UNITED dSTATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN C. BLOOM, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO HIRAM B. MILLER, OF SAME PLACE.
DRIVE-CHAIN, t
SPECIFICATION forming `part of Letters Patent No. 293,407, dated February 12, 1884.
Application nien september 2s, issn. (area51.)
To @ZZ wtoml it Vmay con/cern:
'Be it known that I, JOHN C. BLooM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalarnazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Chain-Belt, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to that class of chainbelts the links of which are providedwithV open coupling-hooks formed integral therewith, and has for its object certain improvements to facilitate their utility and operation;
In the drawings forming apart of this specication, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figurel is a side view of a section of my improved belt; Fig. 2, top view of same Fig.3, side view of link, having the coupling-bar Amade the other side up, and Fig. 4 detached portions of Fig. l.
The links of the chain are constructed with the side bars connected by a cylindricalcoupling-bar, D, at one end, and an open-hook, c, at the other end, adapted to receive the coupling-bar D and form cylindrical bearings therefor, said hook being vjust suflicientlylarge to receive said coupling-bar. At one end of the side bars are formed convex shoulders e e and at the other end concave shoulders t t, the convexity of `one conforming to the concavity of the other, andall having a like radius. I form the portion n, Fig. 1, on a fiat oblique angle, and` the shoulders AS S below the concave shoulders t t on a like angle in line with portion n, to facilitatethe coupling andx the angle of thelinks whilecoupling and uncouping.
In the operation, referring to Figs. l and 2,
it will be seen that all the slack of the chain f needed to admit of its being coupled and uncoupled corresponds to the diametrical distance through the cylindrical coupling-bar D, and that, when the links are carried to a used position, said coupling-bar D just fills the circular hook,` and the convex shoulders c e eX- actly iit into and bear against the concave shoulders t t.
Such aconstruction of chain-belt is strong,
conveniently operated, and a very tight tenside bars having concave shoulders at one end.
and convex shoulders at the other end, the former4 shoulders adapted to fit into and bear against the latter, and all having alike radius, said side bars being connected by a cylindrical coupling-bar at one end and by a hook at the other end, forming a cylindrical bearing adapted to receive said coupling-bar, all substantially asset forth.
JOI-IN C. BLOOM.
