(Cl. 144-72) The present invention relates to timber perforating machines, and more particularly, such machines that can make rectangular holes in timber mechanically, and has for its object to obtain a timber perforating machine comprising a pair of vertical supports located in space, each of which has a receiving opening for setting a timber, each upper portion of said supports being in a telescopic arrangement under influence of a restoring spring, a movable main body secured to both said upper portions, carrying an endless cutting chain, which consists of chisel links and saw links arranged alternately and is located between said supports, engaging with a driving chain wheel and guide chain wheels, and an operating handle for moving the main body together with the cutting chain towards the timber against the restoring springs.
Hitherto the production of rectangular holes in timber has been chiefly carried out in manual manners, namely by using chisels, and consequently, it has been very ineflicient. According to my invention rectangular holes can be easily and productively made in timber by only pressing the operating handle downwards, and moreover, those of various sizes can be made by adjusting the shape of the endless cutting chain.
The specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the following description.

FIG. 5 is a sectioned elevational view of an endless cutting chain part of the machine, one half being shown;

FIG. 7 is a sectional plan view of said part taken along the line CC in FIG. 5;
FIG. 8 is a plan view of a chisel link;
FIG. 9 is a sectioned elevational view of said chisel link taken along the line D--D in FIG. 8;

Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the views.
Referring to FIGS. 1-4, 1 denotes a machine frame having a pair of vertical supports 2 located in a suitable space, each middle portion of which is formed to be a rectangular side opening 3 for receiving a timber and is provided with a screw 4 for setting said timber. Firmly inserted in each vertical cylindrical portion 5 of the supports 2 is a hollow supporting tube 6 engaging with a supporting rod 7 telescopically under influence of a restoring spring 8. Each top end of said supporting rods is secured to each horizontal arm 9 of a main body 10 which is thus movable in a vertical direction.
The main body 10 has a vertical slot 11 at its upper portion, through which slot a horizontal driving shaft 12 is adjustably secured to said main body. Rigidly fixed to the front end and the rear end of said driving shaft are a driving chain wheel 13 and a driving pulley 14, respectively.
Provided with the lower portion of the main body 10 are a pair of horizontal bars 15, each of them having 'a Patented May 7, 1963 horizontal slot 16, through which said bars are adjustably secured to the main body with a fixing bolt 17. To each outer end of the bars 15- is a side guide chain wheel 18 is secured, and moreover, to the bottom end of the main body 10 a bottom .guide chain wheel 19 is secured. An endless cutting chain 20 of quadrilateral shape is en gaged with the chain wheels 13-, 18 and 19, as more clearly shown in FIGS. 5 to 7.
The endless cutting chain 20 consists of chisel links 21 and saw links 22, each of said chisel links and each pair of said saw links being arranged alternately and con nected by a pin 23. The chisel link 21 is of U shape and has a chisel blade 24 on its top end as shown in FIGS. 8 and 9. The saw link 22 is a plate and has saw teeth 25 on its top end as shown in FIGS. 10 and 11.
26 shows an operating lever handle pivoted on the top end of the frame 1, the central portion of which handle is pivotally secured to the top portion of the main body 10.
The timber perforating machine according to my invention is thus constructed, and its operation is as follows:
A timber 27, in which a rectangular hole is required, is inserted in the receiving openings 3 and is rigidly set by the screws 4, and the driving pulley 14 is rotated by a motor or any other driving source, then the driving chain wheel 13, which is firmly united with the driving shaft 12 together with said driving pulley, is rotated, thereby driving the endless cutting chain 20. Now the lever handle 26 is pressed downwards, then the main body 10 connected to said handle goes down together with the cutting chain 20, compressing the restoring springs 8 and pushing the supporting rods 7 into the supporting tubes 6 by the arms 9 of said main body.
When the bottom portion of the cutting chain 20 reaches the timber 27, the chisel links 21 and the saw links 22 successively and respectively chisel and saw the timber, thereby perforating it and making a rectangular hole in it.
When the operating handle .26 is released, the main body 10 as well as the cutting chain 20 restore automatically to their original positions under influence of the springs 8.
If the driving chain wheel 13 is moved in an upper position by changing the location of the driving shaft 12 along the vertical slot 11 and at the same time each of the side chain wheels 18 together with each of the bars 15 is moved in an inner position through the horizontal slot (16, the quadrilateral cutting chain 20 will become slender, whereby a shorter rectangular hole can be obtained.
Without further description it is thought that the features and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, and it will of course be understood that changes in form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the app-ended claims.
What I claim is:
1. Apparatus for perforating a rectangular hole in wood or the like, comprising a frame having means for clamping a workpiece to be perforated therein, chain mounting means mounted on said frame for reciprocal vertical movement thereon toward and away from the position in which the workpiece is clamped in the frame, an endless cutting chain mounted on said chain mounting means and having saw and chisel means alternating along the length of said chain, the path of said chain on said chain mounting means having an apex at the lowermost point thereof, said chain mounting means being adjustable for changing the horizontal dimension of said chain path and altering the angle of the apex of the chain at the lowermost point of the path of the chain, and means on said chain mounting means adapted to be connected to driving means for driving said chain, whereby the portion of the chain running past the apex of the path of the chain will contact the workpiece in which the hole is to be formed finst and the size of the cut will be gradually elongated as the chain mounting means is moved,
downwardly toward the workpiece.
2; Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 in which said chain mounting means comprises a plurality of atleast four chain Wheels thereon, said chain wheels being arranged in a pattern with afirst wheel at a lowermost point and two further wheels on the same level and abovethe lowermost wheel, whereby the chain running over said first wheel and said' two further wheelsruns in a path forming the apex.
3. Apparatus as claimed in claim 2 in which said chain mounting means further comprises a mounting frame and said two further wheels are adjustably mounted for adjustment laterally of said frame, and at least one of the wheels of the remaining wheels of the plurality of wheels other than said first wheel and said two remaining wheels is adjustable toward and away from said two wheels.

