Moorhonse, Clear Lake, Minn. Filed Nov. 5, 1959, Ser. No. 851,035 4 Claims. (Cl. 223-91) This invention relates to an attachment for use in connection with an ordinary type of clothes hanger, such as a wire clothes hanger, to provide support for a garment hung thereon and to prevent such a garment from slipping on said hanger. Such a clothes hanger is cornmonly used by clothes cleaning and pressing establishments.
It is common practice to place a paper guard over the cross bar or hanging bar of a clothes hanger, such as of a wire clothes hanger, to provide more adequate snpport for a garment hung thereon, such as a pair of trousers, and to prevent creasing of such a garment. Such a paper guard provides more adequate support than does the bare clothes hanging bar of the hanger but such a support does not prevent slippage of the garment off of the bar. Such a support, moreover, is completely covered by the garment hung thereover preventing any indicia on said support from being visible and having advertising value while the hanger is in use.
Itis desirable to have some means in addition to such a supporting member as a paper guard whereby a garment such as a pair of trousers may be hung on a hanger without it being creased and Without having the tendency to slip off of the hanger.
It is an object therefore of this invention to provide an attachment to be used in connection with a clothes hanger, such as a wire clothes hanger, to provide support for a garment being hung over the cross bar of said hanger and to provide means to prevent slippage of said garment, and further to have a portion of said invention visible in operating position to have indicia such as advertising material present thereon.
It is another object of this invention to provide an attachment to be used in connection with a clothes hanger comprising a member of relatively rigid sheet material having a portion adapted to overlie the cross bar of said clothes hanger to provide adequate support for a garment to prevent creasing of said garment and a clamping bar extending substantially the full length of said hanger adapted to overlie the outer side of said garment to hold said garment in position to prevent its slippage.
It is a further object of this invention to provide an attachment for use in connection with a clothes hanger comprising an elongated substantially rectangular sheet of suitably rigid material adapted to have a portion thereof reversely curved to overlie the cross bar of said hanger and having a portion thereof depending from said cross bar and having a ap portion cut from said depending portion having one end connected thereto and having its other end adapted to provide locking engagement with the adjacent portion of said depending portion whereby said ap portion may be placed to overlie a garment hung over the cross bar of said hanger with the free end of said clamping portion being releasingly secured to the depending portion adjacent thereto.
It is still a further object of this invention to provide an attachment for use in connection with a clothes hanger comprising a portion adapted to be slidingly secured to the cross bar of said hanger adjacent one end thereof, said portion having an elongated strip of narrow width forming a clamping member pivoted at one end thereto and a second portion of said attachment on said cross bar spaced from said first portion having means in connection therewith for releasingly engaging the free end of said clamping member at certain different points thereon whereby a garment may be hung over said cross bar between said portions and said portions may be adjusted to be adjacent either side of said garment and said clamping portion is adapted to overlie an outer side of said garment with the free end thereof adapted to be releasingly secured at certain different points thereon to said second portion.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and in which:

FIG. 16 is a view in horizontal section taken on line 16-16 of FIG. 15 as indicated by the arrows;
FIG. 17 is a view in front elevation of a portion of applicants device; and
FIG. 18 is `a view in vertical section taken on line 18-18 of FIG. 15 as indicated by the arrows.
Referring to the drawings land particularly to FIGS. 1, 2, and 8, a clothes hanger 10 is shown. Said clothes hanger having a cross bar 12 is an ordinary type of wire hanger such as is commonly used by dry cleaning and pressing establishments. In connection with said hanger 10 there is shown `a blank 13- which may be formed of any suitable sheet material and it has been found that substantial rigid paper sheet material is suitable. Said blank 13 will have its upper portion 14 reversely curved as along the dotted line 15 with said curved portion being disposed over the cross bar 12 to provide a suitable supporting surface for a garment such as garment 16 and has a sufciently rounded upper surface so that said garment 16 will not become creased thereon. Said reversely curved portion may be fastened as by staples 17. Said blank 13 will have a depending portion 13 at one side of said hanger as shown in FIG. 1. Die cut from said depending portion 18 along the line 20 is a strip clamping member 21. Said clamping member 21 will be integral with said depending portion 18 at one end thereof to have a hinged effect therewith and will have a fastening means here shown in the form of a hook 22 at its free end adapted for locking engagement `with the hook portion 23 formed in the adjacent portion of said depending portion 18. Said blank 13` will be formed of a sufficiently bendable material so that `member 21 may be bent outwardly to an open position to permit garment 16 to be draped over the cross bar 12. Said clamping strip 21 is then returned to closed position to overlie the garment and its free end will be 4lockingly engaged with the hook portion 23. The garment will then be frictionally engaged by the clamping portion 21 in connection with the depending portion 18 along the line 20. There is suiiicient hold here to prevent the garment from slipping.
Indicia such as `advertising indicia 24 is preferably placed on said clamping strip 21. Said clamping strip is well adapted for advertising purposes as it is exposed and clearly visible at such times as a garment is draped over the cross bar of a hanger and thus contributes utility to applicants invention which may inure to the benefit of whomever may provide the attachment such as a cleaning service.
