Filed July 7, 1961, Ser. No. 122,466 3 Claims. (Cl. 15-299) This invention relates generally to holding devices and more particularly to holders for abrasive pads therefor and the like.

Practically all persons performing kitchen chores are acquainted with the use of metal wool pads for scouring pots, pans and other similar objects. Many such persons have had the unpleasant experience of receiving a metal splinter from such metal wool pads in the hand or finger, which has on occasion resulted in infection.

Accordingly it is an object of the present invention to provide a holding device for steel wool pads which will eliminate the need for the hand or fingers coming in contact with the metal wool during the securing operation, and thereby will prevent the above described injuries.

It is another object of the invention to provide a steel wool pad holder having a convenient handle which will permit easier manipulation of the pad during operation and which will keep the hand and fingers sufficiently free of the wool pad to prevent morning, scraping or reddening of the skin from the steel pad.

It is a still further object of the invention to provide a holder for steel wool pads, having a longitudinal handle which will permit ready manipulation of the tool into interior corners of stoves, broilers or other objects being scoured.

It is still another object of the invention to provide a steel wool pad holder employing plain metal wool pads, or pads containing soap, which will transversely curb the pad for better adaptability for cleaning the corners of various articles to be scoured.

Other objects of the invention are to provide a holder for steel wool pads bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and eflicient in operation.

FIGURE 1 is a side view of the present invention shown in elevation;

FIG. 2 is a top plan View thereof;

FIG. 3 is a top plan view of a modified form of the invention, shown partly broken away; and

FIG. 4 is a side view shown in elevation of a modified construction, shown in FIG. 3.

Referring now in detail to the drawing, the numeral represents an assembled holding device made in ac cordance with the present invention and wherein there is a bottom plate 11, a top plate 12 and a handle element 13.

The bottom plate made preferably of plastic material is generally of circular shape conforming to a conventional pad and having oppositely disposed a pair of fiat sections 15 along the circular periphery 14. mounted to the plate and project upwardly therefrom, the studs 17 being located radially on opposite sides of the center of the plate.

The top plate 12, also made of plastic, has an outline shape similar to the bottom plate and is provided with a central clearance opening 18 and .a pair of clearance openings 19 to receive the post and studs respectively.

The handle element 13 is also of plastic and has a convenient rounded knob 20 on a shank 21 within which a threaded opening is provided to extend upwardly from the bottom.

For use of this holder, the steel wool pad 22 is provided with a pair of soft plastic tabs 23 on opposite sides of the periphery, which may be attached by staples or the like. Each tab has an opening 24 therein for engagement with one of the studs.

To assemble the device one of the tabs is simply placed over a stud, the pad being then pulled tightly against the underside of the lower plate and the other tab being then placed over the other stud. It is important here to note that the tabs should be stapled to the pad in a manner so that by folding the plastic tabs over the staple, scratching of the article being scoured by the staples is prevented. The top plate is then placed over this with the clearance holes engaging the studs. The handle is then screwed down over the threaded post to retain the device in an assembled condition and the device is ready for use in a conventional manner.

A modified construction, illustrated in FIGS. 3 and 4,

shows an assembled device 30 having a body element 31 comprising a linear hollow handle 32 which is longitudinally curved at one end, and attached thereto by means of rivets 33 is a spoonlike circular member 34 which is curved in a longitudinal direction only.

An upstanding stud 35 having an oversized head portion 36 is provided for engagement with an opening 37 of a tab 38 stapled to the metal wool pad 39. Another tab 40 afixed to the opposite side of the periphery of the pad has an opening 41 (not shown) which is engaged by a threaded stud 42 having a transversely curved and enlarged head portion 43 to conform with the handle shape, the stud passing through the handle and being engaged by a wing nut 44.

Assembly of the pad to the holder in the modified construction is generally similar in part to that described above. In use this device may be employed in the well known manner.

While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.

What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. In a metal wool pad and holder the combination of a metal wool pad having thereon tabs oppositely disposed along its periphery and openings in said tabs, and a separate disc shaped metal wool padholder having a pair of studs on one face of the holder in spaced relationship equivalent to that of said openings in said tabs when said pad is draped over the other face of the holder with the tabs extending around and over the edge of said holder and having clamping means to retain said pad and said holder in affixed relationship.

2 In a metal wool pad and holder, the combination as set forth in claim 1, wherein said holder is comprised of an upper and lower plate, said lower plate having upstanding studs and an upstanding central threaded post, and said upper plate having openings in spaced relation to engage said studs and said post, and a handle element having a threaded opening to receive said threaded post.

In a metal wool pad and holder the combination as set forth in claim 1, wherein said holder hasa longitudinal handle, one end of which is arced, a corresponding arced circular disc afi'lxed thereto and having one of said studs fixed on the concave side near the extreme end of the are on the handle, and the other stud being threaded and detachably attached through the handle at the other end of the are by means of a wing nut.
