)1y invention relates to improvements in siriani-mothers, and the object is to prevent the disagreeable noise produced by the steam escaping from locomotive safcty-valves,and atJ ms of the Same time to contro A,the fire by me:

the draft in the chimney, and also to prevent the too rapid generation of steam by the tire becoming too hot, und thusv also saving fuel.

The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of cci-tain parts, as will be more fully described hereinafter, and specilically pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.

The operation is as follows: When thesteam escapes from the safety-valve into the pipe H and passes into the ring I, ity blows through the small holes, and aseends slowly np the smoke-stack without noise, and at the saine time checks the draft. by means of the film formed by the steam blowing across the .stack from all directions.

I do not, however, conine myself to a. ring or part of a ring having numerous perforations, as the saddle or any part ofthe stack itself can be used for the same purpose.