With reference to FIGS. 3, 4, and 9, a modification of applicants device is shown in which a blank 25 is provided having an upper portion 26 thereof adapted to be reversely curved along the line 27 to form a portion to be disposed over the cross bar 28 of which only a fragmentary view is shown and this will be of a common and ordinary type of Wire hanger 29, such as hanger 10. Said reversely curved portion may be secured to the body portion of the blank 25, las by staples 30. Said blank 25 will berdie cut along lines 32 and 33- to remove a triangular portion and form an elongated clamping strip 36 having a tongue 3-7 of reduced width extending outwardly at its free end with a small hook portion being formed at the freel end of said tongue. Cut into the body of said blank 25 adjacent the end of the strip 36 are parallel slits 3-9 through which the tongue 37 may be disposed, as indicated in FIGS. 3 and 9, to form a holding means. When the clamping strip 36 is raised to have its tongue portion 37 disposed through the slits 39, the hinged portion 4t) of the strip 36 will buckle slightly as indicated in FIG. 3. As is seen, said clamping strip 36 is here shown die cut on a slant to provide suflioient length to have said tongue portion disposable through said slits 39.
With reference to FIGS. and 6, another modification of applicants device is shown in which a blank 45 is provided similar to the blanks shown in FIGS. 8-9 having an upper reversely curved portion 46 disposed over the cross bar 47 of a hanger 48 and being secured as by staples 49. A portion 50 of said blank 45 will depend somewhat below the cross bar 47. Adapted to overlie a lower longitudinal portion of said depending portion 50 is a clamping strip 52 secured to said depending portion 50 at one end thereof, as by rivets 53, and having at its free end an aperture 55. Adapted to be in alignment with said aperture 55 and secured to said depending portion 50 is a button-like member 57 having an enlarged head portion 58 to be disposed through said aperture 55 for removably securing the free end of said clamping strip 52.
With reference to FIGS. 7, l0, 13 and 14, a clothes hanger 60 is indicated of the type similar to clothes hanger having a cross bar 61. Adapted to be disposed over said cross bar 61 adjacent one end thereof is a substantially cylindrical member 62. formed of a resilient material, such 'as of plastic, having a bore 63 therethrough of small transverse dimension and having a radial slit 64 extending from said bore to the periphery of said member 62. As indicated in FIG. 13, one side of said member 62 will be somewhat flattened and extending outwardly therefrom the length of said bar 61 is a clamping strip 65 having a plurality of apertures 66 longitudinally spaced along the free end portion thereof.
Adapted to be mounted on said cross bar 61 adjacent its other end is a cylindrical member 68 of substantially short length having -a bore 69 therethrough of small transverse dimension and having a radial slit 7 0 extending from said bore to the periphery thereof. Said bores 63 and 69 Will be of such a size that when said members 62 and 68 are mounted on said cross bar 61 they will frictionally engage said cross bar. Said member 68 is prol vided with a substantially flat side 72. having extending outwardly therefrom a button-like member 74 having an enlarged head portion and a neck portion of reduced dimension adapted to be disposed through any certain one of said apertures 66 to grippingly engage the free end of said clamping strip 65 to hold the same in a locked position.
In use, said members 62 and 68 will be mounted on said cross bar 61 and it is seen that they are capable of sliding adjustment thereon to be positioned certain different distances apart. They may be adjusted so as to abut either side of a garment '76 hung over said cross bar 61 and said clamping strip 65 is then positioned over an outer side of said garment and secured to said fastening member 74 for clamping said garment 76 in position against the cross bar 61 to prevent it from slipping off of said cross bar.
Referring to FIGS. 15-18, another modication of applicants device is shown in connection with a clothes hanger 75 having a cross bar portion 75a. A blank 85 is provided similar to said blank 13 having a reversely curved portion 77 disposed over the cross bar 75a and secured in position by fastening means 79 Shown here in the form of staples. Although this specific structure is here indicated, there is embodied within the applicants invention the concept of having said blank 85 disposed over cross bar 75a to have equal portions at either side thereof and having identical construction at either side thereof.
Said blank 85 has a depending portion 78 extending substantially the full length of the hanger 75, and adapted to overlie said depending portion is a clamping strip 81 secured at one end thereof as by a staple 80 to adjacent one end portion of said depending portion 78, and having adjacent its other end extending upwardly from its lower edge portion a plurality of open-ended slots 82. At the other end portion of said depending portion 78 is a plurality of slits 84 through one of which may be conveniently disposed the free end portion of said clamping strip 81 with one of said slots 82 being disposed in said slit to releasingly hold in operating position the free end portion of said strip 8:1.
Thus in operation a garment 83 will be hung on hanger 75 folded over the cross bar 75a and overlying applicants blank whereby said clamping strip 81 will be disposed about the outer side of said garment with the free end of said strip 81 being disposed through one of the slits 84 depending on the width of the garment 83 to releasingly hold said garment securely on said hanger. The bulk of the garment will determine which of the slots will engage said slit.
