. 4 Claims. (Cl. 81-165) The present"invention'relates to wrenches of the adjustable jaw type, and more particularly to such a wrench in which the adjustment of the jaws for different sized nuts or bolt heads is effected in a simple manner by turning of the wrench handle.
The general object of the present invention resides in the provision of a wrench of the character described having simple means for translating the turning movement of the handle into a sliding movement of the movable jaw.
Another important object of the present invention resides in the provision of a wrench of the character described in which the parts of the wrench are of such a shape as to facilitate grasping of the wrench body and rotatable handle for tightening the jaws on the nut or bolt head.
Another object of the present invention resides in the provision of a wrench of the character described in which only a few turns of the handle are necessary to close or open the movable jaw and whereby the wrench is very quick of operation and in which the movable jaw yet remains rmly in its intended adjusted position.
Another object of the present invention resides in the provision of a wrench of the character described which is of relatively simple and inexpensive and yet rugged construction.
The foregoing and other important objects of the present invention will become more apparent during the following disclosure and by referring to the drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the wrench of the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is a longitudinal section of the same;
FIGURE 3 is a cross-section along line 3-3 of FIG- URE 2; and
FIGURE 4 is a cross-section along line 4 4 of FIG- URE 2.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings in which like reference characters indicate like elements throughout, the wrench comprises a hollow body 1 of substantially at circular shape provided at one end with a xed jaw 2 integral with body 1 and at the other end with a tubular extension 3 having a shoulder 4. The body 1 has a mortize or transverse bore 5 for slidably receiving a rack member 6 which integrally depends from movable jaw 7 at right angles thereto. Thus, jaw 7 can move towards and away from fixed jaw 2, the two jaws having parallel gripping faces.
A sector shaped element 8 is pivotally mounted at its center of curvature on a pin 9 within cavity 10 dened in body 1, said cavity being closed by a cover 1' overlying sector shape element 8 and bolted to body 1. The element 8 is provided with radial teeth 11 in meshing engagement with the teeth of rack member 6.
The piston member 12 has an axially extending inwardly threaded bore 15 opening at the rear end of said piston member and threadedly receiving a bolt 17 which rigidly supports a hollow handle 18. The cavity 19 of handle 18 spacedly enclosed the bolt 17 and piston member 12, and the outer end of cavity 19 is slidably ro- Sggates Patent., ce

ltatable on tubular extension 3 of body 1. The front end jofhandle18 abuts against shoulder 4 of body 1 and a retainer ring `20 engages an inner groove made in the front portion of the handle 18 and at the external periphery of tubular extension 3, in order to prevent removal of the handle 18 from its engagement with body 1, while allowing rotation of handle 18 relative to body 1. The bolt 17 has a square portion 17 engageable with a square hole made in the handle in order to prevent relative rotation between the bolt 17 and handle 18. The head of bolt 17 protrudes from the rear end of the handle 18 and forms a nut shaped head 21 which can be engaged by a key or the like, if desired, in order to exert more force for rotating the bolt 17. The device of the invention operates as follows:
It is noted that the mechanism of the invention enables movement of jaw 7 even when said jaw is arranged to move at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the wrench with the jaw gripping faces parallel to the long axis of the wrench as shown in the drawings. Obviously the actuating mechanism is also suitable for use in association with a wrench having angle jaws.
It is also noted that there is no demultiplication between the movement of the sector element 8 and the movable jaw and that by providing a long pitch for the bolt 17 and the inner thread of the piston member 12, it is possible to provide a wrench in which only a small number of turns of the handle 18 is necessary to move the jaw 7 between a fully closed and fully opened position. Thus, the wrench of the invention is very quickly adjusted to grip different sizes of nuts or bolt heads.
With one hand, it is possible to grip a nut or bolt head and tighten the same by rotation of the handle and practically simultaneously screw or unscrew the nut or bolt head by a swinging movement of the wrench.
While a preferred embodiment in accordance with the present invention has been illustrated and described, it is understood that various modifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A wrench comprising a body of substantially fiat shape having a fixed jaw at one end, and a tubular extension at the other end, a tubular handle rotatably mounted on the tubular extension of said body, a bolt secured to said handle and extending therein, a non-r0- tatable piston member slidably inserted within said extension of said body, and having an inwardly threaded bore for threadedly receiving said bolt, said body having a cavity made therein, a toothed sector shaped element pivotally mounted within said cavity, a link pivotally connecting said piston member and said sector shaped element near the periphery of the latter, and a movable jaw having an integral rack portion extending at an angle to said jaw, and slidably engaging a transverse bore made in said body, said rack in meshing engagement with the teeth of said sector shaped element whereby rotation of said handle will cause longitudinal movement of said piston member, rotation of said sector shaped. element and sliding transverse movement of said rack member to move' of a tool engageable withl saidY nut shaped head.
4'. A wrench asclaimedV iri claim 3, further including means for rotatably retaining said handle on'said tubular extension of said body.
