INVENTOR Harold L. Greene ATTORNEY:
3,tl19,91tl BGW 'IIE I-IGLDER Harold L. Greene, 1329 NW. 2nd Ave, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Filed Mar. 4, 1359, Ser. No. 797,290
Ill Elairns. (1. fil -87) This invention relates to magnetic supports and more particularly is concerned with a permanent magnet holder for supporting and displaying magnetic objects such as conventional clip-on type bow ties.
Although holders for supporting a Wide variety of magnetic objects are Well-known applicant is unaware of any such device that is completely satisfactory for the purposes of supporting or displaying the well-known clip-on type bow ties. In most instances, these ties are kept in a dresser drawer along with numerous other articles and often tend to get wrinkled and outof shape when not in use. Inasmuch as a bow tie of this type cannot be readily pressed like a four-in-hand tie, it is often prematurely discarded because of unsightly wrinkles or creases after relatively little use and before the tie is actually worn out.
The present invention provides a novel magnetic holder particularly suited for supporting bow ties to keep the ties unwrinkled and in good condition. By employing the support of the present invention the possibility of incurring unsightly wrinkles through the careless placement of ties when not in use is completely obviated. In addition, the holder of the present invention incorporates means for connecting a series of similar holders together as is often desirable in stores and other show places for displaying a large number of magnetic articles. The holder is of relatively rugged construction presenting a pleasing appearance and is relatively inexpensive to produce. Important features of the present invention include the employment of a structural arrangement whereby a plurality of permanent magnets are either embedded or securely received in a non-magnetic member and a series of horizontal projections or shelves molded as a single integral unit with the body of the holder. These shelves function to not only support the magnetic objects but provide means for properly spacing the objects along the length of the holder for display purposes.
It is therefore a primary object of the present invention to provide a novel holder for clip-on type bow ties and similar magnetic articles.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a bow tie holder of simple rugged construction having a pleasing appearance.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a permanent magnet holder particularly suited for use in displaying bow ties.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a bow tie holder having means for connecting a plurality of such holders together.
These and further objects and advantages of the invention will be more apparent upon reference to the following specification, claims and appended drawings where- FIGURE 1 is a front view of a bow tie holder constructed in accordance with the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is a rear view of the bow tie holder shown in FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a side view of the holder of FIGURES 1 and 2 illustrating the manner in which the holder supports a plurality of bow ties;
FIGURE 4 is a vertical cross section of the bow tie holder of the present invention taken along line 44 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 5 is an additional vertical cross section taken along the line 5-5 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 6 is a horizontal cross section taken along line 6-6 of FIGURE 5;
FIGURE 7 is a perspective view of a bow tie holder and clip attachment for supporting four-in-hand ties and belts;
FIGURE 8 is a side view of the lower end of a bow tie holder showing the clip secured to the holder; and
FIGURE 9 is an enlarged view of the welded clip junction of FIGURES 7 and 8.
Referring to the several figures of the drawings, the bow tie holder of the present invention generally indicated at 10 in FIGURE 1, comprises an elongated body 12 of insulating material enclosing a series of vertical-1y spaced horizontally extending permanent magnets 14 best seen in FIGURE 2. Elongated body 12 whch may be constructed of any suitable non-magnetic material such as reinforced paper, fiber board, wood and the like is preferably made as shown in the drawing from any of the well-known plastics. Furthermore, while the rear portion of body 12 intermediate spaced magnets 14 is cutaway as indicated at 16 in FIGURE 2, it is apparent that, if desired, these cut-away portions may be omitted and the body formed as a solid elongated and substantially bar-like member.
Extending lengthwise of body 12 and received in the front face 13 thereof, are a pair of parallel rectangular metallic rods 20 and 22. As clearly seen in FIGURES 1 and 3, rods 20 and 22 extend substantially the entire length of the holder and are in contact with each of the magnets 14.
Positioned at spaced points along the length of the holder and formed integral with the front face 1.8 are a plurality of horizontally extending vertically spaced projections or ledges 32 for supporting a plurality of clip-on type bow ties as best seen for example in FIGURE 3. A pair of conventional bow ties including a knot portion 34 and metallic clips 36 for securing the ties to a shirt collar are illustrated in FIGURE 3. As can be seen, each of the elongated bars 20 and 22 extend approximately of an inch beyond the front face 18 of body 12 providing clearance for the inner portion of the bow tie knot as indicated by dotted lines at 38 in FIGURE 3. In this manner, the bow ties are positioned and partially supported by ledges 32 with metallic clips 26 in contact with magnetic bars 20 and 22, extending outwardly on each side of the bow tie knot 34 It is essential that rods 20 and 22 extend a substantial distance outwardly from face 18 to provide clearance for the bow tie knot rather than being mounted flush with the face since flush mounting of the knots prevents these rods from contacting the clips 36 making it practically impossible to mount the bow ties in the preferred horizontal position for display. By means of the clearance indicated at 3-8 and the cooperating ledges 32, the holder of the present invention makes it possible to not only properly space each of a series of bow ties along the length of the bow tie holder but in addition, makes it possible to securely maintain the bow ties in a horizontal position similar to the position assumed by the tie when placed on theshirt of a wearer.
