United states Patent Gdfice 3,072,079 Patented Jan. 8, 1963 The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in protective devices and more particularly to a device used in police cars, banks, armored cars and tanks, namely, a gun port.
in places where an attacl: or other uprising might occur, it is important to have an effective shield for those persons who are lawfully involved in the protection of our civil rights. For the persons employed in such dangerous places, several gun ports of the present invention may be provided. The gun ports can be located in the tellers cage, the walls or portitions of a bank, in the sides, front and rear of an armored car, police car, or armored tank. The gun po t assembly of the present invention is preferably made of nonmagnetic, bullet-proof material. The provision of a non-magnetic material eliminates the possibility of any unauthorized person opening said gun port from the outside with a magnet, additionally, it prevents the possibility of any person magnetizing the port opening, thereby causing the gun barrel to be drawn off target when same is inserted through the port.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide an inexpensive, durable gun port which is of simple construction and operation.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a gun port which is not only functional, but aesthetically pleasing and ornamental to the eye when positioned for usage.
Another object of the present invention is a provision of a gun port which can be elfectively secured to a bulletproof wall with a minimum of time and expense.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a gun port with a closure plate which is manually operable from the inside only.
Still another object of the present invention is a provision of a gun port with a spring loaded closure plate, so as to maintain the closure plate in the normally closed position.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a gun port having a bullet-proof closure plate, which cannot be moved or pried open from the outside.
Still another object of this invention is the provision of a gun port having a bullet-proof closure plate of such construction as to render opening of said closure plate impossible by use of a suction cup.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a round gun port with a closure plate actually pivotal in the plane of the axis on which it is mounted.
These and other objects can be accomplished by the provision of a simple gun port, wherein said gun port is mounted in an opening on a generally flat bullet-proof plate; a first round opening in said mounting plate; a flange member having a round opening therein of greater size than said first round opening; said flange opening and said mounting plate opening in generally concentric relationship; a round closure member mounted in saidflange opening; an irregular surface on the outside of said closure member; pivotal means about the vertical center line and below the horizontal axis of said assembly; spring m ans on said pivotal means for maintaining saidclosure plate against said mounting plate; compression of said spring means about said pivotal means to move said closure plate out of said flange opening, thereby allowing said closure plate to pivot and permit usage of said gun port.
Other objects of this invention will appear in the following description and appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification wherein like reference characteris designate corresponding parts in the several views.

Before explaining the present invention in detail, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in its application to the details of construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, since the invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced or carried out in various ways. Also, it is to be understood that the phraseology or terminology employed herein is for the purpose of description and not of limitation.
Referring to the drawings, FIG. 1 illustrates a front elevational view of the present invention. The gun port assembly to is mounted in an opening 11 on a metal, bullet-proof generally flat plate 12. A circular non magnetic flange member 14 is positioned in generally concentric relationship with said opening 11. A plurality of non-magnetic rivets 16 are used to secure the flange 14 to the mounting plate 12. Rivets 16 are spaced about the circumference of the circular flange 14. The two lower rivets 1:; in flange 14 are also made of nonmagnetic material and are of somewhat longer length than the first mentioned rivets 16.
Both rivets 18 extend through the flange 14, plate 12 and then through a pivotal mounting bracket on the inside of the plate. The pivotal mounting bracket 29 is best viewed in FIGS. 2 and 3.
Again returning to FIG. 1 of the drawing, it is advised that the round closure plate 22, is made of non-magnetic, bullet-proof material and has formed on the generally flat outer face 28 thereof, two narrow, diagonally formed recessed portions 24 and 26. These narrow recessed portions 24 and 26 add much to the decorative and ornamental appearance of the gun port, 'While providing a useful and necessary function. Since the outside, generally flat surface 28 of the closure plate 22 has been made irregular, by reason of said recessed portions 24 and 26, it is now rendered impossible to open the gun port of the present invention with a suction cup. Because all of the material in the entire assembly is non-magnetic, it i likewise impossible to open the gun port from the outside with a magnet.
