nut 18 is turned in the opposite direction until the nut 40 is disengaged from the portion 44 of the screw thread, and then the tube may be shifted to engage the portion 46 of the screw-thread with nut 40. Thereupon tension is again applied to the blade 26 which of course may be as much longer than the blade 26 shown in FIG. 1 as the distance between the portions 44 and 46 of the interrupted screw.
Screw 42 has a blank 43 that is less in diameter than the screw threads and when tension on the blade has been released the nut is ocmpletely free of the screw, either in the blank between threads 44 and 46 or at blank 43. Occasionally, in the absence of blank 43, the nut becomes stuck at the end of the thread 44 by being wedged, but
this cannot happen with blank 43 present.
At each end of the frame, i.e., at 24 and 28, there are provided removable bosses which are disclosed in FIGS. 2, 3 and 5. These bosses are indicated as to the end of the frame at 24 by reference numeral 48 and this boss comprises a separate, removable cylindrical member which has an annular indentation or groove 50 therein this groove receiving a cross pin 52 holding the boss 48 so it can rotate but cannot shift axially. The boss may be contained in a pair of opposite apertures in the tubing forming the end 24. The member 48 being cylindrical, extends to the right as shown in FIGS. 1 and 3 and terminates in a slit portion, the slit being indicated by the reference numeral 54, see FIG. 4. This slit 54 receives an end of the blade 26 and the split portion has a transverse through aperture therein as indicated at 56 through which extends a ring 58 locking the blade in position.
Ring 58 has an opening 60 by which the blade is admitted into the slit in position shown in FIG. 3. By turning the ring and misaligning the opening 60 with the blade, the blade is held in position when the blade is tightened by means of the thumb-piece 18 as above described.
The blade holder at the opposite end of the frame is substantially the same except that the part at 28 has an opening therein which faces the apertures in the end 24 of the tube 20 and in this opening theme is a cylindrical member 62 which is substantially the same as that of 48 but reversed. It has an annular groove 64 and it is held in position by a pin 66 so that it can totate but it is not capable of axial motion. It is also slit at 68 to receive the end of the blade 26 and the slit portions have holes 7 0 therein for the reception of a ring 72 similar to that at 58.
Once the blade is connected at its two ends as above described, it is only necessary to turn the screw in the prop-er direction in order to imp-art the necessary degree of desired tension thereto, and this is done in either adjustment of the tubular member 22 as will be clear. Thus the blade is held with the desired tension thereon whatever size of blade is being used. Thus it is seen that the blade itself is angularly adjustable to any position and that when positioned as desired, tension is applied by the wheel 18 turning the screw 42 so that the blade is then firmly held.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is:
1. A hack-saw comprising a handle, a tubular member in fixed relation thereto and extending therefrom, an