Formed integral with body 12 at the upper end of the bow tie holder is a substantially U-shaped plastic portion terminating in a second plastic portion 'dzjsha'ped to simulate a small bow tie. The lower end of body portion12 is formed with a solid block of plastic 44 including recesses 46 and'48 as best seen in FIGURE 2 shaped to receive integral portions 49 and 42 formed at the top of each holder.
As can be seen when top portions 40 and 42 are received in cooperating recesses 46 and 43 on an adjacent holder they serve as means for securely attaching the holders together so that a plurality may be placed end to'end in seriesto support a large number of how ties as may be desirable in a store or similar show place in which'the number of ties to be displayed exceeds that which may be mounted upon a'single holder. Integral portion 42 in assuming'the shape and design of a small bow tie presents a pleasing appearance at the upper end of the bow tie holder while substantially U-shaped por- 'tion"4t; in addition to providing means for securing adjacent holders together also defines an aperture 5% by which the bow tie holder may be secured to a nail, hook or other fastening means inserted in a suitable horizontal support such as a 'wall' or display case.
FIGURES 7 to 9 show a bow tie holder 60 constructed in accordance with the present invention provided at its lower end 62 with two pairsof holes, one pair being indicated at 64 in FIGURE 7. Holes 64 are in vertical alignment along one edge 66 of the holder 60. It will be 'understood'that a similar pair of holes is formed in the opposite edge of the holderoil in alignment with the two holes 64.
Adapted to be received in both pairs of holes is a clip attachment generallyindicated at 7%) formed .of wire or similar material. By way of example only, the clip 7tlfmay be formed of standard coat hanger wire.
Extendingdownwardly from prongs 76 and 78 are a pair of parallel verticalarms 86 and 82 slightly spaced as indicated at 84, which arms terminate in a flat laterally extending closed loop 86.
Welded or otherwise suitably secured to the rear of closed loop 86 is lower element 72 which terminates at an upper end in a pair of outwardly extending projections 85 and 88 which may be welded or braised as indicated at 90 in FIGURE 9 to the rear of loop 86. Lower element 72 includes a downwardly extending Ll-shaped portion or hook 92 terminating in upwardly projecting lip 94 p V Clip v76 may be attached to the lower end of bow tie holder 60 by simply spreading upright arms 86 and 82 so that the projections 76 and 78 are separated suiiiciently to pass over the edges of the holder. Standard coat hanger-type wire possesses sufiicient resiliency to 'cause the projections to spring into the holes such as 64 provided at the lower end of the holder to securely engage the clip about the lower end of the holder.
While a plurality of clip-on type bow ties may be supported on the ledges 96 of the holder 6!}, similarly a substantial number of four-in-hand ties may be supported from laterally extending closed loop 86. If desired the center portion of the four-in-hand ties may be looped over the forward parallel arm 98 so as to be threaded through the loop and suspended downwardly therefrom. Similarly a plurality of belts may be supported from lower element 72 by slipping the belt k3, buckles over upwardly extending lip '7 and sliding the buckles downwardly to be engaged about the lower porinclude the provision of a plurality of ledges providing for the proper spacing of a series of bow ties along the length of the. holder and in conjunction with the oft-set face 13 providing means for supporting the bow ties in a horizontal position. An additional important feature of the bow tie holder of the present invention includes cooperating means at the upper and lower end of the holder which make it possible to secure a plurality of holders together without detracting from the pleasing overall appearance of the holder and which maintains the continuity of the bow tie display.
An aditional important feature of the present invention is a bow tie holder and clip attachment rendering the device suitable for supporting tour-in-hand ties, belts,
and other similar articles as well as bow ties. By em ploying the novel clip of the present invention in conjunction with the holder a user is able to retain many of his accessories in one place, keeping them neat and onldisplay so that any one he desires to wear may be readily selected with a minimum of bother and efiort.
While the holder of the present invention has been described as being constructed of suitable plastic material, it is apparent that any non-magnetic material having sufficient strength and rigidity may be employed. Similarly,
while illustrated as having a series of reccssedportions between adjacent magnets, it is apparent that the body portion of the holder may be constructed as a solid, elongated bar. Magnets 14 may be constructed of any suitable permanent magnet material and preferably consist of one of the alnico series of permanent magnet materials. Magnetic rods 20 and 22 by way of example only, may be constructed of A; of an inch cold rolled steel. The width of the holder is determined by the particular size of the bow ties to be supported and more specifically by the bow tie clips, while the length of the holder may be varied in accordance with the number of bow ties to be displayed.
