Referring in detail to the drawings, in FIG. 1 a utility knife made in accordance with the invention is shown and 2 designated generally by the reference numeral 10. The knife is formed of two separable complementary sections 20 and 22 which when superimposed one upon the other define the complete knife 10. Each section has a rectangular-shaped, fiat, plate-like body portion and an elongated shallow shell-like handle portion, arcuate shaped in cross section and rectangular-shaped in plan.
The body portion of section 20 is designated 27 and the handle portion 24. A shallow rectangular-shaped recess 28 is formed in the inner surface of the body portion at the center thereof. The outer free end of the body portion is cut away to provide a clearance 30. A latch 25 is formed integrally with the outer free end of the handle portion 24. Latch 25 extends outwardly in the direction of the end of the handle portion and then extends slightly radially of the handle portion forming a prolongation of the handle portion and serving as a finger piece. The peripheral edge 26 of .the handle portion 24 is fiat. A lug 38 is formed integrally with the body portion 27 at its junction with the handle portion 24. The lug extends outwardly of the plane of the edge 26 of the handle portion 24 and serves as a guide to center the sections in assembling. The flat peripheral edge 26 of the handle portion- 24 is on a plane with the body portion 27.
In section 22, the body portion is designated 39 and the handle portion 24.
At the outer free. end of the handle portion, a notch 31 is formed to receive the latch 25, the edge wall of the-notch coacting'with the clip to interlock the sections. .A shalhole 48 is formed between the openings in line therewith. A shallow flange 50. is formed on the outer free end of the body portion and ends remote from the sides of the body portion so as to be received in the clearance 30in.

. in accordance with the invention, a rectangular-shaped spring metal plate 42 is fastened to the bottom or outer surface of the body portion 39 of section 22 by means of a rivet 45 extending through a central opening 46 in the plate and the hole 33 in the body portion. 139. A pairof aligned short lugs 44 is suitablysecure'd to the plate 4 2 on. one surface thereof adjacent its ends. The lugs are preferably tapered along one side as indicated at 43, and extend through the aligned openings 43 in the body portion 39 and extend slightly inwardly of the plane of the body portion so as to provide short protuberances. The inherent flexibility of the material of the plate 42 is such that it can be bent to swing the lugs 44 through the openings 43 outwardly to the plane of the body portion to eliminate any protuberant portion of the lugs when desired.
The knife can be used with safety razor blades of ordinary construction having dou'ole edges, or can be used with safety razor blades of ordinary construction having only a single cutting edge. In the knife shown in FIG. 1, a thin double edge blade 6% of the Gillette type having a continuous cutout portion 62 along the center thereof extending approximately the length of the blade is shown clamped between the body portions 27 and 39. In assembling the knife, the blade is placed on the upper surface of body portion 39 with the protruding lugs 44 received in and extending through the cut-out portion 62 of the blade. The section 24B of the knife is then superimposed on section 22, the lug 38 riding in recess 54- and tending to center the sections. Pressure on the free end of section 243 against the free end of section 22 snaps the The flat peripheral edge 26 of the. handle portion is on a plane with the body portion.39.
3 latch 25 into interlocking engagement with the edge walls of the notch 31 thereby clamping the body portion 27 against the blade 60 and against the body portion 39 thus securely holding the blade in cutting position with its cutting edges on both sides of. the body portions as seen in FIG. 1. The sections of the knife can readily be pried apart when it is desired to renew the blade. The elongated handle portion of the knife affords the necessary leverage for efiective use of the knife.
The knife 14 can also be used with a safety razor blade of ordinary construction of the single cutting edge, such as the blade 49 shown in FIGS. 9 and 10. The blade 49 has a thin fiat body rectangular in shape with a cutting edge 51 along one long edge and a reinforcing strip or clip 53 along the other long edge on both sides thereof. In assembling the knife with this t3 pe of blade, the blade is placed flatwise on the top surface of the body portion 39 of section 22 with its reinforcing strip portion 53 over the lugs 44 and in line with the central recess 40, with the body of the blade overhanging one long edge of the body portion 39 and with the cutting edge 51 projecting outwardly of said body portion. Section 2t) is then superimposed on section 2.2 with the body portion 27 of section 20 engaging the blade 49 whereupon inward pressure is exerted upon the section 20 so that the blade forces the lugs 44 through the openings 43 in the body portion permitting the blade to become seated upon the inner surface of body portion 39 and clamped thereagainst. At the same time, the clip 25 snaps over the edge walls of notch 31 holding the sections together and the blade in.
cutting position.
The invention also contemplates a sectional knife wherein the sections of the knife, at the ends of the body portions, are hingedly connected together in order to offer somewhat greater convenience to the user in opening and closing the knife. A fragment of such a modified form of, knife 16 is shown in FIGS. ll to 13, inclusive. In this form, the body portion 27 of section 20' is formed at its free end with a tubular hinge knuckle 70. The free end of the body portion 39 of the other section 22 is formed with a pair of spaced tubular hinge knuckles 72 adapted to receive the knuckle 70 in the space therebetween and in alignment therewith. A hinge pin 74 is journalled in the aligned knuckles for hingedly connecting the sections together.
The knife is similar in all other respects to the knife 10 and similar reference numerals are used to indicate similar parts.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
A sectional cutting knife comprising a pair of complementary sectional members, each member including a shallow shell-like handle portion rectangular in plan, and a flat rectangular plate-like body portion, said handle portions superimposed in abutting relation defining a hollow handle, said body portions superimposed in closely spaced relation, one of said body portions having spaced aligned openings therealong, a spring plate secured to the outside surface of the perforated body portion, lugs carried by the spring plate and extending through the.
openings in said body portion to the space between the body portions, and a fiat double edge plate-like cutting blade having spaced openings therein clamped in the space between the body portions with its openings sleeved around the lugs, the cutting edges of the cutting blade extending longitudinally of the superimposed body portions, one of the body portions having a recess therein at the juncture thereof with the handle portion, a projecting lug on the other body portion at the juncture thereof with the handle portion adapted to be received in the recess in the other body portion for guiding the sections to assembled condition, one handle portion having a notch at one end thereof, and a latch on the adjacent end of the other handle portion received in said notchand interlocked with the edge walls thereof, one of said body portions having a cut-away portion in its outer free end edge, the other of said body portions having a flange along its free end edge adapted to be received in the cutaway portion of the other body portion whereby said adjacent ends are interlocked to each other.
