1 Claim. (Cl. 229-34) The present invention relates to paperboard berry boxes, and more particularly to such boxes which are reinforced to equal or surpass the strength of prior art wooden berry boxes.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a paperboard berry box having its upper edge reinforced to withstand horizontal and vertical pressures applied thereto.
Another object of the invention is to provide a berry box having the above characteristics which is formed from a single folded blank.
A further object of the invention is to provide a paperboard berry box which is inexpensive to manufacture, simple to use and fill, and which will withstand exceedingly hard usage without becoming damaged thereby or permitting the contents thereof to be spilled or damaged. a
Uni d Sta es; Paten 70 7 c and each include'upwardly and outwardly tapering side A further object of the invention is to provide'a paper board berry box with a rim'of suflicient strengthto' withstand pressure as generated in the process of heat sealing a transparent film to the outer inclined area of'the box rim, to form a transparent cover over the box contents.
Other objects and advantages will. become apparent inthe following specification when COI1Sid616d in the light of the attached drawings, in which; I
Figurel is a perspective view of the invention. V
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical crosssection taken along'the line 22 of Figure 1 looking section taken along the line 6--6 of Figure 5, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures/the reference numeral 10 indicates generally a berry box constructed tion.. V ,7
The box 10 isillustrated in Figure 1 in' erected position with the blank from which it is formed being shown parallel opposite side edges 14 and 15 extending perpendicularly therebetween.
to the bottom wall 11 and a side wall 19 identical to the side wall 18 is integrally joined at 15 .to the bottom wall 11;
The side walls 18 and 19 are'of identical construction The box 10 includes a bottom-wall 11 I having parallel opposite side edges 12 and 13 joined by thereto in overlying relation.
serte'd between the reinforcing panels 24 and their ad 7 'jacent panels 22 and are glued to'the inner face of the in accordancewith the invenupper edge of the box 10.
edges 20', 21! The side walls 18 and 19 each have an' outwardly sloping upper end panel 22 integrally joined theretoalong a fold line 23. A reinforcing panel 24 is integrally joined to the panel 22 along a-fold line 25.
Flaps'26 are integrally joined to the reinforcingpanels 24 along a fold line 27 and has an elongated glue tab 28 secured thereto along a fold line 29. The fold lines -14, 15; 23, 25, 27 and 29 are all parallel to each other,
asbest illustrated in Figure 3. r t
The side walls 16 and 17 are identical to each other and have outwardly and upwardly sloping tabs 30, 31 integrally secured to the opposite side edges thereof along fold lines 32, 33, respectively. The side walls 16 and 17 are provided with outwardly sloping panels 34 provided with oppositely extending corner tabs 40, 41. 7 An elongated mounting tab 42 is integrally joined to the panels 36 along a fold line 43 and has an elongated glue tab 44 joined to the opposite edge thereof along a fold line 45. The fold lines 12, 13, 35, 37, 43 and 45 are all parallel to each other as seen in Figure 3.
The corner tabs 40', 41 are curved at 46 to facilitate the formation of the corner construction in assembling the berry box. A plurality of ventilating perforations 47 are arranged along the fold'lines 32,33, for reasons to' be assigned.
Theberry box 10 iserected by folding the side walls '16, 17, 18 and 19 to a generally upright outwardly sloping posit-ion with the reinforcing'panels 24, 36v folded downwardly at an angle thereto, as best illustrated in Figure 2, so thatthe gluefiaps 28, 44 canfbe secured to the box 10 withthe flaps-26, 42'extending horizontally locking the reinforcing panels 24, 36 in position.
The flaps 30, 3-1 are bent at right angles to the side walls 16, 17 and have the side walls 18 and 19 glued The tab-s 40, 41 are in reinforcing panels 24.
The tabs 28, 39 are engaged against and glued to the opposite ends of the panels 22, as best illustrated in Figure 6.
In erecting the box 10, the upper portions of each of the walls 16, 17, 18 and 19 are completely formed before the adjacent walls are joined and the arcuate corner 46 7 of the tabs 40, 41 permit the tabs 40, 41 to be swung into final position without binding.
As will be noted from Figure 2 in the drawings, the panels 22, 34 are arranged at a slightly divergent angle to the'side walls 16, 17,18 and 19 adding strength to the Having thus described the preferred embodiment ofthe invention, it should be understood that numerous structural modifications and adaptations may be resorted to without departingfr-om the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is: I a
A paperboard-berry box comprising an integral blank having a rectangular bottom panel, aplurality of side panels integrally joined to said bottom panel and ex-' tendingupwardly therefrom, meansextending between t and connecting adjacent edges of the adjacent side panels, V
a reinforcing panel integrally joined to the upper edge of each of said side panels and lying ina flat plane extending upwardly andoutwardly at'an angle from the Hat plane of said side panels, a second reinforcing panel integrally joined to the upperedge of each of said first panels. and extending downwardly and outwardly therefrom, said second reinforcing panel having the same height as said first reinforcing panel, a third reinforcing panel integrally joined to the lower edge of each of said second panels and extending. horizontally therefrom to- Ward. the upper edges of said side panels, and an. elongatedglue tab integrally formed on and depending perpiendicw larly from the side of each: of said third reinforcing panels adjacent said side panels, eaclt of said tabs engaging against. and being fixedly secured to a respective one of, said side panels closely adjacent the. upper edge thereof, means securing said reinforcing panels to ad-- jacent; reinforcing panels at the corners of saidboxsaid first, second and third reinforcing panels forming subs-r stantially' an isosceles triangle in cross-section, whereby vertical pressure applied on the top 'edges'of said box will be evenly distributed between said first and second reinforcing panels.
