(Cl. 26S- 118) The present invention relates to a regulator mechanism for a pivoted type window. While of general applicability, the present invention is embodied for illustrative purposes in a regulator mechanism for pivoted type vent windows used on vehicles.
In the past it has been common to open such windows by means of a latch which is unfastened and thereafter used as a handle for simply pushing the window to an open position. This type of mechanism, however, requires that the person opening suchwindow extend his hand outside of the vehicle compartment. Another common expediency for opening such windows has been the use of crank members which have been combined with gear elements whereby rotation of the crank will cause an opening of the window.
The present invention relates to a relatively simple lever mechanism whereby a handle may project slightly within the vehicle compartment proximate the pivoted window in such a way that the window may be opened or closed by convenient fore and aft movement of the lever substantially in the plane of the door. Thus a person desiring to open such a window may merely grasp the handle with his hand and pull the same rearwardly to open the window or push the same to close the window.
The present unique window operating lever system is so constructed and arranged that the fore and aft movement of the operating handle will not cause the handle to move outwardly or inwardly relative to the door. In this way the window operating lever may be inconspicuously though conveniently located with regard to vehicle passengers facilitating easy control of the pivoted window.
The details as well as other objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from a perusal of the detailed description which follows.

The present invention has been illustrated with a pivoted type window indicated generally at l0 and mounted on a door 12. A conventional vertically operating window is shown generally at 14 and constitutes no part of the present invention. Pivoted window is mounted within a channel member 16 to. which a generally vertically extending operating rod 1S is xed. Rod 18 is disposed generally within the plane of window 10.
Window operating rod 18 is articulated to an actuating mechanism indicated generally at 29.
Mechanism 20 includes a casing member 22 having ilange portions 24 and 26 through which the mechanism is mounted to supporting structure 23 through screw member 30.
An interior door panel 32 includes a longitudinally extending slotted opening 34 disposed proximate window operating mechanism 20. A slotted member 36 is rotatably mounted in an opening 38 formed in the upper side of casing 22 and includes a shaft portion 40 projecting within the casing. A lever 42 is iixed to shaft 40 thereto. Window operating rod 18 includes an end portion 44 adapted to project within the slotted member 36 and be articulated thereto through a pin member 46.
The free end of lever 42 includes a link 48 articulated thereto. The other end of link 48 is articulated through a common pin 50 to one end of a lever 52 and also to the operating arm 56.
The other end of lever 52 includes a pin member 58 slidably disposed within a slot 6@ formed in casing 22. Lever 52 is also articulated intermediate its ends to a link 62 the other end of which is pivotally connected to a pin 64 fixed to casing 22.
As best seen in Figure 2, the inner or pivoted end of operating arm 56 is bifurcated so that legs 66 and 68 thereof are adapted to straddle the adjacent end of lever 52. Arm S6 is adapted to rotate about pivot 50 relative to lever 52. Also loosely mounted on pivot 50 is a lever 7d including a notch 72 adapted to be moved into or out of locking engagement with a locking abutment member 74. Notch '72 and abutment member 74 provide a locking mechanism when the window is partially opened.
As seen in Figure 2, a spring member is connected between lever 70 and operating lever 52 whereby the former is biased in a clockwise direction so as to abut against stop 74.
The operation of the subject mechanism is as follows: with the pivoted window in a closed position as shown in Figures l through 4, spring Sil maintains abutment 77 of lever 70 in engagement with lever arm 56, thereafter operating arm 56 may be moved, as best seen in Figure 4, from left to right. This movement will cause operating arm 56 initially to rotate about pivot 5t) and engage with lever abutment or stop 78. This initial rotative movement will rotate lever 7) in a counterclockwise direction moving notch 72 out of potential locking engagementwith abutment 74. Continued rightward or rearward movement of operating arm 56 will cause lever 52 to rotate about its pivot 5S and in so doing cause link 4S to impart a counterclockwise rotation to lever 42 which in turn imparts a similar rotation to shaft 40 of slotted member 36. Rotation of member S16-rotates operating rod 1S and consequently opens window lil. The degree of window opening is, of course, determined by the amount of rightward or rearward travel of the operating arm 56.
In order to insure that the movement of operating arm 56 is in substantially the same plane and does not extend to a greater or lesser degree within the vehicle compartment, it will be seen as lever 52 is rotated about pivot pin 5S, link 62 will rotate about xed pivot 64 causing the lever and pin to be translated and move upwardly within slot 6th. Thus the translatory movement of lever 52 during its rotation about its pivot pin 58 insures that the travel of common pin 50 will be substantially linear thereby maintaining the operating arm at a substantially constant distance relative to inner door wall 32.
As best seen in Figmre 5, if it is desired to lock window 1t? in a partially opened position, operating arm 56 may be rotated in a clockwise direction permitting spring 80 to rotate arm 70 and position notch 72 for engagement with abutment stop 74 preventing further opening movement until arm S6 is`again rotated to move the notch out of engagement With the abutment member.
Due to the overcenter construction of the various links and levers, mechanism 2t? automatically locks window in a closed position when arm 56 is moved to its leftmost or forwardmost position indicated in Figure 4.
We claim:
l. Anoperating mechanism for a pivoted type window, a common supporting member for the mechanism and the window, a shaft rotatably mounting said Window on said supporting member, said mechanism being connected to said shaft and including an actuating lever disposed in a plane substantially perpendicularly disposed to the plane of the window, said mechanism also including a pin and slot device, said lever being operatively connected to and pivotal about said pin, an arm pivotally connected to said lever for moving the latter, and means for moving said pin in said slot when the lever is pivoted about said pin whereby the movement of said arm is substantially linear.
2. An operating mechanism for a pivoted type window, a common supporting member for the mechanism and the Window, a shaft rotatably mounting said Window on said supporting member, said shaft being disposed substantially in the plane of the window, said mechanism being connected to said shaft, and including an actuating lever disposed in a plane substantially perpendicularly disposed to the plane of the window, said mechanism also including a pin and slot device, said lever being operatively connected to and piovtal about said pin, an arm pivotally connected to said lever for moving the latter, means for moving said pin in said slot when the lever is pivoted about said pin whereby the window-opening movement of said arm is substantially linear, and means for locking said Window in a partially open position.
3. An operating mechanism for a pivoted type window as set forth in claim 2 in which said Window locking means comprises a second lever pivotally supported on said actuating lever, a iixed stop, said second lever being engageable with the stop to prevent opening movement of the actuating lever.

