In looms in which various types of yarn are used, for instance four different colors, reserve bobbin magazines are employed in which weft bobbins must be inserted manually. These reserve bobbin magazines include one or more vertical guideways or vertical compartments in Which the reserve bobbins are stacked in parallel. If
these compartments are closed on all four sides, the bob-- bins must be allowed to fall from above the magazine into the individual compartments when replenishing the magazine. This, however, may result in damaging the yarn arrangement on the bobbins, i.e. the yarn may be disarranged or the bobbins may not lie in parallel stacked relationship which leads to trouble, if this is notnoted and corrected. In order to avoid this magazines are employed in which the compartments are left open in front so that the tips of the bobbins with the tip bunches thereon project axially outwardly from the compartments. In this way it has been possible to stack the bobbins in the compartments by holding them by the tip.
In order to prevent the reserve bobbins from being shaken out of the magazine due to the vibrations of the loom or other causes the use of guide rails or stops has been necessary, so that insertion of the bobbins from the front end is impossible. This involves disadvantages in that first of all it is cumbersome to guide each individual bobbin manually down into the compartments which often have a relatively large vertical height and secondly several reserve bobbins cannot be stacked at the same time with one manipulation. Moreover, having to stack the bobbins from above, the magazine results in easily prematurely stripping off the tip bunches or displacing, loosening, or otherwise disarranging the tip bunches so that subsequently the bunch can no longer fulfill its function. The guide rails or stops therefore have proven to be troublesome in that they render difficult the insertion of the bobbins into the magazine compartments and favor I up-ending of the bobbins. In order to be able to guide the bobbins manually down into the compartments it has beenfurthermore necessary to provide sufficient space between the individual compartments in order to provide accessibility to the stacks in the individual adjacent compartments. t v
A principal object of the present inventionis the provision of magazines with compartments having walls defining guideways for stacking reserve bobbins therein in 3,043,345 Patented July 10, 1962 magazine provided with a built-in bobbin lock according to one of the possible forms of embodiment of the invention;
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view of another embodiment of the reserve bobbin lock of the invention;
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view of another embodiment of the bobbin lock; and
FIG. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view of still another modification of the bobbin lock according to the invention.
According to the drawing an embodiment of a reserve bobbin magazine is illustrated in FIG. 1 and is provided with vertical compartments, 1, 2, 3, 4. The magazine is generally designated with the reference numeral 5. The magazine is illustrated as having a plurality of reserve bobbins 6 stacked in parallel and other bobbins being lowered into position in their respective compartments. The magazine shown comprises four guideways 1, 2, 3, 4 which are separated from each other by vertical side Walls 7. On the front and at the top of the magazine the walls 7 are provided with funnel-shaped bevelled edges 7a, 7b adapted to facilitate the introduction of the bobbins into the magazine.
The magazine illustrated in FIG. 1 is of the type that can be loaded from above when the stacks of reserve bobbins readily permit this. The reserve bobbins 6 may also be introduced into the vertical compartments axially from the open front of the magazine compartments which are illustrated. However, this type of reserve bobbin magazine construction does not provide for precluding the bobbins from 'axial travel to the front of the magazine due to loom vibrations thereby backing-off and falling 7 rod 9a.
out of the magazine. According to the invention bobbin releasable locks in the form of deflectable means are provided for permitting loading of the bobbins into a magazine as described above. The deflectable means here-after described precludes the reserve bobbins from backing-out and falling out.
A magazine 5 according to the invention is illustrated in FIGS. 2-5 in which the same reference numerals employed in FIG. 1 designate similar parts in order to simplify the drawing and correlate the embodiments of the invention. In FIG. 2 vertical bobbin guide pieces 8 are attached to the side walls 7 intermediate the outer walls.
