- This invention relates to new and useful improvements in apparatus for positioning and supporting small diameter cylindrical rolls for rotation at relatively high speeds in honing either with abrasive faced flexible tape or a stone, and it is among the objects thereof to provide a pair of pinch rolls of relatively small diameter withdriving backup rolls of relatively large diameter whereby very small diameter rollers or cylinders may be driven by the pinch rolls thus allowing room at the top for the application of the honing tape or stone.

- Apparatus for honing annular bodies as set forth in claim 1 in which the means for displacing the pinch roll to release the finished annular body comprises a swing frame resting on a cam that is connected to one of the levers to allow the pinch roll to separate by gravity in one position of the cam and to press said pinch roll against the annular bodies to drive the same in another position of the cam.

Filed July 7, 1960, Ser. No. 41,325 6 Claims. (Cl. 511-236) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in apparatus for positioning and supporting small diameter cylindrical rolls for rotation at relatively high speeds in honing either with abrasive faced flexible tape or a stone, and it is among the objects thereof to provide a pair of pinch rolls of relatively small diameter withdriving backup rolls of relatively large diameter whereby very small diameter rollers or cylinders may be driven by the pinch rolls thus allowing room at the top for the application of the honing tape or stone.
It is a further object of the invention to provide apparatus for positioning and supporting cylinders or rolls in which a pair of pinch rolls are each driven by a plurality of backup rolls, all of which backup rolls are driven by a common drive element.
-It is a further object of the invention to provide apparatus for positioning and supporting for rotation cylin drical or roller members by means of a pair of pinch rolls supported by and driven by backup rolls in which the backup rolls and pinch rolls are mounted on a pair of frames, one of which is adjustable to the ditferent diameters of the cylinders or rollers being worked upon and in which one of said pinch rolls and backup roll members are mounted to be movable from the cylinder or roll worked upon to permit the latter to drop into a discharge chute.
The invention will become more apparent from a consideration of the accompanying drawing constituting a part hereof in which like reference characters designate like parts and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a plan view of apparatus embodying the principles of this invention;
FIGURE 2 is a front elevational view thereof; and,
FIGURE 3 is a vertical elevation, partially in section, taken along the line 33 of FIGURE 2.
In the drawing, the number 1 constitutes a base on which is mounted a bifurcated member 2 supporting a lever 3 that is pivotally mounted thereon at 4. As shown in FIGURES 1 and 3, the lever or arm 3 carries a shaft 5 having a belt pulley 6 at one end and a sprocket wheel 7 at the other, the sprocket wheel being in alignment with four sprocket wheels designated by the reference numerals 8, 9, 10 and 11, FIGURE 2. A single sprocket chain diagrammatically illustrated by the dot and dash line 12 passes around all of the sprocket wheels 7 through '11 and is maintained in a taut driving position by a coil spring 13 acting on the lever 3, FIGURE 2, to pull it downward. One end of the coil spring 13 is connected to the base 1 as shown.
A hearing block 14-, FIGURE 3, is mounted on base 1 and a pair of bearing yokes 15 and 16 are pivotally mounted on the bearing block 14 by pins 17 and 18. Each bearing yoke has two arms 15, 15A and 16, 16A for journaling spindles 15B, 15C and 16B, 16C driven by sprocket wheels 8, 9, 1i] and 11. Extending through the bearing arms 16 and 16A, FIGURE 3, are pins 19 and 19A, the ends of which engage bearing blocks 20 and 20A in which are journaled the bearing ends 21 and 21A of a pinch roll 22. A similar pinch roll 23 is mounted in the bearing arms 15 and 15A, as shown in FIGURE 1. Pins 19-19A are provided with heads 2424A against which abut coil springs 25 and 25A which draw the pinch rolls 22 against a pair of backup rolls 26 and 27, these backup rolls having 3,647,989 Patented Aug. 7, 1962 flanges 26A and 27A that engage relatively long extended necks 23 and 28A of the pinch rolls 22 and 23. As shown in FIGURE 2, the arm 16C of the yoke 16 is disposed between a pair of adjustable nuts 29 and 30 mounted on a threaded bolt 31 extending up from the base 1. By adjusting the nuts 29 and 30, the upright arm of the yoke 16 is angularly adjust-able to move the pinch rolls 22 and 23 to and away firom each other to engage the work such as the cylinder 32 that is disposed therebetween. The short arm 15A of the yoke 15 is provided with a slot 33 to which a link 34 is connected by a pin 35, FIGURE 1. The link is connected to a swing frame 36 pivoted at 37 and provided with a follower 38 that rides a cam 39. A turn buckle adjustment 46 is provided on link 34 to adjust the' position of the backup rollers carried by cranks 15 and 15A and the pinch roller 23 in relation to the cylinder or roller 32 acted upon which, in FIGURE 2, is a honing tape 41 passing over the end of a honing shoe 42 to contact the work such as the cylindrical roll 32. The roll 32 is supported on a rail 43 which in turn is supported on the extension 44 of roller block 14.
