3,023,944 HOLLOW BODY FORME!) FROM FOLDABLE SHEET This invention relates, in general, to a hollow body formed from a sheet of foldable material, and has particular relation to a novel coin bank especially adapted for use by children.
One of the main objects of the invention is the provision of a new and improved form of pre-scored and predie cut sheet which can be set up and interlocked to form a secure coin bank and in which no adhesive is required to join the parts together.
Another object is to provide simple and improved means for securing or locking the side, top and end walls of the body eiciently and effectively together.
Another object is -to provide a structure of the class described having wing sections joined along lines of fold to side wall sections and adapted when set up to be swung t-o upwardly or downwardly inclined positions to present different appearances.
Another object is to provide a structure of the class described wherein there is a coin or money opening in one of the end walls and ornamentations on the outer surfaces of the wing sections and on the outer surfaces of the side wall sections and the end walls.
Further features and advantages and adaptations of the invention will be apparent from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it being understood that the invention is limited only within the scope of the appended claims and not to the particular embodiment selected for illustration.

The blank or foldable sheet, illustrated at 10 in FIG- URE l, is made of a single sheet of foldable material, preferably in the form of a pre-die cut and pre-scored sheet of tough, hard finished fiber paper, although cardboard or other material may be employed within the scope of the present invention.
The blank or foldable sheet 10 comprises a rst end Wall 11; a rst side wall divided into two sections 12 and 13 joined along fold lines 14 and 15 respectively, to one side of the end Wall 11; a second side wall divided into two sections 16 and 17 joined along fold lines 18 and 19 respectively to the opposite side of the end wall 11; and a rst pair of wing sections 20 and 21 joined along a fold line 22. One of the rst pair of wing sections, i.e., the wing section 20, is joined along a fold line 23 to the side wall section 12. The other wing section 21 is joined along a fold line 24 to the side wall section 13.
A second pair of wing sections 25 and 26 are joined along a fold line 27. One of the second pair of wing sections, i.e., the wing section 25, is joined along a fold Patented Mar. 6, 1962 ice line 28 to the side wall section 16. The other wing section 26 is joined along a fold line 29 to the side wall section 27.
A second end wall 30 is joined along a fold line 31 to the side wall section 16.
A pair of top wall sections 32 and 33 are joined along fold lines 34 and 35, respectively, to the side wall sections 12 and 16.
A pair of bottom wall sections 36 and 37 are joined along fold lines 38 and 39, respectively, to the side wall sections 13 and 17.
Tabs 40 and 41 are joined along fold lines 42 and 43, respectively, to the top wall sections 32 and 33.
Similar tabs 44 and 45 are joined along fold lines 46 and 47 respectively to the bottom wall sections 36 and 37.
A first strap 48 is joined along a fold line 49 to the end wall 11. The strap 48 has a slot 50 through which the tabs 40 and 41, when folded together, are inserted to join the top wall sections 32 and 33. The tabs 40 and 41 have end portions 51, 52 and 53, 54, respectively, joined `to the tabs by fold lines 55, 56 and 57, 58. These end portions 51, 52 and 53, 54 are foldable laterally beneath the strap 48 after inserting the tabs 40 and 41 through the slot 50 to secure the tabs in the slot 50. v
A second strap 60 is joined along a fold line 61 to the end wall 11. This second strap 60 has a slot 62 through which the tabs 44 and 45, when folded together, are inserted to join the bottom wall sections 36 and 37. The tabs 44 and 45 have end portions 63, 64 and 65, 66, respectively, joined to the tabs along fold lines 67, 68 and 69, 70. These end portions 63, 64 and 65, 66 are foldable laterally over the strap 60 after inserting the tabs 44 and 45 through the slot 62 to secure the tabs in the slot 62.
Tabs 72, 73 and 74 are joined along fold lines 75, 76 and 77, respectively, to the side wall sections 12, 13 and 17. Slots 78, 79 and 80 are provided along the respective fold lines 75, 76 and 77` Tabs 80, 81 and 82 are joined along fold lines 83, 84 and 85 to the second end wall section 30. In setting up the bank or hollow body, the tabs 80, 81 and 82 are inserted through the respective slots 78, 79 and 80 efliciently and effectively to secure or lock the adjacent ends of the side wall sections and the end wall section 30 together.