Between the bobbin guide pieces 8 and every sidewall 7 of each compartment 1, 2, 3, 4 there is attached one end of a leaf spring 9 whose other end projects into a space 1a, 2a, 3a, 4a or into the path of the bobbin to be introduced axially into the compartment. Other features of the inventionwill appear from the following description and claims, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein there are shown purely by way of example some forms or embodiments of the invention and in which:

' The bobbins 6,.which preferably have at their forward tip 6a a bunch 6b and at the opposite end a butt 6c, are pushed axially into the various compartments from the front, as shown by the third bobbin from the left in FIG. 2. In inserting the bobbins axially into the magazine the butt 6c engages the leaf spring 9 which gives way so that the bobbins can be introduced to the rear of the compartments into the rest position in the compartment. The rounded end 9a of the leaf spring 9 serves the latter slides thereon. In the final rest position, illustrated by the other three bobbins shown in FIG. 2, the free end 9a of the leaf spring 9 is disposed behind the bobbin butts 60 so as to secure them from backing-out and falling out of the open compartments 1, 2, 3, 4.
In the embodiment according to FIG. 3, the reserve bobbin lock consists of a rail 10 extending the full height of the compartment and hinged to a sidewall 7 by a pivot 10a. The hinge or pivot. 101a has mounted on it a torsion spring (not shown) which tends to swing the rail lil into the path of the bobbins 6 to be introduced into the respective compartments. The action of the loch is the same as that of the previously described leaf spring, i.e. 'the free longitudinal edge of the rail 1% positions itself in front of the butt Gcof introduced bobbins 6, so that they are secured from falling out.
In the embodiment of the defiectable lock means according to FIG. 4" there is shown a symmetrical mount of the leaf springs adapted to secure the bobbins 6 still better from fallingv out. In this embodiment of the magazine comprising the invention each side of each compartment has arranged thereon a leaf spring 9 whose free longitudinal edge 9a is disposed behind the bobbin butts 6c, on both sides. Alternatively, instead of two leaf springs 9, resilient rails it according to FIG 3 may beprovided and arranged symmetrically.
In the embodiment according to FIG. 5, the individual locks consist of one leafspring 11 with'a bent free end 11a, on a sidewall 7 of each compartment 1, 2, 3, 4 together with a projection 7c which is arranged on the opposite sidewall 7 and extends like a ledge for the height of the compartment, The leaf spring 11, 11a presses the bobbins 6, introduced into the compartment, against the side of the projection 7c which engages 'behind the inner face of the butt 6c of the bobbins introduced. The spring presses the bobbin butts 60 against nose 7c. These locks prevent the bobbins from falling out or moving forward in the axial direction.
It will be understood that in each embodiment of the defiectable lock means the invention is not limited to the specific designs and applications described hereinbefore and illustrated in the drawing, as it may also be adopted in single-shuttle looms with automatic bobbinchange which, for instance, are provided with a zigzag compartment.
Also for four-color automatic looms, a further embodiment may be provided, in which two of the tour described and illustrated compartments are replaced by mountable boxes with bobbins, for example, for the colors'whic'h are most often required, whereas the other compartments have to be filled manually.
' Through the lock according to the, invention, the initially described inconveniences are obviated. The bobbinsneed 'no longer be introduced from above the magazine. Thus in the case of bobbins with tip bunches the risk of premature stripping of the tip bunches is considerablydirninished and the work of introducing the bobbins appreciably facilitated. Several bobbins may be introducedfinto the magazine at the same time, in one operation. Moreover, in the bobbin magazine according to the invention, spaces between the compartments are no longer required. Thus the filling of the middle .compartments in magazines having more than two compartments is much facilitated. In addition, in the construction of such a bobbin magazine space will be saved, inasmuch as the compartments may be arranged close to each other.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a reserve bobbin magazine, in combination, a
" plurality of spaced walls forming at least one guideway to receive bobbins therein in parallel, stacked relationship, said guideway having one side open to allow axial insertion of the bobbins therein, means comprising deflectable means for releasably holding the bobbins from being displaced axially outwardly of the magazine once disposed in said guideway and constructed to allow the bobbins to movein parallel longitudinally of the guideway, said defiectable means comprising at least one resilient member having a free defiectable end portion extending inwardly into said guideway and in a direction away from said open side, said end portion being disposed in position to be deflected by said bobbin when inserted into the guideway and away from the path of travel of said bobbins when being inserted axially into said guideway and constantly biased in a direction toward the bobbins, and said end portion being positioned to engage a butt end portion of said bobbins at least when said bobbins move axially in a direction toward said open side.
