Assembly of the presserfoot in accordance with this invention comprises only inserting the spring 26 into the bore 25', placing the lug 23 of the chaining fobt through the aperture 16d in the main sole plate, inserting the assembly between the flanges 15, and finally inserting the screws 17. The resultant device is very rigid, the flanges being in face contact with the outer surfaces of the lugs 19 to hold and guide the main sole plate in pivoting. 7
Numerous alterations of the structure herein disclosed will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art. However, it is to be understood that the present disclosure relates to a preferred embodiment of my invention which is for purposes of illustration only and not to be construed as a limitation of the invention. All such modifications which do not depart from the spirit of the invention are intended to be included within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is: V t
1. A presser foot for a sewing machine comprising a shank adapted to be secured to the presser bar of a sewing machine, a main sole plate, a chainingfoot, common means for separately p'votally mounting said main sole plate and said chaining foot on said shank for pivotal movement of said chaining foot relatively to said main sole plate and said shank and defining a pivot axis, means providing for chaining foot relatively to the pivot axis thereof, and spring means between said chaining foot and said shank for biasing said chaining foot bodily within the. range of bodily movement and thereafter biasingsaid chaining foot pivotally about the pivot axis thereof, and means interconnecting said chaining foot and said main sole plate for pivotally biasing said main. sole plate upon pivotal movement of said chaining foot.
2. A presser foot for a sewing machine comprising a shank adapted to be secured to the presser bar of a sewing machine, spaced depending flanges on said shank, a main sole plate having spaced upstanding lugs disposed between said flanges, a chaining foot having an upstanding lug disposed between the lugs of said main sole plate, pivot means associated with said flanges and said upstanding lugs for pivotally mounting said mains foot on said shank on a:
sole plate and said chaining common pivot axis, and including a lost motion connection with said lug in said chaining foot tojprovide for limited bodily movement of said chaining foot relatively to the pivot axis, spring means between said chaining foot and said shank for biasing said chaining foot relatively to said shank, and means interconnecting said chaining foot and said main sole plate for pivotallybiasing said main sole plate upon pivotal movement of said chaining foot.
3. A presser foot fora sewing machine comprising a shank adapted to be secured to the presser bar of a sewing machine, spaced depending flanges on said shank, a main sole plate having spaced upstanding lugs dislimited bodily movement of said posed between said flanges, a chaining foot having an upstanding lug, said main sole plate having an aperture, said lug on said chaining foot extending loosely through said aperture in said main sole plate and disposed between the lugs of said main sole plate, said lug on said chaining foot having recesses in the opposite faces thereof, axially alined pivot screws threaded through said flanges and having stud ends extending loosely through the lugs on said main sole plate and into said recesses, said recesses being elongated to provide for limited bodily movement of said chaining foot relatively to said pivot screws, spring means disposed between said chaining foot and saidshank for biasing said chaining foot relatively to said shank, and means interconnecting said chaining foot and said main sole plate for pivotally biasing said main sole plate upon pivotal movement of said chaining foot.

In a sewing machine having a throat plate, a feed dog operable through said throat plate to advance the work, and a presser foot'opposed to saidthroat plate and feed dog, said presser foot comprising a shank, spaced depending flanges on said'shank, a main sole plate adapted to lie flat in engagement with said throat plate and feed dog and having spaced upstanding lugs disposed between said flanges, a chaining foot having a chaining sole plate adapted to cooperate with a section of said feed dog and having an upstanding lug, said main sole plate having an aperture, said lug on said chaining foot extending loosely through said aperture in said main sole plate and disposed between the lugs of saidmain sole plate, said lug on said chaining foot having recesses in the opposite faces thereof, axially alined pivot screws threaded through said flanges and having stud ends. extending loosely through the lugs on said main sole'plate and into said recesses, said recesses being elongated to provide for limited bodily movement of said chaining foot relatively to said pivot screws in a direction toward and away from said feed dog, and spring means disposed between said chaining foot and said shank for biasing said chaining foot bodily toward said feed dog within the range of bodily movement of said chaining foot as determined by the elongated recesses and for pivotally biasing said chaining foot when said chaining foot is lifted from the work and said pivot screws are engaged against the end of the elongated recesses, said lug on said chaining foot engaging against the edges of. the aperture in the main sole plate upon pivotal movement of said chaining foot relatively to said main sole plate to connect the same together for unitary pivotal movement.