The tabs 80, 81 and 82 have end portions 87, 88; 89, and 91 and 92, respectively, joined to the respective tabs by fold lines 93, 94; 95, 96; and 97, 98. These end portions 87, 88; 89, 90; and 91, 92 are foldable laterally within the tabs 72, 73 and 74 after inserting the tabs 80,
81 and 82 through the slots 78, 79 and 80 to secure the tabs 80, 81 and 82 in said slots.
The upper strap 48 has a tap 100 joined to the free end thereof by a fold line 101. In setting up the hollow body, the tab is folded down into the body. The end wall section 30 has an upper tab 102 joined thereto by a fold line 103. This tab is folded in over the adjacent end of the upper strap 48 and between this strap and the adjacent ends of the top wall sections 32 and 33.
The lower strap 60 has a tab 105 joined to the free end thereof by a fold line 106. In setting up the hollow body, the tab is folded inwardly into the body. The end wall section 30 has a lower tab 108 joined thereto by a fold line 109. This tab is folded under the adjacent end of the lower strap 60, and between this strap and the adjacent ends of the bottom wall sections 36 and 37.
The wing section 21 has a tab 110 joined thereto by a fold line 112. In folding the wing sections 20 and 21 together, the tab is folded to position between these wing sections. The tab 110 has an end portion 113 joined 3 a fold line 117. In folding the wing sections 25 and 26 together, the tab 116 is folded into position between these wing sections.
In setting up the bank or hollow body from the blank form illustrated in FIGURE l, the tabs 110 and 116 are folded in, and the wing sections 2t! and 21 and the wing sections 25 and 26 are folded together so that sections 20 and 21 are in a substantially parallel relation, as are the wing sections 25 and 26.
The tabs 40 and 41 are then folded together by folding the side sections 12, 13 and 16, 17 toward one another along fold lines 14, and 18, 19. The folded together tabs 40 and 41 are inserted through the slot 50 in the strap 48, and the end portions 51, 52 and 53, 54 are folded laterally beneath the strap 48 to secure the tabs 40 and 41 in the slot 5ft.
The tabs 44 and 45 are similarly folded together and inserted through the slot 62 in the strap 6ft and the end portions 63, 64 and 65, 66 are folded laterally over the inner side of the strap 6i) to secure the tabs 44 and 45 in the slot 62.
The closing together of the side wall sections to the form illustrated in FIGURES 3 and 4 is then completed, and the tabs 8), 81 and 82 on the end wall 30 are inserted into the slots '78, '79 and 80.
The bank or hollow body is thus set up to the form illustrated in FIGURES 3 and 4. The-end wall 11 is shown as having a slot or opening 120 through which coins, etc., may be inserted into the interior of the hollow body. When the bank is filled, or its contents ready for deposit, it may be taken to the bank for deposit of the contents, and a new bank or hollow body may be furnished.
In FIGURE 3 the wing sections 2f), 21 and 25, 26 are illustrated in downwardly inclined positions substantially coextensive with the upper side wall section, and extend downwardly therefrom. The wing sections are illustrated of generally triangular form and thus present downwardly directed pointed ends, but this may vary within the scope of the present invention.
In FIGURE 4, the wing sections 2t), 21 and 25, 26 are illustrated in upwardly inclined positions substantially 2o-extensive with the lower side wall sections 12 and 16, and extending upwardly thereabove.
The wing sections 20, 21 and 25, 26 are swingable to the positions illustrated in FIGURES 3 and 4 about the fold lines 23, 24 and 28, 29.
The. outer surfaces of the side wall sections 12, 13 and 16, 17 are preferably ornamented, for example, by printed matter 121 thereon` The outer surfaces of the end walls 11 and 30 and the outer surfaces of the top and bottom wall sections are preferably ornamented as shown at 122. The outer surfaces of the wing sections 20, 21 and 25, 26 are also preferably ornamented as shown at 124 and 125. The ornamentations on the outer surfaces of the wing sections 20 and 25 are preferably different from the ornamentations on the outer surfaces of the wing sections 21 and 26, or differently colored, to provide different appearances, depending upon whether the wing sections are turned downwardly, as illustrated in FIGURE 3, or upwardly, as illustrated in FIGURE 4. This provides a novelty and interest for the child.
When the structure is set up as illustrated in FIGURES 3 and 4, the wing sections are two-ply and of a character to make the structure rigid and sturdy. And the manner in which the sections are interlocked is effective to secure or lock the sections together and to provide a sturdy and rigid structure.
