UNITED STATES PATENT (DEEICEo ROWLAND EOLGER, oF MILEOED, MASSACHUSETTS.
DIVIDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming partei' Letters Patent No. 297,979l dated May 6, 1884.
Application filed March 1, 1884. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern: /Be it known that I, BOWLAND FOLGEE, of
of Massachusetts, have invented new and use- 5 ful Improvements in Dividers, of which the following is a specification. c
In the accompanying drawings, in which simil ar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure l is a perspective view of a pair of di- Fig. 2 is a` rear elevation of the same.
A and A represent the legs of the dividers, hinged at a and provided with the curved adjusting and retaining bar B, Slotted at b, ad-
l15, justed by means of the thumb-screw d, and
2o ing-bar B and of pivoting it to the leg A'at a point so near the joint a are, first, to enable the said adj usting-bar to be out of the way by sliding near the joint 'a `when the dividers are spread, especially between the angles of fortyf 25 ve and ninety degrees, thus facilitating Jthe use of the same in connection with uneven surfaces, corners, &c.; and, second, by means of the thumb-screw d, placed relatively low on the leg A, and extending through the slot b,
3C to enable the lower end of said adjusting device, which is squared, (see B,) to move over and substantially on a line with the degreescale A, so that the angle of the legs is always indicated by the degree in the scale next The outer surfaces of the legsare scaled for inches, the combined length of the two, when spread So as to be on a line, being Each of the legs is preferably an exact foot. hollow or tubular, and is provided with alon- 40 gitudin'al slot, C, a sliding cup or socket, D,
and a thumbscrew or set-screw, E, secured to said socket, by means of which the latter is held in any position in the leg and prevented from dropping out of the same and becoming mislaid." Ihese sockets areV adapted to hold ypointers f, pencils g, crayons, lining-pens, brushes, Snc., as desired. When pencils g or sides as they lie in the legs, so that the points are on the inner sides thereof, and when the legs are placed together the two points above named will nearly touch, the advantage of which is apparent to any draftsman. 'Ihe lower ends, A", of the legs are tapered, as
shown, to facilitate thisresult.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, vand desire to secure by Letters l. In combination with the legs A and A of a pair of dividers, the curved slotted retaining or adjusting bar B, pivoted at one end to the leg A relatively near the joint, and adj ustably secured by means of its slot to the leg A at a greater distance from the joint, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.-
2. rlhe combination of the leg A', the ad.- j usting or retaining bar B, pivoted atethere to, and the leg A, provided with the adj ustingscrew d and the degree-scale A", substantially as and for the purpose described.
ROWLAND EOLGER.
