Be it known that I, ALBERT `GALLATTN SAFFORD, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented anew and useful Improvement in VVindow-Sash Supporters or Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following speciiication and represented in the. accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a front view, and Fig. 2 a vertical section, of portions of a window frame and sash provided with my invention, the nature of which is defined in the claims hereinafter presented. Fig. 3 is a front view, and Fig. an edge view, of the friction-catch or sash-supporter to be described. Fig. 5 is an inner side view of part of the window-frame grooved bar as notched to receive the catch or saslrsupporter. Fig. 6 is a front view, Fig. 7 an edge view, and Fig. S a vertical section, of a portion of thesash-bar, showing its sockets and recesses for receiving the friction-catch or sashsupporter. Figs. 9 and 10 are hereinafter described.
rlhe said sash-supporter (shown at A) consists not only of an arm or stift' piece of wire, a, having two right-angular bends in itin the Same direction, as represented at b and c, but of a spiral spring', s, having one of the parts, d and @,of the wire extended into and through it, the spring at its outer end being inserted into a hole made transversely in the part d. At its other end the spring has its wire extended outwardly from it in manner as shown at f. The vertical bar B of the sash has a socket, y, bored horizontally in it from its outer edge, and of a length somewhat more than sufficient to receive the spring s. There is alsol in the bar from its outer edge, and extending down from the socket g, a socket, h,V to receive the extension]C of the spring. Furthermore,there extends upward from the socket g, and in the outer edge of the sash-bar, a groove or recess, i, and there projects from the head or upper part of such recess transversely across the face of the sash-bar another groove or recess, 7:, such grooves or recesses and Sockets being to receive the friction-catch or such sash-supporter arranged in them, as shown, which, when the sash is in the windowframe, projects into the next adjacent sashreceiving groove, Z, thereof, the part e of the catch being forctd by the spring against one side of the said groove. against which it bears with friction to support the sash when raised in the groove.
In the window-frame, and opening out of the sash-groove at the side thereof against which the catch bears, is a notch or series of notches, m, to receive the upper part, e, of the catch, and with such to operate to lock the sash in position, whether it be wholly down or raised in the window-frame. By pressing its groove of the sash-bar, the friction-catch may be thrown out of engagement with the notch, in order to allow of the sash being moved within the window-frame. To aid in effecting such a movement of the sash-sup porter, it may have a knob extended from its part e, or, what is better, such may be accomplished by a bent rockerlever, E, pivoted to the sash-bar, or connected thereto by serewsp going through it into the bar loosely, a perspective view of such lever being given in Fig. 9, and a top view of it as applied to the sash and catch in Fig. 10. The said lever has one arm lapping on the part e of the supporter. By properly pressing on the upper arm the lever may be rocked so as to cause the catch of the supporter to be moved out of contact with the side of the groove of the 'windowframe.
Vithont the notch or notchesin the windowframe the friction-catch or sash-supporter answers as a means of holding or sustaining the sash by friction when such sash may be raised in the grooves of the window-frame. My said Sash-supporter is specially useful for the windows of railwaycars, though applicable to other windows having asash or sashes to slide in grooves.
I do notclaim a rigid catch consisting of a piece of Wire bent five times,in the manner as represented in the United States Patent No. 129,149, and arranged in a recess made in a window-frame and held therein by staples, and provided with a spring adapted to itslower part and bearing` against the bottom of the recess, the piece of wire of my sash fastener or supporter being bent at a right angle but twice in the same direction, and its spring against the part c so as to force it back into s ICO encompassing the lo'wer straight part, d, so as with it to be inserted in a cavity, g, bored in the sash, such cavity being at aright angle to the recess i, for receiving the stein or median part ofthe wire.
It will be perceived that my sash fastener' or supporter is applied directly to and moves with the sash, and its part e bears against one side of the groove in which the sash runs,- such side having in it one or more notches to receive the part e, in order to lock the sash in the window-frame.
My sash fastener or supporter, made in the form and applied as described to the sash, so as to be movable therewith, requires no staples to keep it in place in the sash, and may be operated without the rocker-lever adapted to the sash, as in the arrangement of the sas11- supporter in sash the part e projects from the window-frame and the sash in a manner to enable the finger ot' a person to be directly applied to such part e for moving the sash-supporter. The rocker-lever separate from the sash-supporter and pivoted to the sash is an auxiliary of manifest advantage.