An operating mechanism for a pivoted type window as set forth in claim 3 in which the actuating lever includes a pair of spaced abutments to limit pivotal movement of said arm relative to the actuating lever, said arm adapted to engage one of the abutments to move said actuating lever to open the Window and to engage the other abutment to move the actuating lever to close the window.
5. An operating mechanism for a pivoted type window as set forth in claim 4 in which the` locking means including` a spring element normally biasing said arm into engagement with said other abutment.
6. An operating mechanism for a pivoted type Window comprising an operating rod operatively connected to the Window and disposed generally in the plane thereof, a supporting structure adapted to support said window and said operating rod, and a mechanism operatively connected to said rod for imparting rotation thereto, said mechanism comprising a casing member xed to said supporting structure, a shaft member rotatably supported in said casing member and operatively connected to said rod, a iirst lever xed at one end to said shaft, a second lever including a pivot at one end disposed within a slot formed in said casing, a link articulated respectively to the other ends of said first 'and second levers, an operating arm articulated at the point of connection of said second lever and said link, said operating arm` being adapted to move in a plane generally normal tothe plane of said window, zand a second link articulated at one end to said second lever intermediate its ends, said second link being pivotally supported at its other end upon a pivot fixed on said casing whereby rotation of the second link about its fixed pivot will cause the second lever pivot -to slide within the slot permitting the window-opening movement of said operating arm to be linear.

8. An operating mechanism for a pivoted type window comprising an operating rod operatively connected to the window and disposed generally in the plane thereof, a
supporting structure adapted to support said window and said operating rod, and a mechanism operatively connected to said rod for imparting rotation thereto, said mechanism comprising a casing member iixed to said supporting structure, a shaft member rotatably supported in said casing member and operatively connected to said rod, a first lever fixed at one end to said shaft, a second lever including a pivot at one end disposed within a slot formed in said casing, a link articulated respectively to the other ends of said iirst and second levers, an operating arm articulated at the point of connection of said second lever and said link, said operating arm being disposed in and adapted tol move in a plane generally normal to the plane of said Window, said second lever including a pair of spaced stop members adapted to limit the rotation of said arm relative to said second lever, a second link articulated at one end toT said second lever intermediate its ends, said second link being piovtally supported at its other end upon a xed pivot mounted on said casing, movement of said operating arm in said plane pivoting said second lever about its pivotal connection imparting movement to said irst link and said first lever to rotate said shaft which in turn rotates said operating rod and said window, rotation of said second lever causing said second link to rotate about its lixed pivot and in so doing causing said second lever pivot point to move within said slot and translate said lever relative to said casing whereby the point of articulation between said first link and said second lever and said operating arm'travels in a substantially linear path, and means associated with said operating arm adapted to lock said Window in a partially open position when said arm engages one of said lever stop members.
. 9. An operating mechanism for a pivoted type window as set forth in claim 8 in which said locking means includes a spring element normally biasing said arm in engagement with said one stop member.
