No. 325,528 2 Claims. (Cl. 51-98) This invention relates to a novel sharpener especially designed and adapted for sharpening Phillips-type screwdrivers.
More particularly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a sharpener having means for supporting a bit of a Phillips screwdriver so that the point and two edges of the bit can be simultaneously sharpened.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sharpener which can be adjusted to sharpen bits of Phillips screwdrivers of different sizes.
Various other objectsan'd advantages of the invention will hereinafter become more fully apparent from the following description of the drawings, illustrating a present- 1y preferred embodiment thereof, and wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevational view, partly in vertical section and partly broken away, of the sharpener;
FIGURE 2 is a top plan view thereof;
FIGURE 3 is a side elevational view of the sharpener looking from left to right of FIGURES 1 and 2;
FIGURE 4 is a fragmentary side elevational view, partly in vertical section, looking from right to left of FIGURES 1 and 2, and on a somewhat enlarged scale;

Referring more specifically to the drawings, the Phillips screwdriver sharpener in its entirely and comprising the invention is designated generally 8 and includes a support,
designated generally 9, comprising an upright post or standard 10 which is secured at its lower end to a base plate 11. The base plate 11 is adapted to rest on a suitable supporting surface such as a bench-top or table-top 12 to be secured thereto by fastenings 13. The post or standard 18 may be of circular cross section and tubular,
as shown, and the upper end thereof may be closed by a suitable cap 14.
A shaft 15 is journaled in diametrically aligned openings 16 in the upper part of the standard 10 and has a crank '17 rigidly secured to one end thereof. A large gear 18 is fixed to the shaft 15 between the standard 10 and crank 17. The inner side of the gear 18 bears against an external boss 19 of the standard 10 by which the gear is spaced from said, standard. Aretaining ring 20 is detachably mounted on the opposite end of the shaft 15 and bears against a part of the exterior of the standard 10 for holding the shaft 15 correctly positioned in said standard. a 1
A shaft 21 extends through and is journaled in diametrically aligned openings 22 of the standard 10, which are disposed below the openings 16;. A pinion 23 is fixed to one end of the shaft 21 and is disposed beneath and in meshing engagement with the gear wheel 18 and is maintained spaced from the standard 10 by an external boss 7 24 of said standard. A grinding wheel 25 is disposed on the standard 10 directly beneath and spaced from the boss and a stud 33 is anchored in and projects outwardly from the boss 32. One end of a barforming an arm 34 engages pivotally on the stud 33 and bears against the outer end of the boss 32. A nut 35 threadedly engages the threaded outer end portion 36 of the stud 33 and a clamping washer 37 is disposed on said stud between the arm 34 and nut 35.
As best seen in FIGURES 2 and 5, the arm 34 has a channel 38 attached to and rising from its upper edge 39 at its other, outer end and which includes a bottom or bed portion 411 of arcuate cross section and side walls 41 which extend upwardly therefrom in diverging relation to one another. The sidewalls 41 at their outer ends have extensions 42, between the upper ends of which extend a bridge member 43 having a centrally disposed threaded opening 44 to receive a setscrew 45 which is threaded downwardly therethrough.
The grinding wheel 25 has a periphery of V-shaped cross section, asseen in'FIGURE 6, consisting of corresponding beveled opposite sides 46 which merge with one another at the peripheral edge 47 of the wheel. As seen in FIGURES 1 and 2, the plane of the peripheral edge 47 coincides with the plane of the arm 34.
To utilize the sharpener 8-, the setscrew 45 is manually retracted upwardly so that the shank 48 of a conventional Phillips-type screwdriver 49 can be inserted longitudinally inward through the channel 38 and beneath the setscrew 45, to position the bit 58 of the screwdriver'in approximately its position of FIGURE 4, above the upper edge 39 of the arm 34 with one of the four longitudinal grooves 51 of the bit facing upwardly. The arm 34 is then swung upwardly and the shank 48 is adjusted longitudinally in the channel 38 until a part of the grinding wheel periphery 47 contacts the point 52 of the bit 50 and portions of the beveledsides 46 are disposed in said upwardly facing groove 51 and in contact with adjacent sides of the two longitudinal ribs 53 which define said upwardly facing groove 51. With the parts thus disposed, the nut 35 is tightened to clamp the arm 34 in this correct angularly adjusted position relative to the standard 111, and the setscrew 45 is tightened downwardly to clamp the shank 48 immovably between the upwardly diverging channel walls 41.
