Description
March 2, 1965 M. NOZETTE 3,171,555
PLASTIC MOLDED BOX Filed Dec. 27, 1962 III United States Patent 3,171,565 PLASTIC MOLDED BOX Morris Nozette, Chicago, IlL, assignor to Bradley industries, Inc Franklin Park, 11]., a corporation of Illinois Filed Dec. 27, 1962, Ser. No. 247,fi18 7 Claims. (Ci. 220-18) This invention relates to a plastic molded box.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a plastic molded box in which merchandise is boxed and wherein said box may be supported in a hung position on the hook of a display board or the like.
Another object of this invention is to provide a molded box comprising a box body and lid or cover therefor provided with means whereby the box and the contents therein may be hung on a peg board or the like, and wherein said means may be readily broken off from the box to leave a complete box.
Another object of this invention is to provide a box of the foregoing character in which the sides of the box body and the sides of the lid or cover are provided with snap locking means for detachably securing the lid or cover to said box body.
Another object of this invention is to provide a box formed of plastic material and injection molded in a single shot ejection, in which the box body is provided with an extension and the lid is provided with a similar extension whereby said box unit may be supported on a peg board or other display, and wherein said extensions may be readily broken off from the remainder of the box unit.
Another object of this invention is to provide a very simple and inexpensive box for merchandise which is also used to display the merchandise in a hung position.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent as this description progresses.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a view showing the box forming this invention supported on a peg board.
FIG. 2 is a view of the container portion or box body, looking into the inside thereof.
FIG. 3 is a view of the lid, looking into the inside thereof.
'FIG. 4 is a sectional view taken on lines 4-4 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 5 is a sectional view taken on lines 55 of FIG. 4.
FIG. 6 is a sectional view similar to FIG. 4 with the extensions on the container and lid broken away, and
FIG. 7 is a view similar to FIG. 6 with the lid reversed to form a completely closed box.
The invention comprises a box generally indicated at 10, having a box body or container portion generally indicated at 12 and a removable lid or cover therefor generally indicated at 14. The box body has an extension generally indicated at 16 and the lid or cover 14 also has an extension generally indicated at 18. The parts are molded of plastic, and the box body and extension, and the lid and extension are each integrally molded in a single shot ejection. The box body or container portion 12 has a bottom 29, side walls 22, a bottom end wall 24 and a top end wall 26.
Each of the side walls 22 is formed with a laterally extending car 23 extending from the top edge thereof and spaced substantially medially of the length of the box body. Extending outwardly of the top end wall 26 is the extension 16 which is at right angles to the top end wall 26. The top end wall 26 does not extend the full height of the sides 22 but terminates short of the upper edges thereof so that the wall 15 of said extension is below the upper edges of the side walls 22.
The extension 16 is provided with an outwardly turned continuous short flange border 29 which extends across See the top and sides of the Wall 15 of the extension and terminates on the same plane as the outer edges of the side walls 22. A space 30 is provided on each side between the end of the side walls 22 and the sides of flange 28. The connection between the top end wall 26 and the extension 16 is grooved as at 34 to provide a weakened wall surface at which point the extension 16 is ultimately broken away and detached from the box body. The extension is provided with a central opening 36.
The lid or cover generally indicated at 14 is provided with a top wall 38, spaced short side walls 40, and bottom end wall 42. Said side and bottom end walls are so spaced so that the lid may be positioned over the box body and nest adjacent the side and bottom end walls of the box body.
A pair of spaced slots or openings 44 are provided in the lid or cover 14, said openings being formed by providing a cutout or recess in each of the side walls adjacent the top wall 38, so that the opening is between the wall 38 and the sides 40. Openings 44 are alined with the spaced ears 28 on the box body so that the ears may enter said openings. This may be accomplished by positioning the lid or cover over the box body and slightly compressing the sides of the box body which will cause the side walls of the box to move inwardly and thereby permit the cars 28 to enter the slots 44 and detachably lock the lid to the box body.
The lid has an extension 18 which is generally rectangular shaped and the same shape as the extension 16 on th box body. The lid extension 18 is formed as a continuation of the top wall 38 and a transverse groove 46 is formed between the upper end of the top wall 38 and the wall 17 of extension [18 to provide a weakened area therebetween. The extension 18 is also provided with an inwardly continuous short flange border 48 which extends across the top and sides of the wall 17 of the extension and which terminates on the same plane as the outer edges of the sides 40 of the lid. A space 50 on each side is provided between the side walls 40 and the sides 48 of the extension. The wall 17 of the extension 18 is also provided with a central circular sleeve 52 integrally formed therewith which extends into the opening 36 of extension 16. As will be understood, when the lid or cover is secured to the box body, the lid extension 18 envelopes the box body extension 16, as best seen in FIG. 4.
With this arrangement a completely enclosed box 10 is formed when the lid is applied and merchandise is contained within the box, which box may be supported on the book 54 of peg board 56, or the like, with the hook extending through the sleeve 52 and opening 36. If displayed on a peg board or the like, it is preferred that the box be made of a transparent plastic material so that the contents thereof are visible when thus supported.
When a plurality of such boxes are displayed on a peg board, the material displayed is encased and the customer may merely remove one of the boxes from the peg board by sliding same off the hook. After the merchandise with the box is purchased and is not intended to be rehung on the peg board, then the box body extension 16 and the lid extension :18 may be broken away along their respective weakened lines 34 and 46, as shown in FIG. 6, which will then leave a box and cover of rectangular shape without said extensions, and leave a clean surface on the brokenoif edges, at which edges the extensions were connected.
When the extensions are broken away, as seen in FIG. 6, an opening 58 is provided between the top end wall 26 of the box body and the lid or cover .14. To close this opening the cover 14 is reversed and positioned on the box, as shown in FIG. 7, so that the bottom end wall 42 of the cover is adjacent the upper end wall 26 of the box body, thus closing what would otherwise have been the opening 58.
There is thus provided a very neat and compact box unit which may be readily supported on a peg board or the like and wherein the means by which the box is hung or supported may be broken away from the box by the customer so that a rectangular shaped box remains It will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made from. the. foregoing without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