Claims (1)
1. APPARATUS FOR PERFORATING A RECTANGULAR HOLE IN WOOD OR THE LIKE, COMPRISING A FRAME HAVING MEANS FOR CLAMPING A WORKPIECE TO BE PERFORATED THEREIN, CHAIN MOUNTING MEANS MOUNTED ON SAID FRAME FOR RECIPROCAL VERTICAL MOVEMENT THEREON TOWARD AND AWAY FROM THE POSITION IN WHICH THE WORKPIECE IS CLAMPED IN THE FRAME, AN ENDLESS CUTTING CHAIN MOUNTED ON SAID CHAIN MOUNTING MEANS AND HAVING SAW AND CHISEL MEANS ALTERNATING ALONG THE LENGTH OF SAID CHAIN, THE PATH OF SAID CHAIN ON SAID CHAIN MOUNTING MEANS HAVING AN APEX AT THE LOWERMOST POINT THEREOF, SAID CHAIN MOUNTING MEANS BEING ADJUSTABLE FOR CHANGING THE HORIZONTAL DIMENSION OF SAID CHAIN PATH AND ALTERING THE ANGLE OF THE APEX OF THE CHAIN AT THE LOWERMOST POINT OF THE PATH OF THE CHAIN, AND MEANS ON SAID CHAIN MOUNTING MEANS ADAPTED TO BE CONNECTED TO DRIVING MEANS FOR DRIVING SAID CHAIN, WHEREBY THE PORTION OF THE CHAIN RUNNING PAST THE APEX OF THE PATH OF THE CHAIN WILL CONTACT THE WORKPIECE IN WHICH THE HOLE IS TO BE FORMED AND THE SIZE OF THE CUT WILL BE GRADUALLY ELONGATED AS THE CHAIN MOUNTING MEANS IS MOVED DOWNWARDLY TOWARD THE WORKPIECE.