FIG. 2 of the drawiru shows a cross-sectional view of PEG. 1. From this drawing it will be noted that the outside fiange member 14 is formed outwardly at 30 on the inside diameter of opening 32. This construction permits the usage of a stronger and thicker closure plate 22, while not adding to the expense of the flange. A drain hole is centrally positioned above and intermediate rivets 18 so as to allow any water which might collect therein to escape.
The opening 11 in the bullet-proof plate 12 on which the gun port 10 is mounted is of less diameter than the closure plate 22-, while the inside diameter 32 of the flange member 14 is of greater dimension than the closure plate. All of the diameters being in generally concentric relationship.
On the lower pontion of the closure plate 22 is located a pivotal pin or stem member 40. The pivotalstem member 4% extends in generally perpendicular relationship to the rear or back face 42 of the closure member 22. The
pivotal stem 40 is mounted in the rectangular bracket member 29. The bracket member 2t is of an inverted J cross-sectional shape. The bracket member 2%} has two centrally aligned openings 44 and 46 therein in which the pivotal stern member 40 is mounted. The pivotal stern member 4% has an upright or vertically disposed handle member 50 secured to the outer end thereof. Interposed between the inside face 54 of the handle 50 and the rear outer surface 56 of bracket 20 is a compression spring 58. This spring is mounted on the pivotal stem 4%. It is now apparent that upon depression of the handle 50 against compression spring 58 along with rotation of the closure plate 22, 180 degrees will cause the gun port to open to the operative position. The operating, open position is shown in phantom on FIG. 2 of the drawing. The handle member 59 in the open position extends downwardly and forward of the normally closed position to provide a substantially unobstructed opening. Rotation of the handle member 50, 180 degrees from the open position, will move the closure plate 22 into alignment with the flange opening 32 at which time the compression spring acts to close the port and draw the closure plate into rim contacts with the outside of the mounting plate opening 11 in plate 12.
A rear view of the gun port is shown in FIG. 3 of the drawings. Although the present invention may be mounted in many ways, the cross members 60, 62, 64 and 66 shown in this figure are for the purpose of this illustration. The phantom line position is that of the open position shown in FIG. 2.
While FIGS. 1-3 illustrate the preferred form of the present invention, FIG. 4 of the drawings shows a rear view of a modified form of the present invention. The pivotal pin 1-40 in the modified form is located to the right or left of the vertical center line as the case may be. In all instances it will be below the horizontal center line. However, with the pivot point located off of the vertical center line, an eccentric condition exists. Therefore, the handle member 150 along with the closure member will act as eccentric weights to help open the closure member more rapidly upon depression of the handle 156 without necessity of manually rotating the handle member.
From the foregoing description it is to be noted that the invention is simple, inexpensive and easily operated. It is made of non-magnetic material throughout which eliminates tampering by use of a magnet. The outside face of the closure plate is irregular to prevent tampering with a suction cup. The parts are closely fit which eliminates the possibility of tampering or prying with a tool such as a screw driver. The device is functional while being decorative and ornamental and operable at will from one side only, the inside.
Having thus described our invention, we claim:
1. In a gun port assembly, the combination of, a mounting plate having a first opening therein; a disc flange member having a second opening centrally located therein, with said disc flange member rigidly secured to said mounting plate with a plurality of rivets, said second opening in said disc flange member larger than said first opening in said mounting plate With the second opening in said disc flange member being positioned and held in concentric relationship with said first mounting plate opening; a flat closure member of slightly less dimension than said second disc flange member opening positioned within said second opening so as to prevent rotation of said closure member, the space between the edge of said closure and the edge of said second opening making it impossible to insert a jimmy therebetween, the inner plane surface of said closure member in contact with the plane surface of said mounting plate intermediate the axial edge of the first mounting plate opening and the axial edge of said second disc flange member opening, while the outer plane surface thereof terminates in a plane generally parallel to the outer plane surface of the disc flange member; pivotal means secured to said closure, said pivotal means extending axially through the first mounting piate opening and journaled in a bracket member riveted to said mounting plate, said pivotal means positioned on the vertical center line of the closure member below the horizontal axis of said assembly; spring means axially positioned on said pivotal means intermediate said bracket member and a handle on the outer end thereof, said spring means maintaining the inner plane surface of said closure member in engagement with the plane surface of said mounting plate; axial displacement of said pivotal means and compression of said spring means thereon moving said closure member axially out of said second flange member opening, thereby allowing said closure member to rotate about the pivot journaled in the bracket member so as to permit usage of the gun port.