The knob 54 of the crank 17 is manually engaged to revolve said crank and with it the shaft 15 and gear wheel 18 to thereby rotate the pinion 23 and shaft 21 at a greater speed than the shaft 15. The grinding wheel 25 turns with the shaft 21 for grinding the point 52 and the adjacent sides of the ribs 53, between which the grinding wheel engages, simultaneously, for sharpening the point 52 and for removing any burrs or roughened areas along said adjacent sides of the ribs.
so that the bit 50 and shank 48 can be retracted slightly and rotated 90. This is accomplished without releasing the arm 34, so that when the bit 50 is again displaced inwardly the point 52 will again contact the grinding wheel periphery 47 and the sides 46 will engage in another of the grooves 51 and contact other adjacent sides of two I of the ribs 53, so that the aforedescribed grinding operation can be repeated, after tightening the setscrew 45. It will be readily apparent that the aforedescribed operation is repeated four times and with the tool bit and shank turned after each sharpening operation, for sharpening the point 52 on four sides and for grinding both sides of each of the four ribs 53.
It will be readily apparent that any number of corresponding screwdrivers may be thus sharpened without changing the adjustment of the arm 34. The sharpener 8 is obviously adapted to sharpen Phillips-type screwdrivers having shanks and bits of different diameters and After this grinding operation has been completed, the setscrew 45 is backed off a where such variations exist, the arm 34 will have to be angularly adjusted. The downwardly converging disposition of the sides 41 enables screwdriver shanks of different diameters to be readily wedged and clamped therebetween by tightening the setscrew 45.
Various modifications and changes are contemplated and may obviously be resorted to, without departing from the function or scope of the invention as hereinafter defined by the appended claims.
We claim as our invention:
1. A sharpener for Phillips-type screwdrivers comprising an upright support, a grinding wheel journaled on said support for rotation about a horizontal axis, means carried by the support for rotating the grinding wheel, a work holder including an arm, means pivotally mounting an inner end of the arm on the support about an axis disposed beneath and parallel to the axis of rotation of the grinding wheel, said arm having an upwardly opening channel at its outer end with a central plane of said channel coinciding with a central plane of the grinding wheel and said channel being adapted to receive a Phillipstype screwdriver shank, said grinding wheel having a periphery of V-shaped cross-section to simultaneously sharpen both sides of a groove and the bit point of the shank, a set screw carried by the work holder for releasably clamping the shank in said channel, and means associated with the means pivotally mounting the arm for adjustably clamping said arm to the support with the Work holder in different angularly adjusted positions relative to the grinding wheel.
2. A sharpener as in claim 1, said means for rotating the grinding wheel comprising a manually actuated crank and gear drive disposed on an opposite side of the support from the grinding wheel and work holder.

Claims (1)
1. A SHARPENER FOR PHILLIPS-TYPE SCREWDRIVERS COMPRISING AN UPRIGHT SUPPORT, A GRINDING WHEEL JOURNALED ON SAID SUPPORT FOR ROTATION ABOUT A HORIZONTAL AXIS, MEANS CARRIED BY THE SUPPORT FOR ROTATING THE GRINDING WHEEL, A WORK HOLDER INCLUDING AN ARM, MEANS PIVOTALLY MOUNTING AN INNER END OF THE ARM ON THE SUPPORT ABOUT AN AXIS DISPOSED BENEATH AND PARALLEL TO THE AXIS OF ROTATION OF THE GRINDING WHEEL, SAID ARM HAVING AN UPWARDLY OPENING CHANNEL AT ITS OUTER END WITH A CENTRAL PLANE OF SAID CHANNEL COINCIDING WITH A CENTRAL PLANE OF THE GRINDING WHEEL AND SAID CHANNEL BEING ADAPTED TO RECEIVE A PHILLIPSTYPE SCREWDRIVER SHANK, SAID GRINDING WHEEL HAVING A PERIPHERY OF V-SHAPED CROSS-SECTION TO SIMULTANEOUSLY SHARPEN BOTH SIDES OF A GROOVE AND THE BIT POINT OF THE SHANK, A SET SCREW CARRIED BY THE WORK HOLDER FOR RELEASABLY CLAMPING THE SHANK IN SAID CHANNEL, AND MEANS ASSOCIATED WITH THE MEANS PIVOTALLY MOUNTING THE ARM FOR ADJUSTABLY CLAMPING SAID ARM TO THE SUPPORT WITH THE WORK HOLDER IN DIFFERENT ANGULARLY ADJUSTED POSITIONS RELATIVE TO THE GRINDING WHEEL.
