Application October 5, 1956, Serial N0. 614,208
1 Claim. (Cl. 29-401) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in plow bottoms of the type comprising a share, including a separate point, and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a novel method of reconditioning the point when the tip thereof becomes worn or damaged.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a replacement tip for plow points which will greatly increase the efliciency of the plow.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a plow point repair or replacement tip of the character described which will be simple in construction, strong, durable and which may be manufactured and applied at low cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a moldboard plow equipped with a removable point embodying a tip comprising the present invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective view, showing the removable point and the replacement tip separated;
Figure 3 is a perspective view, showing the replacement tip applied to the point; and
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view, taken substantially on the line 44 of Figure 3.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that reference character 5 designates generally a plow comprising the usual moldboard 6. The plow 5 further comprises a share 7 which includes a separate blade and point 8 and 9, respectively. The plow 5 further includes a conventional frog (not shown) on which the members 6, 8 and 9 are secured in the usual manner. The attaching means for the removable point 9 includes a bolt 10, said point having an opening 11 therein for the reception of said bolt.
ice
The embodiment of the present invention which has been illustrated comprises a tip or blade 12 of suitable hard metal, preferably high alloy steel. The blade or tip 12 is of substantially the shape and proportions shown to advantage in Figure 1 of the drawing, and said blade comprises a beveled cutting edge 13. The blade or tip 12 is adapted to be welded on the point 9 and toward this end said blade or tip comprises a straight, flat upper edge or face 14.
It is thought that the invention will be readily understood from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, when the original blade or tip of the point 9 becomes worn, said point is removed from the plow. The worn ,blade or tip of the point 9 is then cut off in a manner to provide a substantially straight end or edge 15. The edges 15 and 14 of the point 9 and the blade 12 are then brought into abutting engagement and welded together with the downwardly and forwardly inclined end 16 of said blade 12 flush with the front 17 of said point 9. The replacement blade 12 is considerably larger than the original point blade for increased suction and durability, the rear end portion 18 of said blade 12 projecting rearwardly beneath the forward end portion of the share blade 8. In Figure 4 of the drawing, reference character 19 designates the welded joint between the members 9 and 12.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A method of reconditioning the worn removable points of plows of the type including a separate share, said method comprising cutting olf the worn tip of the point flush with the lower edge of the share and then welding on the lower end of the point a replacement tip of a length to extend rearwardly beyond the point and including a straight, horizontal, fiat upper edge paralleling and abutting said lower edge of said share.