It is to be understood that the ornamentations illustrated in FIGURES 3 and 4 are merely illustrative and may vary widely within the scope of the present invention. Moreover, it will be understood that a great variety of figures and shapes ornamented as desired may be Pm duced by only slight changes in the lines of fold and the shapes of the various portions of the blank, with variations in ornamentations as suitable or desired.
Therefore, the embodiment of the invention disclosed in the drawings and the specification is for illustrative purposes only, and it is to be expressly understood that said drawings and the specification are not to be construed as a definition of the limits or scope of the invention, reference being had to the appended claims for that purpose.
I claim:
l. A hollow body formed from a sheet of foldable Vmaterial having a first end wall, a first side wall divided into two sections, each joined along fold lines to one side of said end wall, a second side wall divided into two sections each joined along fold lines to the opposite side of said end wall, a first pair of wing sections joined along a line of fold, one of said first pair of wing sections being joined along a line of fold to one of said first side wall sections, the other of said first pair of wing sections being joined along a line of fold to the other of said first side wall sections, a second pair of wing sections joined along a line of fold, one of said second pair of wing sections being joined along a line of fold to one of said second side wall sections, the other of said second pair of wing sections being joined along a line of fold to the other of said second side wall sections, a second end wall joined along a line of fold to one of said side Wall sections, a pair of top wall sections, one joined along a line of fold to one of said rst side wall sections and the other joined along a line of fold to the adjacent second side wall section, a pair of bottom wall sections, one joined along a line of fold to the other of said first side Wall sections and the other joined along a line of fold to the other second side wall section, tabs joined along lines of fold to said top and bottom wall sections, a first strap joined along a line of fold to said first end wall and having a slot in which said tabs on said top wall sections are engageable to join said top wall sections, a second strap joined along a line of fold to said first end wall and having a slot in which said tabs on said bottom wall sections are engageable to join said bottom wall sections, tabs joined along lines of fold to said first and second side wall sections other than the one to which said second end wall is joined with slots along said last lines of fold, and tabs on said second end wall and engageable in said last slots to join said second end wall to said side wall sections.
2. A hollow body formed of a sheet of foldable material according to claim l, wherein the sheet of foldable material is in the form of a pre-cut and pre-scored sheet of tough, hard finished fiber paper.
3. A hollow body formed of a sheet of foldable material according to claim 1, wherein the tabs joined to the top and bottom wall sections have end portions foldable laterally to secure said tabs in the slots in which the tabs are engageable.
4. A hollow body formed of a sheet of foldable material according to claim l, wherein the body is in the form of a childs bank having a coin opening in said first end Wall.
5. A hollow body formed of a sheet of foldable material according to claim 1, wherein the Outer surfaces of said Wing sections have ornamentations thereon adapted to be brought to view by swinging said wing sections to upwardly and downwardly inclined positions about the fold lines joining said wing sections to said side walls sections.
6. A hollow body formed of a sheet of foldable material according to claim l, wherein the outer surfaces of said wing sections have ornamentations thereon adapted to be brought to view by swinging said wing sections to upwardly and downwardly inclined positions about the fold lines joining said wing sections to said side wall sections, the outer surfaces of said side wall sections and the outer surfaces of said end walls also having ornamentations thereon.
7. A hollow body formed of a sheet of foldable material according to claim 1, wherein there are tabs joined along fold lines to one of said rst pair of wing sections and to one of said second pair of wing sections, said tabs being disposed between said wing sections when they are folded together and each of said tabs having end portions foldable laterally to position within the tabs on said side wall sections.
8. A hollow body formed from a sheet of foldaible material and having opposite end walls provided with upwardly diverging side edges and upwardly converging side edges, rst upwardly diverging side walls disposed across said upwardly diverging edges, second upwardly converging side walls disposed across said upwardly converging edges, wing sections joined along fold lines to said upwardly diverging and upwardly converging side walls and swingable to positions substantially coextensive with said upwardly diverging or said upwardly converging side walls, tabs joined along fold lines to each of said rst side wall sections and to one of said Second side wall sections Wirth slots along said fold lines, an end wall joined along a fold line to the other of said second side wall sections, and tabs on said end wall `and engageable in said slots to join said end wall to said side wall sections.