With reference to FIGURES 1 and 3, it will be noted that the flanges 27A of the short rollers engage the end faces of the pinch rollers 22 and 23 to maintain their proper alignment and the two sets of flanges of each pair of rolls on each of the cranks provides a groove in which the roll necks 28 and 23A, FIGURE 3, rest. In this manner, the pinch rolls are anti-frictionally mounted, the rela- .tive diameters of the pinch roll necks and the flanges of the backup rolls being such that very little friction results from the pressure asserted by the flanges on the roll necks. The yoke bearing arrns 15 and 15A act by the weight of the link 34 and swing frame 36 to separate the pinch roll from the work roll 32 by gravity, and the cam acts to assert pressure by forcing the link vertically upward to move the crank in the direction of the flanges of the backup rolls engaging the necks of the pinch or drive rolls. By means of this pressure, the driving force supplied by the sprocket chain is transmitted through the backup rolls to the pinch rolls and thence to the roll 32 to cause the latter to rotate at high speed to subject it to a honing operation by the abrasive tape 41.
When the roll 32 is honed, swing frame 36 drops and allows pinch roll 23 to fall back to release finished roll 32 to drop on chute 45 from which it rolls to a receiving receptacle.
The present invention is a continuation-in-part of application Ser. No. 854,740, filed November 23, 1959, that has matured as United States Letters Patent 3,021,648, granted February 20, 1962.
Although one embodiment of the invention has been herein illustrated and described, it will be evident to those skilled in the art that various modifications may be made in the details of construction without departing from the principles herein set forth.
I claim:
1. Apparatus for honing annular bodies comprising a support for said bodies in alignment with an abrasive honing material, a pair of pinch rolls engaging the sides of said annular bodies for rotating the same and a plurality of backup. rolls for supporting and driving said pinch rolls, said pinch rolls and backup rolls being mounted on a plurality of levers pivoted on a bearing block, means for driving said backup rolls, means for adjusting the position of one of said pinch rolls relative to the annular bodies being honed and means for displacing the other of said pinch rolls at intervals to release the finished annular bodies.-
2. Apparatus for honing annular bodies as set forth in claim 1 in which each of the pair of pinch rolls is provided with a pair of backup rolls and in which the pinch rolls have long cylindrical neck portions and the backup rolls have staggered flanged portions for receiving the spa /ps9 necks of the pinch rolls therebetween to constitute an antifriction bearing therefor and the pinch rolls are provided with bearings that are retracted in the direction of the bearing faces of the backup rolls to maintain rolling contact of the necks of the pinch rolls with the spaced flanged portions of the backup rolls.
3. Apparatus for honing annular bodies comprising a support for said bodies in alignment with an abrasive honingmaterial, a pair of pinch rolls engaging the sides of said annular bodies for rotating the same and a plurality of backup rolls for supporting and driving said pinch rolls, said pinch rolls and backup rolls being mounted on shafts journalled in bifurcated arms, and drive means for said backup rolls, said pinch rolls being mounted in bearings that are yieldingly biased to urge said pinch rolls in contact with said backup rolls, said bifurcated arms being or" bell crank shape, one of said arms having a lever that is adjustable relative to the base of the support to fix the position of the pinch roll carried thereby in relation to the annular bodies being honed and the other of said bell crank roll supports having a cam operated swing frame and connected linkage to displace said support and pinch roll to release the finished annular bodies.
4. Apparatus for honing annular bodies as set forth in claim 3 in which the shafts of the backup rolls are provided with sprocket Wheels connected by a common chain and a drive shaft having a sprocket Wheel in engagement with said chain to drive all of said sprocket wheels simultaneously, said drive shaft being mounted with means nor- 4. mally urging the drive sprocket Wheel in a direction to apply a tension on the drive chain.
5. Apparatus for honing annular bodies as set forth in claim 1 in Which the pinch rolls for driving the annular bodies are of a suificiently small diameter and the backup rolls are spaced a distance from said pinch rolls so that the abrasive honing element has access to the annular bodies Without interference by the drive rolls.
6. Apparatus for honing annular bodies as set forth in claim 1 in which the means for displacing the pinch roll to release the finished annular body comprises a swing frame resting on a cam that is connected to one of the levers to allow the pinch roll to separate by gravity in one position of the cam and to press said pinch roll against the annular bodies to drive the same in another position of the cam.