2. In a gun port assembly, the combination of, a generally flat mounting plate having a first round opening therein; a flange member having a second round opening centrally located therein, with said flange member secured to said mounting plate, said second opening in said flange member larger than said first round opening in said mounting plate and both positioned in generally concentric relationship to each other; a round, substantially flat closure member of slightly less dimension than said second round flange member opening movably positioned within said second opening to prevent rotation of said round closure member and the use of a jimmy between the circumferential edges thereof, the inner plane surface of said round closure member in contact with the plane sur face of said mounting plate intermediate the axial edge of the first mounting plate opening and the axial edge of said second flange member opening, while the outer plane surface thereof terminates in a plane generally parallel to the outer plane surface of the flange member; pivotal means secured to said closure, said pivotal means extending axially through the first mounting plate opening and journaled in a bracket member riveted to said mounting plate, said pivotal means secured to the closure member, below the horizontal axis of said assembly; spring means axially positioned on said pivotal means intermediate said bracket member and a handle on the outer end thereof, said spring means maintaining the inner plane surface of said closure member in engagement with the plane surface of said mounting plate; axial displacement of said pivotal means in said bracket and compression of said spring means moving said closure member axially out of said second flange member opening, thereby allowing said round closure member to pivotally rotate in the bracket member so as to gravatate and permit rapid usage of the gun port.
3. A device as in claim 2, wherein a narrow recess extends across the outside face diameter of said round closure member to divide the surface area thereof and prevent effective application of a suction device which would be of sufficient area to permit compression of the spring means and allow rotation of thee losure member from without.
4. A device as in claim 2, wherein a plurality of narrow recesses are provided which extend across the outside face of said closure member, to prevent effective application of a suction device to the outer surface thereof.
5. A device as in claim 2, wherein the flange member and closure member are of non-magnetic material, while the outer face of said closure member has an upwardly extending embossure diagonal thereof.
6. A device as in claim 5, wherein a plurality of embossures extend acros the outer surface of said closure member.
7. In a gun port assembly, the combination of, a generally flat bullet proof mounting plate having a first round opening therein; a disc flange member of non-magnetic material having a second round opening centrally located therein, with said flange member rigidly secured to said mounting plate, said second round opening in said flange member larger than said first round opening in said se /gore bullet proof mounting plate, with both of said openings in generally concentric relationship; a round, non-magnetic, substantially flat closure member of slightly less dimension than said second round flange member opening movably mounted within said second opening to prevent indescriminate rotation of said closure member, the space intermediate the second opening and said closure member of such amount as to prevent insertion of a jimmy therebetween, the inner plane surface of said closure member in contact with the plane surface of said mounting plate intermediate the axial edge of said second flange member opening, while the outer surface thereof which is irregular, terminates in a plane generally parallel to the outer plane surface of the flange member; the inner flat face of the closure member having a pivotal stem Which extends at right angles thereto, through the first mounting plate opening below the horizontal centerline thereof; bracket means on the inside surface of said mounting plate below the horizontal centerline of said first opening; said bracket means having an axial passage therethrough for receiving the pivotal stern on said closure member; a handle member on said pivotal stem; spring means positioned on said pivotal stem intermediate said bracket member and said handle, said spring means maintaining the inner plane surface of said closure member in engagement with the plane surface of the mounting plate; axial displacement of said pivotal stem and compression of said 0 spring by depression of said handle moving said round closure member out of said second opening, thereby per mitting gravitational rotation of said closure member to render said gun port operable, while continued rotation of the handle member will cause the closure member to be repositioned Within said second flange member open ing when said closure member is repositioned in alignment with said second opening.

