To ail :rh/:m it muy concern.-
thercby shutting.; oft` the draft of the chimney 3e it known that I, Airuno lli-zlcxi-zv. a citipxutly,wl|lle thc steam will escape gently and zen ofthe lnitcd Statt-s, residing at Boston, 1n thc county of Suffolk und Stale of )lassa- 5 chnsctts. have invented certain new and nnefnl Iniprovcnimn s in Stcant-MLxtllerS; and I do hereby declaro the following to be a full, clear, and exact h cription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itpertains to make und use the same.
)1y invention relates to improvements in siriani-mothers, and the object is to prevent the disagreeable noise produced by the steam escaping from locomotive safcty-valves,and atJ ms of the Same time to contro A,the fire by me:
the draft in the chimney, and also to prevent the too rapid generation of steam by the tire becoming too hot, und thusv also saving fuel.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of cci-tain parts, as will be more fully described hereinafter, and specilically pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.
Like letters ofrefcrcnce indica-te like parts in theA dillerent figures of the drawings, in which Figure-.l represents a longitudinal section of n locomotive-boiler with my muttler in posillon. Fig. 2 is a. plan view ofthe saddle and perforated ring. Fig. 3 isa modification of the saine.
lo the drawings, A represents the boiler, with the ordinary fornace F, fines B, smokenrch C, and chimney or smoke-stack D. The stcanrdorne E has arranged initstop the ordinary eafetywalve, G, which is incloscd in a hood,y, so that when blowing ot steam it must escape through the pipe H,leading to ,o the sinoliestack l). A saddle, S, of the ordinary hollow kind, is arranged on said smokestnck, and in thespace formed within the saddle is placed a ring or pertofa. ring, l, formed cfa tube or pipe, and provided with a numberof tino holes or pcrfonitions, i. To this ring the pipe Il in attached, so that when the safety-valve is blowing off by excessive pressum the steam will escape thmngh the perforationc and form a film or sheet ofsteam,
-i h, leading,r
through thc chimney nithont making any noise. ily this menos there will .also be no waste of fncl or steam. lfdcsired, the ring l may be arranged in l the upper partofthe smoke-stack with n pipe, to it; or there may be two rings, t one above and onel below. The operation is as follows: When thesteam escapes from the safety-valve into the pipe H and passes into the ring I, ity blows through the small holes, and aseends slowly np the smoke-stack without noise, and at the saine time checks the draft. by means of the film formed by the steam blowing across the .stack from all directions.
l am awarethat- .steam from the safetyvalve has been conveyed into the exhaust-passages of the cylinders, also into the sniokearcb of the boiler, and also into the smokestack to act as a blower to increase the draft and the intensity` ofthe fire, thus wasting fuel and water, vand often enuisiin,r great and dangerous pressure until relieved by the blowing oltfroin a. second valve, or by cooling oi the fire to prevenn serions accidents. I do not, however, conine myself to a. ring or part of a ring having numerous perforations, as the saddle or any part ofthe stack itself can be used for the same purpose. For instnee, the saddle, especially, provided with the apertures for the steampipe and connections. A dripqiipe Afor the condensed steam may also be castJ with th-4 saddle.
'By arranging the drip K in connection with the ring I any water passing over from the boiler, as well as the condcnsownter, can bo easily got rid of.
Having thus described my invention, I'claiin isi 1. In u steam-muffler, the combination o. the pipe leading from the safety-valve with a perforated ring arranged in the saddle of the smoke-stack, and aring placed in the upper cnd of the smoke-steek and connected by a vertical pipe with tho lower ring, all enlisted tiolly as specified.
