BY mw United. rates The present invention generally relates to a bracket structure or supporting structure in the form of a curtain rod bracket adapted to be mounted at the upper corners of a window frame or the like for purposes of supporting a window curtain, drapery or the like.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a window attached curtain rod bracket in which the supporting element which is connected directly with the curtain rod is vertically adjustable upon the bracket element attached to the window frame for enabling the curtain rod to be leveled thus assuring that the curtain or drapery will hang vertically in front of the window thereby providing a neat appearance and eliminating the necessity of damaging the window frame by virtue of driving several different nail holes therein or inserting screw threaded fasteners in several different elevated positions in order to properly level the curtain rod.
' Another very important feature of the present invention is the provision of a curtain rod bracket that is engaged with the window frame and is supported thereon without the employment of anyextraneous fastening devices such as nails or screws with the supporting bracket being of sheet metal construction having a pointed projection on the rear corner thereof for insertion behind the window frame and generally between the window frame and the surface of the wall.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a curtain rod bracket of an adjustable nature in which the supporting element for the curtain rod may be adjustable at certain predetermined fixed intervals or adjustable at any point along the longitudinal length of an adjustment slot provided in the curtain rod bracket.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a curtain rod bracket which is easy to install without the use of any necessity of accurate measurement for properly orientating the supporting elements of the bracket, simplicity in construction, adaptation for various types of window frame and generally inexpensive to manufacture.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the upper end of a window and window frame with the curtain rod bracket of the present invention mounted on each corner thereof;
FIGURE 2 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially along a vertical plane extending through the longitudinal center of the curtain rod bracket;
FIGURE 3 is an exploded group rear perspective view of the curtain rod bracket illustrating the structure thereof;
FIGURE 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the bracket is constructed; and
FIGURE 5 is a sectional view similar to FIGURE 2 illustrating a modified form of the present invention.
Referring now specifically to the drawings, the numeral generally designates the curtain rod bracket of the present invention which has a supporting element generally designated by the numeral 12 thereon which engages and supports a curtain rod (not shown). The curtain rod brackets 10 are mounted at the upper corners of a window frame 14 in the usual manner for supporting atent f a drape or curtain in overlying relation to the window The curtain rod bracket d0 includes a front upper panel 18 and a front side panel 20 butted together along a mitered line of juncture 22. Integral with the panels 18 At the juncture of the rear edges of the panels 24 and 26, there is provided an inwardly and downwardly extending pointed tang or projection 28 for insertion behind the window frame and generally between the window frame and the wall structure on which the window frame is mounted. Also, the rear edge of the side panel 26 is provided with an inwardly extending flange 30 for reinforcement purposes and which may also extend behind the window frame 14. The flange 30 also serves to reinforce the bracket structure and the fact that the tang 23 is integral with the flange 3i) and underlies the rear:
edge of the panel 24 reinforces the entire structure and maintains it in rigid condition. Also, the front panel 20 is provided with an outwardly extended rib 32 which serves to reinforce the panel 20 and also provides a.
longitudinally projecting rib having a series of equally spaced apertures or slot-like openingsB therein. Also, the juncture between the front top panel 18 and the top panel 24 is provided with a slot-like opening 36. The openings 34 and opening 36 are in approximately vertical alignment and are equally spaced in relation to each other.
The supporting element 12 includes a mounting plate 38 having a pair of rearwardly struck and downwardly extending tangs or hooks 40 thereon for sliding detachable engagement with a pair of the apertures 34 or one of the apertures 34 and the opening 36 thereby permitting vertical adjustment of the supporting element 12. The relationship of the hooks or tangs 40 and the apertures 34 is clearly illustrated in FIGURE 2. Projecting from the outer face of the mounting plate 38 is a curved outwardly extending tongue 42 or the like for engagement with a curtain rod. The configuration of the tongue 42 may vary depending upon the type of curtain rod involved and whether it fits into the end of the curtain rod or engages the curtain rod in any other manner.
With this form of the invention, the supporting element 12 may be supported in a series of vertically adjusted positions along the vertical length of the bracket 10 with the bracket 10 being installed on the window frame without requiring any fasteners whatsoever and it only being necessary to slide the projection or tang 28 behind the window frame and also the flange 30 may be slid behind the window frame.
In FIGURE 5, the structure of the bracket is quite similar except that the front side panel 20 is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 44 in lieu of the plurality of apertures 34. The slot 44 is formed in a rib 34 projected outwardly beyond the remainder of the front side panel 20'. The mounting plate 38 of the supporting element 12 is provided with apertures 46 receiving screw threaded fasteners 48 which may conveniently have cap nuts 50 on the outer end thereof and tapered heads of polygonal configuration received in the tapered surface of the groove 44. The mating tapered or inclined structure of the surface of the slot 44 and the heads of the screw threaded fasteners 48 will prevent rotation of the screw threaded fasteners and enable the cap nut 50 to be tightened for retaining the supporting element 12 in vertically adjusted position thereby supporting Patented Aug. 14,1962
a curtain rod 52 in position by virtue of the supporting elements 12' on either end of the curtain rod 52 to be vertically adjusted to level the curtain rod 52 and also to orientate it properly in relation to the window and window frame. The entire structure may be constructed of sheet metal of a suitable gauge for providing sufficient rigidity thereby rendering the device relatively inexpensive to manufacture with the device being readily adapted to well known manufacturing procedures so that stamping operations may be employed for constructing the device thereby rendering the device quite inexpensive to manufacture.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A curtain rod support assembly comprising a bracket adapted to be supported from a window frame, and a supporting member vertically adjustably mounted on said bracket, said bracket including an inverted generally L- shaped member including an upper horizontal leg and a depending vertical leg, said horizontal leg including a top flange adapted to lie against the upper surface of the window frame, and a front flange adapted to lie against the front surface of a window frame, said vertical leg including a side flange and a front flange adapted to engage the corner edge of a side window frame, a depending pointed flange on said bracket at the upper portion of the edge of the side flange remote from the front flange on the vertical leg for insertion behind the upper corner of a window frame, said front flange of the vertical leg being provided with a plurality of equally spaced vertically aligned generally rectangular openings formed therein, the top flange of the horizontal leg having a slot therein adjacent its juncture with the front flange of the horizontal leg and disposed in approximately vertical alignment with the openings in the front flange of the vertical leg, said supporting member including a mounting plate, means projecting from the mounting plate for supporting engagement with a curtain rod or the like, said mounting plate including a pair of rearwardly struck and downwardly extending projections having the lower ends thereof offset rearwardly from the mounting plate and inserted through a pair of openings or one of the openings and the slot for vertically adjustably supporting the mounting plate in position on the bracket.
