Description

DEVICES INCLUDING AN OPENWQRK BASE FRAME FOR PROVIDING HANGER SUPPORT OF WRITING IMPLEMENTS Filed June 27, 1962 INVENTOR Fm NC/5 M, fi/Mfs HTTORNEV United States Patent Oil ice 3,162,313 Fatented Dec. 22, 1964 3,162,313 DEVICES INCLUDING AN OPENWORK BASE FRAME FOR PROVIDING HANGER SUPPORT OF WRITING IMPLEMENTS Francis M. Aimes, Chatham, N.Y. Filed June 27, 1962, Ser. No. 295,695 Qlaims. (Cl. 211-69) This invention relates to devices for supporting writing implements in hanger position above a supporting surface, wherein the device includes an openwork multiple foot base, including an integral upwardly extending hanger bracket or frame portion having, at its upper end, means for hanger support of a writing implement in connection therewith. More particularly, the invention includes a device of the character described, wherein the base is fashioned to form a support for other articles or elements in connection therewith.
The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:
FIG. 1 is a side view of a device made according to my invention, with part of the construction broken away and in section;
FIG. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of FIG. 1 and diagrammatically illustrating part of the structure of FIG. 1 in dot-dash lines; and
FIG. 3 is a view of the lower portion of the device looking in the direction of the arrow 3 of FIG. 1.
In illustrating one adaptation and use of my invention, I have shown a device for the support of a single writing implement, it being understood, however, that two or more of the implements can be supported by slight modifications in the form of the hanger bracket or frame used in conjunction with the device, the present showing being to illustrate one of the simple forms of construction which can be employed. Considering FIG. 1 of the drawing. the device comprises a suitable base, generally identified by the reference character 10. The base, in the construction shown, comprises a generally L-shaped rod 11 and a curved or arched rod 12 secured together where they intersect, as at 13. The long member 14 of the rod 11 terminates at its free end in a ball foot 15; whereas, the upstanding short member 16 terminates at its upper end in a rounded ball 17. The ends of the rod 12 terminate in rounded or ball feet 18, as clearly noted in FIGS. 2 and 3 of the drawing, thus forming a tripod base struc ture 10 for support of the device. The base 10 can be suitably fashioned for support of other articles or elements in conjunction therewith and this fashioning can be varied to suit many types and kinds of articles or ele ments. However, in the construction shown, a coil spring 19 is fixed to 14 with the coils 20 of the spring upstanding with respect to 14 and in close relationship to each other to provide means for support of letters, papers or the like between the coils of the spring intermediate 16 and the upstanding hanger bracket or frame 21, which is fixed to the ball or other foot 15. For simplification, the spring 19 is simply outlined in dot-dash lines in FIG. 2.
The upper end portion of the hanger 21 is curved forwardly, as seen at 22, or, in other words, over 19 and terminates at its free end in an enlarged ball or other member 23 of magnetically attractable material, or including magnetically attractable material. At 24 I have shown one form of writing implement which, in the construction shown, diagrammatically illustrates a ball point pen, the writing end of which is indicated at 25. The
upper end of the pen has a bore 26, in which a cylindrical magnet 27 is mounted, the magnet being attracted to the member 23 in the hanger support of the implement 24 in the manner diagrammatically seen. It is also preferred that a magnetically attractable cap 28 be fixed over the upper end of the writing implement 24 to form a finish at the upper end of the implement. With this construction, it will be understood that the implement 24 can be quickly and easily removed from the member 23 and reattached thereto when desired by simply bringing the upper cap end 28 of the implement in close proximity to the member 23 and, when this member is a ball, as shown, the implement can be brought into close proximity thereto at any angle and, when released, the implement will assume the perpendicular position, as diagrammatically shown.
Devices of the type and kind under consideration can be mounted on any type of a surface support to position the implement 24 in accessible position for use and, as previously stated, the base can be any type of openwork frame structure having a plurality of supporting feet and of a contour to receive and support the article or element to be arranged thereon. In some simpler forms of the device, the article or element support, as at 1.9, can be dispensed with and the base frame utilized simply to support the hanger 21 on a suitable surface.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a rod-like base defined by two rods arranged at right angles to each other, one rod being arched upwardly and having enlarged foot ends, the other rod having a long horizontal member with an enlarged foot end and a short upright member fixed to the central portion of the arch of the first rod, an upstanding hanger rod fixed to the foot of said long member and including a curved upper portion arranged over and in widely spaced relationship to the base, the upper end of the hanger rod having an implement supporting ball member directly over the arched rod, a writing implement for coupling and uncoupling said ball member, and said implement and ball member having cooperating means for magnetically supporting the implement in hanger position with respect to said ball member.
2. A device as defined in claim 1, wherein said long member of the base includes means for support of elements in connection therewith.
3. A device as defined in claim 2, wherein said last named means comprises a coil spring fixed to and extending the major portion of the length of said long member.
4. A device as defined in claim 1, wherein the cooperating magnetic means comprises a magnet supported in the upper end of the implement and attracted to said ball member.
5. A device as defined in claim 4, wherein the upper end of said implement includes a cap of magnetically attractable material.