A device as in claim 7, wherein said pivotal stem is eccentrically positioned adjacent the vertical centerline of the closure member and below the horizontal axis of said assembly; and wherein the outer surface of the closure member has protuberances which extend. above and de pressions which are below the normal plane surface thereof.

Claims (1)

1. IN A GUN PORT ASSEMBLY, THE COMBINATION OF, A MOUNTING PLATE HAVING A FIRST OPENING THEREIN; A DISC FLANGE MEMBER HAVING A SECOND OPENING CENTRALLY LOCATED THEREIN, WITH SAID DISC FLANGE MEMBER RIGIDLY SECURED TO SAID MOUNTING PLATE WITH A PLURALITY OF RIVETS, SAID SECOND OPENING IN SAID DISC FLANGE MEMBER LARGER THAN SAID FIRST OPENING IN SAID MOUNTING PLATE WITH THE SECOND OPENING IN SAID DISC FLANGE MEMBER BEING POSITIONED AND HELD IN CONCENTRIC RELATIONSHIP WITH SAID FIRST MOUNTING PLATE OPENING; A FLAT CLOSURE MEMBER OF SLIGHTLY LESS DIMENSION THAN SAID SECOND DISC FLANGE MEMBER OPENING POSITIONED WITHIN SAID SECOND OPENING SO AS TO PREVENT ROTATION OF SAID CLOSURE MEMBER, THE SPACE BETWEEN THE EDGE OF SAID CLOSURE AND THE EDGE OF SAID SECOND OPENING MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO INSERT A JIMMY THEREBETWEEN, THE INNER PLANE SURFACE OF SAID CLOSURE MEMBER IN CONTACT WITH THE PLANE SURFACE OF SAID MOUNTING PLATE INTERMEDIATE THE AXIAL EDGE OF THE FIRST MOUNTING PLATE OPENING AND THE AXIAL EDGE OF SAID SECOND DISC FLANGE MEMBER OPENING, WHILE THE OUTER PLANE SURFACE THEREOF TERMINATES IN A PLANE GENERALLY PARALLEL TO THE OUTER PLANE SURFACE OF THE DISC FLANGE MEMBER; PIVOTAL MEANS SECURED TO SAID CLOSURE, SAID PIVOTAL MEANS EXTENDING AXIALLY THROUGH THE FIRST MOUNTING PLATE OPENING AND JOURNALED IN A BRACKET MEMBER RIVETED TO SAID MOUNTING PLATE, SAID PIVOTAL MEANS POSITIONED ON THE VERTICAL CENTER LINE OF THE CLOSURE MEMBER BELOW THE HORIZONTAL AXIS OF SAID ASSEMBLY; SPRING MEANS AXIALLY POSITIONED ON SAID PIVOTAL MEANS INTERMEDIATE SAID BRACKET MEMBER AND A HANDLE ON THE OUTER END THEREOF, SAID SPRING MEANS MAINTAINING THE INNER PLANE SURFACE OF SAID CLOSURE MEMBER IN ENGAGEMENT WITH THE PLANE SURFACE OF SAID MOUNTING PLATE; AXIAL DISPLACEMENT OF SAID PIVOTAL MEANS AND COMPRESSION OF SAID SPRING MEANS THEREON MOVING SAID CLOSURE MEMBER AXIALLY OUT OF SAID SECOND FLANGE MEMBER OPENING, THEREBY ALLOWING SAID CLOSURE MEMBER TO ROTATE ABOUT THE PIVOT JOURNALED IN THE BRACKET MEMBER SO AS TO PERMIT USAGE OF THE GUN PORT.
