2 Claims. (Cl. 2016) The present invention relates to door locks and particularly to door locks which include weather stripping for providing a seal between the door lock and the adjacent portions of a door jamb in which the associated door is mounted.
Although the use of weather strip-ping between the edges of a door and the associated door jamb to provide a seal around the edges of the door is well known, a perplexing problem has been the leakage of air between the door jamb and that portion of the edge of the door in which the door lock is mounted. This problem is particularly acute with metal doors and door frames since considerable clearance must be designed into such closures to prevent the door from becoming wedged in the doorway as a result of temperature changes which may cause a considerable amount of expansion of the metal members from which the door is constructed. While the lock bolt itself may provide a partial seal in this area while the door is locked, in most instances the doors are unlocked for long periods of time, and therefore, the lock bolt is completely ineffective as a seal during these extended intervals.
Therefore, a principal object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved sealing means for use in connection with a door lock assembly.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved weather stripping arrangement for use with door locks which are adapted to be mounted in the edges of doors.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved door lock assembly including weather stripping to provide a complete seal between the face plate of the door lock assembly and the adjoining structure when the door is in a closed position, irrespective of whether the door is locked.
Briefly, the above and further objects are realized in accordance with the present invention by providing a door lock assembly including a sealing means which is secured thereto and which protrudes a substantial distance from the face plate of the door lock throughout the length thereof. Since this sealing means is uninterrupted by the aperture in the face plate through which the lock bolt is movable, it may operatively connect with suitable weather stripping mounted in the remaining edge portions of the door and thus enable the provision of a complete and uninterrupted seal between a door jamb or the like and the edge of an associated door in which the lock is mounted.
The invention, both as to its organization and method of operation, together with further objects and advantages thereof, will best be understood by reference to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the edge of a door in which a lock plate embodying the present invention is mounted;
Fig. 2 is a substantially sectional view taken along the line 22 of Fig. 1 showing, in phantom, a fragmentary portion of the bolt in a locked position;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, assuming the entire structure to be shown therein; and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of another embodiment of the invention.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a door lock assembly 10 which is mounted in a suitable aperture in the edge 11 of a door 12. The lock 10 comprises as its principal components a housing channel 14, a lock bolt 16 pivotally mounted in the channel 14, a cylinder 17 for moving the bolt 16 through an aperture in the web of the channel 14, and an apertured face plate 18 which lies flush with the edge of the door in which the lock 10 is mounted. In the door lock which is used to describe the present invention, the lock bolt 16, which is laminated, is pivotally mounted for movement into extended and retracted positions, but it will be understood that the invention is also suited for use with reciprocably movable lock bolts or with any other similar arrangements.
In accordance with an important feature of the present invention, a weather strip 22 is secured to the lock 10 throughout the length thereof. The weather strip 22 preferably comprises a resilient portion 23 formed of mohair which is woven in a cloth backing 24. A rigid backing strip 25, which, as shown in Fig. 3, is L-shaped in plan, is fastened to one side of the channel 14, and the backing 24 is bonded to the strip 25 so that the mohair 23 protrudes a substantial distance from the face plate 18. Accordingly, with the door 12 in a closed position, the mohair 23 engages the adjacent door jamb or other structure to provide a continuous seal throughout the length of the lock 10.
Considered in greater detail, the strip 25 is secured to the side flange of the channel 14 by means of a plurality of suitable screws or drive pins 26. Since the weather strip 22 is thus located along one side of the lock 10, it may be continuous throughout the length of the lock 10 without interfering with the operation of the bolt 16. Moreover, inasmuch as the channel 14 is the principal supporting member in the lock 10, it is necessarily quite heavy and strong, and therefore, it provides a particularly good mounting member for the weather strip 22.
Although the mode of assembly of the door lock 10 in the door 12 should be clear from the above description, in order to point out the ease of assembly of this construction, a brief description will be given. With the face plate 18 and the cylinder 17 disassembled from the channel 14, the weather strip 22 is secured to the channel 14, and the channel 14 is then inserted into an aperture 29 in the edge of the door 12 until a circular aperture 31 which extends through the sides of the channel member 14 is aligned with similar apertures in the sides or faces of the door 12. The cylinder 17 is then inserted through the face of the door stile into the door lock assembly and secured thereto by means of a set screw 32. Thereafter, the face plate 18 is fitted into the hole 29 and is secured to the web portion of the channel 14 by means of a plurality of countersunk screws 36.
As best shown in Fig. 3, the edge 11 of the door 12 is arcuate in plan and the face of the face plate 18 follows this curvature so that the face plate 18 lies flush with the edge of the door in the completed assembly. Also, the bolt 16, when in a retracted position as shown in the drawing, presents an arcuate surface of this same radius so as to provide a relatively'smooth edge surface on the door. Preferably, a set of weather stripping members 38 are mounted in the center of the door edge above and below the lock 10 so that the sealing member 22, in cooperation with the members 38, may thus provide a substantially continuous weather strip extending throughout the full length of the door 12, this seal being uninterrupted at the location of the aperture 15 through which the bolt 16 is movable.
Where desired, and as shown in Fig. 4, the sealing member 22 may be wrapped partially around the ends of the door lock assembly 10 so as to engage the sealing members 38 in the edge of the door proper. Also, where improved sealing is necessary, a similar Weather stripping means 22 may be provided on the opposite side of the lock assembly.
It may thus be seen that the present invention provides a weather stripping arrangement extending throughout the full length of the face plate of a door lock so as to enable the weather-stripping of a door without interruption in the vicinity of the lock bolt.
While the present invention has been described in connection with particular embodiments thereof, it will be understood that those skilled 'in the art may make many changes and modifications without departing from the true spirit and scope of this invention as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed as new and is desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A door lock of the type which is adapted to be mounted in the edge portion of a door, comprising a housing including a face plate and a set of side plates, said side plates lying substantially perpendicular to said face plate, a retractable bolt mounted for movement through an aperture in said face plate, a weather stripping member including a backing portion and a resilient jamb engaging portion, and means for fastening the backing portion of said weather stripping member to one of said side plates throughout the length of said door lock with said resilient jarnb engaging portion extending a substantial distance beyond said face plate.
2. A door lock asset forth in claim 1 wherein part of said backing portion lies substantially flush with the face of said face plate.