2. In a reserve bobbin magazine, in combination, a plurality of spaced walls forming at least one guideway to receive bobbins therein in parallel, stacked relationship, said guideway having one side open to allow axial insertion of the bobbins therein, means comprising defiectable means for releasably holding the bobbins from being displaced axially outwardly to allow the bobbins to move in parallel longitudinally of the guideway, said defiectable means comprising at least one resilient member having a free defiectable rounded end portion extending inwardly into said guideway and in a direction away from said open side, said end portion being disposed in position to be deflected by said bobbin when inserted into the guideway and away from the path of travel of said bobbins when being inserted axially into said guideway and constantly biased in a direction toward the bobbins, and said end portion being positioned to engage a butt end portion of said bobbins at least when said bobbins move axially in a direction toward saidopen side.
3. In a reserve bobbin magazine, in combination, a plurality of spaced walls forming at least one guideway to receive bobbins therein in parallel, stacked relationship, said guideway having one side open to allow axial insertion of the bobbins therein, means comprising deflectable means for releasably holding the bobbins from being displaced axially outwardly of the magazine once disposed in said guideway and constructed to allow the bobbins to move longitudinally of the guideway, said defiectable means comprising a resilient member having a free defiectable end portion extending. inwardly into said guideway in a direction away from said open side, the first-mentioned means'further comprising a projection extending inwardly into said guideway substantially the longitudinal length of the guideway, and said end portion being disposed in position to be deflected by said bobbin when inserted into the guideway and away from the path of travel of said bobbins when being inserted axially. into said guideway and constantly biased in a direction toward engaging a butt end of the bobbins thereby to engage the butt end portions of said bobbins and bias them in a direction toward engaging said projection to keep the bobbins from moving axially outwardly of said guideway through said open side.
4. In a reserve bobbin magazine, in combination, a plurality of spaced walls forming at least one guideway to receive bobbins therein in parallel, stacked relationship,
said guideway having one side open to allow axial insertion of the bobbins therein, means comprising defiectable means for releasably holding the bobbins from being displaced axially outwardly of the magazine once disposed in said guideway and constructed to allow the bobbins to move in parallel longitudinally. of the guideway, said defiectable means comprising a pivotally mounted member having, a free defiectable end portion extending inwardly into said guideway and in a direction away from said open side, said end portion being disposed in position to be deflected by said bobbin when inserted into the guideway and away from the path of travel of said bobbins when being inserted axially into said guideway, means constantly biasing. said end portion in a direction toward the bobbins, and said end portion being positioned inoperation toengage a butt end portion of; said bobbins at least when said bobbins move axially in a. direction toward said open side.
5. In a reserve bobbin magazine, in combination, a plurality of spaced walls forming at least one guideway to receive bobbins therein in parallel, stacked relationship, and guideway having one side open to allow axial insertion of the bobbins therein, means comprising deflectable means for releasably holding the bobbins from being displaced axially outwardly of the magazine once disposed in said guideway and constructed to allow the bobbins to move in parallel longitudinally of the guideway, said deflectable means comprising a pair of symmetrically mounted resilient members mounted on opposite sides of said guideway and each having a free defiectable end portion extending inwardly into said guideway and in a direction away from said open side, the end portions being disposed in position to be deflected by said bobbin when inserted into the guideway and away from the path of travel of said bobbins when being inserted axially into said guideway and constantly biased 6 in a direction toward the bobbins, and said end portions being positioned to engage a butt end portion of said bobbins at least when said bobbins move axially in a direction toward said open side.
