Description
Feb. 19, 1963 o. A. BEECK ROLLER MOUNTED EXTENSION SLIDE Filed July 15, 1960 0770 A. BEEC/l ATroe/vEY.
United States Patent Ofiice 3,078,130 Patented Feb. 19, 1963 3,078,130 ROLLER MOUNTED EXTENSION SLIDE Gtto A. Beeclr, 158 Jericho Turnpike, Floral Park, N.Y. Filed July 15, 1960, Ser. No. 43,115 3 Claims. (Cl. 308-33) This invention relates to extension slides and more particularly, to a slide for an extension table.
The conventional slide for an extension table consists of a series of rather elongate, juxtapositioned wooden slide beams which are afiixed to one another for longitudinal movement. The aflixation conventionally consists of a wooden connector positioned between adjacent slide beams, said connector being mounted in a longitudinal groove formed in one slide beam and is adapted to ride in a longitudinal groove formed in the other slide member.
This wood against wood arrangement leaves much to be desired from the viewpointof wear and operability. Such a slide is effected by temperature and humidity, Wears very poorly and is subject to jamming and other mechanical failure. At best, a table incorporating such a slide is not easy to open and close.
It is therefore amongst the primary objects of the present invention to provide a smooth operating, long wearing extension slide of relatively simple construction and from readily available materials.
It is another important object of the present invention to provide a slide for an extension table whereby the table may be opened and closed with ease and which will not be subject to jamming and other mechanical failure.
It is yet a further object of the present invention to provide an extension table slide which is perfectly balanced and smooth operating and yet retains the traditional Wooden feel which is sought after in custom wooden tables.
How these and other objects are accomplished and new results are obtained, will be apparent from what is described in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a table slide in accordance with the present invention, the slide being in opened position;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the slide of FIG. 1 in closed position;
FIG. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the slide of the foregoing figures;
FIG. 4 is another longitudinal sectional view of the slide of the foregoing figures;
FIG. 5 is essentially an end view of said slide;
FIG. 6 is a broken away sectional view taken on line 6-6 of FIG. 4 showing in some detail the construction of rollers in accordance with the present invention; and
FIG. 7 is a broken away view of a metal track utilized in the slide.
Referring now to the drawing, a table slide in accordance with the present invention is shown in FIG. 1 consisting of lateral beams 10 and 12 slidably mounted on either side of central beam 14 for movement longitudinally thereof. In this particular embodiment of the invention, beams 10, 12 and 14 are of wood, as is conventional with table slides, being adapted for use with a table that has two permanent top sections. Slide members 10 and '12 are attached to said permanent sections, the bores 16 being provided for this purpose. The extension table herein contemplated has one or more supplemental top sections which are adapted to be laid between its permanent sections when the slide is partly or fully extended. The extension table has been omitted from the drawing so as not to unduly encumber the same.
It should be realized that although the extension slide herein disclosed is best illustrated with respect to extension tables, the invention is not so limited being applicable to situations wherein two adjacent members are slidably interconnected. Additionally, the invention is not limited merely to the three beam slide shown, the number of beams being chosen with respect to contemplated use.
Aluminum tracks 18 recessed in opposing faces of the slide beams cooperate with nylon rollers carried by the slide beams to achieve the desired sliding motion. Each roller assemblage includes a primary roller 20 which runs within a track and a secondary roller 22 which, as may be seen in FIG. 5, is adapted to ride on flanges 24 of opposing tracks. This balanced construction insures extremely smooth and easy operation and is most wear resistant.
As may be best seen in FIG. 6, the roller assemblage is mounted on a round headed screw 28 which extends through wooden insert 26 and metallic track 18 to be anchored in the body of the slide member. The positioning of the rollers is such that the primary roller 20 always rides within the track while the secondary roller 22 is adapted to bear upon the track flanges, as previously described. The rollers are appropriately spaced by relatively small diameter washers 30.
The extension of screw head 32 outwardly of the roller assembly, as shown, rather than being flush with its respective roller as would be the case with a flat headed screw, is preferred if optimum balance and durability are to be achieved. Accordingly, track 18 is recessed at 34 to accommodate extension 32. Additionally, track 18 is provided with a convexed bearing surface 36 which, amongst other things, permits of easy dirt removal and lessens dirt accumulation when compared with the dirt accumulation of a track with a perfectly flat bearing surface. Suitably positioned screws 38 fasten the tracks to their respective slide members, as may be seen in FIG. 3.
Although the invention has been described, it should be understood that it is not confined to the particular form or use herein shown, the same being merely illustrative, and that the invention may be carried out in other ways with out departing from the spirit thereof, and therefore, the right is broadly claimed to employ all equivalent instrumentalities coming within the scope of the appended claims and by means of which the objects of the invention are attained and new results are accomplished, as it should be obvious that the particular embodiment herein shown and described is only one of the many that can be employed to attain these objects and accomplish these results.
What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. An extension slide comprising at least two juxtapositioned wooden slide members having aligned channels formed in opposing faces of said slide members; a metallic track having a configuration conforming to said channel being positioned within each said channel; a roller assembly carried by each said slide member, said roller assemblies being positioned at opposite ends of the slide when said slide is closed, each said roller assembly being mounted in fixed position on the slide member carrying the same end comprising a rotatable primary roller and a juxtapositioned, one piece, independently rotatable, secondary roller of smaller diameter than said primary roller; the primary roller carried by one slide member riding within said metallic track carried by said other slide member, each said metallic track having a pair of 0pposed flanges for retaining said primary roller within said metallic track, and said secondary roller positioned to ride upon the flanges of a pair of said metallic tracks carried by two juxtapositioned slide members, thereby slidably interconnecting said slide members; inserts substantially conforming to the configuration of said metallic track mounted within said tracks and at the ends thereof, said inserts limiting the retraction of the slide and said primary rollers limiting the extension of said slide; each of said roller assemblies being mounted on one of said inserts.
2. An extension slide as defined in claim 1, wherein said primary rollers ride upon a convexed bearing surface of each said metallic track.
3. An extension slide as defined in claim 1, wherein said primary and secondary rollers are rotatably mounted on a support member, said support member being afiixed at one end thereof to said slide member and provided with an enlarged head at the other end thereof for securely retaining said rollers in position; said enlarged, retaining head extending outwardly of said rollers, and said metallic track being recessed to accommodate said enlarged, retaining head, said underlying channel in said wooden slide member being similarly recessed.
