Description
1951 M. PIGET ADJUSTABLE HINGES Filed June 1, 1959 INVENTOR M. PIGET ATTORNEY 2,990,568 ADJUSTABLE I-IINGES Maurice Piget, 7 rue Raymond Greban, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France Filed June 1, 1959, Ser. No. 817,300 Claims priority, application France Apr. 17, 1959 4 Claims. (Cl. 16-128) This invention relates to adjustable pin-type hinges.
The hanging of a door or window is generally done at the building site, and requires several time-consuming trials for the correct setting of the hinge.
It is the principal object of this invention to provide a hinge of the pin type with means to compensate for dimensional variations so as to facilitate mounting operations.
The hinge in accordance with the illustrated embodiment of this invention comprises two hollow cylindrical sheaths: a male sheath having a pin theron, and a female sheath. Each sheath is provided with a longitudinal slot for a fastener assembly. The fastener assembly is made of two parts, at least one of these being provided with a flange. In the case of flush-mounted doors a single flange fits into a groove located in the frame or in the door. In the case of an overlapping door, the two parts of the fastener assembly are smaller and symmetrical, both being provided with a flange. The sheath rests on a sole or plate, the fastening assembly fitting into a slot provided in the plate. The fastener assembly being fixed, and the sheath being slidingly mounted on the fastener assembly, the adjustment to obtain the correct setting is accomplished by hammering the sheath so that it slides up or down with respect to the fastener assembly until it is in the correct position and locking the sheath by means of a locking screw or peg which spreads apart the two parts of the fastener assembly. A metal ring, preferably made of bronze is placed around the pin between the two sheaths.
Other and incidental objects of this invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from a reading of this specification and an inspection of the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is a view in perspective showing the sheath with the pin mounted thereon;
FIGURES 2 and 3 show an auxiliary mounting plate and a fastener for overlapping doors; and
FIGURE 4 is a cross-sectional drawing of a hinge assembly for overlapping doors.
Referring now to FIGURE 1, there is shown a cylindrical sheath 1 provided with a longitudinal slot 2 and two apertures 3, positioned opposite the slot 2 and designed to receive locking pins 14. The male sheath is provided with a pin 8 which fits into a female sheath not provided with pin 8.
FIGURE 2 is a perspective drawing of an auxiliary States Patent mounting plate or sole 10 used for overlapping doors. The cylindrical sheath 1 rests on the mounting plate 10 which is provided with a slot 11 for a fastener assembly such as that shown in FIGURE 3. The plate 10 is also provided with screw apertures 12.
FIGURE 3 shows a fastener assembly provided with a pair of flanges 13. The fastener assembly comprises two sections forming a cylindrical head 5 and a slot 6.
FIGURE 4 is a cross-sectional view showing the hinge on an overlapping door. The screws fastening the hinge to the door 17 and the frame 18 are not shown. The locking screw 14 spreads apart the two portions forming the cylindrical head of the fastener assembly and by tearing the metals locks the fastener against the walls of the sheath.
The pin-type hinge in accordance with this invention leaves an opening at each end which may be used for purposes of lubrication without having to take the hinge apart. These openings may be closed by means of a suitable cap.
Iclaim:
1. A hinge comprising two hollow sheaths each provided with a longitudinal slot, one of said sheaths being provided with a pin which extends longitudinally therefrom and into said other sheath, and a fastener assembly for each of said sheaths, each fastener assembly comprising two parallel plates fitting into said slot and each terminated by heads slidingly fitted into said hollow sheath, at least one of said plates having a mounting flanged thereon, and means to spread said heads apart so as to lock said fastener assembly into said sheath.
2. A hinge comprising two hollow cylindrical sheaths each provided with a longitudinal slot, one of said sheaths being provided with a pin which extends longitudinally therefrom and into said other sheath, and a fastener as sembly for each of said sheaths, each fastener assembly comprising two parallel plates fitting into said slot and each terminated by semi-cylindrical heads slidingly fitted into said hollow sheath, at least one of said plates having a mounting flange thereon, and means to spread said heads apart so as to lock said fastener assembly into said sheath.
3. A hinge according to claim 1 wherein each of said sheaths is provided with apertures designed to receive locking pins.
4. A hinge according to claim 1 wherein both of said plates have a flange thereon.
