HENRY son'nninnn, or SHARON, MASSACHUSETTS.
GRATE FOR STOVES AND FURNACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,904, dated June 24, 1884.
Application filed February 11, 1884. (No model.)
To ail whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY SOHREINER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sharon, 1 in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grates for Stoves and Furnaces, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to grates; and it has for its object to .provide a grate which may be lowered to allow of the ready removal of ashes, clinkers, 810., .from the bed of fire without disturbing the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a grate which shall be cheap in construction, readily applied, and which shall be thorough and effective in its operation.
The invention consists in-the improved construction and combinations of parts herein. after fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is afront elevation of a stove having my improvements applied thereto, the door being opened to show the means for retaining the grate in position. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several figures, A represents a stove, which may be of any preferred or suitable construction.
B represents my improved grate, which is pivoted upon the inner rear side of the said stove by means of loops or eyes a, which pass through perforations b in the said grate. It will be seen, however, that this mode of pivoting is not essential, as the grate may be mounted upon pivots. The front end portion of the grate" B is provided with a' finger-piece or extension, 0, which is adapted to be engaged by a pivoted hook or catch, D, which is secured to the side of the stove at a point The end of this finger-piece or extension projects out-, wardly, and when the door to the stove is closed rests in a slot formed therein, which looks the grate in a raised position.
Upon the inner rear side of the stove and at a point slightly below the grate is provided a rod or bar, E, the ends of which are seated in the sides of the stove. Upon this bar or rod E are secured one end of each of two coil-springs, F, the other or free ends of which extend outwardly and engage or bear against the gratebars, near their front ends, and which are curved or bent near said front ends to form a seat for the grate-bars,-and thus prevent disengagement, and forming a guide for said ends of the springs when the grate is depressed or lowered to remove ashes, clinkers, etc.
The operation is as follows: WVhen it is desired to remove ashes, 820., from the fire, the catch D iswithdrawn from engagement with the finger-piece or extension, and the grate lowered by means of the same. The springs upon the under side of the grate are depressed,
and slide on the grate-bars. The ashes and clinker-s may then be removed from the fire without disturbing the same in the least.
It will also be seen that my improvements are applicable to furnaces, ranges, and cookstoves, as well as the ordinary heating-stove; hence I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to their application, nor to any particular kind of springs.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a stove or fur nace, of a grate pivoted at one endto the inner side of said stove or furnace, and springs located beneath said grate for retaining the same in position, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a stove or furnace, of apivoted grate and springs for retaining the same in position, said springs being mounted upon a bar secured in the sides of the stove at one end, and the other or free ends being adapted to engage or bear against the under side of the grate, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a stove or furnace, of apivoted grate, a bar secured in the sides of the stove or furnace directly below the said grate, and coil-springs secured upon said bar at one end and having their free ends bent upwardly to engage the grate-bars, substantially as set forth. p
4c. The combination, with a stove or furnace, of a pivoted grate having a fingerpiece or extension at its forward end, a hook In testimony that I claim the foregoing as or catch pivoted to the side of the said stove my own I have hereto affixed my signature in or furnace to engage the same, a bar secured presence of two witnesses. in the sides of the stove or furnace, and coi1-' HENRY SOHREINER.
springs secured upon said bar, the free ends Vitnesses:
of which are adapted to engage the under l r M. W. DUNBAR, side of the grate, substantially as set forth.
WVALTER AMES.
