DOOR-FASTENR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,162, dated January l, 1354.
' Applimtion filed May 28. 1883. (No model.)
To @ZZ zzz/1,0112, it ntaj/ con/cern:
Be it known that I, OseAR DE MAnvn, of Alexandria, county of Alexandria, and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners; and l. do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to that class of doorfasteners which are specially designed for securing the doors of ice-boxes or other structures where it is desirable to have an airtight joint; and it consists, mainly, in providing a door-casting of ordinary construction with a double-inclined surface upon its bearing-face, which surface is adapted, when the door is closed and secured by the lever-handle, to prevent the latter from accidentally rising out of its normal position and permitting the entrance of air.
It consists, further, in providing the doorca-sting and the l'ever-arm with coincident holes or openings adapted to receive the bow Vof a padlock or other proper locking device,
plate of special construction, as will be de;d
scribed'hereinafter. i
Inthe drawings, Figure l represents aside view of the door-casting, with the lever in cross-section; Fig. 2, a front view of the saine; Fig. 3, a front view of the lever; Fig. 4, a perspective view of the same; Fig. 5, a front view representing the completed fastener in posi tion, and Figs. 6 and 7 views of a modified form of bearing-plate.
To enable others skilled in the art to make my improved fastener, llwill proceed to describe fully the construction of the same.
A represents a lever-handle, having the straight shank portion a and the curved handle portion a', as shown.
a2, Fig. 1, `represents a curved bearing-face upon the shank portion a, and ai a right-an gled projection having an opening, ai, as shown.
a5 also represents an opening for the pivotbolt, hereinafter referred to.
B represents a bearing-plate strongly secured to the casting by screws, as' shown, which is provided with a slot, b, for limiting the movement of the lever-handle, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 5.
C represents the bolt before referred to, extending through the casing, by means of which the lever-handle is strongly pivoted thereto.
D representsa casting, having a base portion, d, adapted to be strongly secured to the door, and arightangled portion, d, adapted for the double purpose of supporting the leA ver-handle in its normal position for securing the door and serving as ahandle, as will be fur; ther described. j
di represents a bearing-surface upon the base portion of the casting, which is provided with a double incline, as shown.
d represents a supporting-surface upon the portion d', upon which the shank of theleverhandle rests whenin its normal position for se; curing the door, as shown in Fig. l.
d* represents an upwardly-extending pro= jection, which is adapted to serve as a conven; ient handle foropening the door.
d5 represents an opening like the opening a* in the lever-handle.
E, Figs. 6 and 7, represents a modified form of bearing-plate, which is provided with a Iiange portion, e, .adapted to bear against the end of the lever, as shown. By means of this construction the strain exerted upon the bolt by the lever is transferred in a great measure to the solid bearing-plate.
The operation is substantially as follows:- When the door is closed and thelever-handle is in its normal position to secure the door, the
'.position of the parts is as shown in Figs. 1
and 5. The shank portion of thelever, it will be observed in Fig. l, rests solidly upon the supporting-surface d of the casting, `and its curved face a2 bears upon the surface of the double incline d2 at a point just below the apex ofthe same. By means of this construction the lever-handle is securely held against an accidental upward movement, the projecting apex serving to hold the same until positive force is used to spring its bearing-face over the apex of the incline. Vhen the parts are in this position, also, theopening a4 in the lever coincides with the opening d5 in the casting, and consequently the bow of a padlock may be passed through them both for the purpose of locking the door when it is desired to do so. The advantages ol' the described construcl and the pivot-bolt C, ihebcaring-plate E, havtion are, first, that the lever-handle, by means of the doubleineline, is positively held against accidental inoveinent, and, second, that eonvenient nieans are afforded for locking the door when desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire lo secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In combination with a pivoted lever-handle, A, substantially as described, attached to the door-easing', a casting, D, substantially as described, haring a su pportingbearing, d, and a bearing, di, with a double incline, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In combination with the casting D, hav ing an inclined l'ieariugj-surfaee, the lever A,
ing the flange portion e, as described, the iange serving to take a portion of the strain exerted upon the pivot-bolt by the lever and inclined bearing-surface upon thc casting'.
3. The fastener described, having thclever A, with bearing a"', right-angled projection a, with opening,` af, the bearing-plate B, the pivot-bolt C, and the casting l), with double incline and opening` d, combined and arranged as and for the purpose described.
This speciiieation signed and witnessed this 28th day of May, 1833.
