Claims. (Cl. 77-62) This invention pertains to a workpiece supporting block, and more particularly to a V type block adapted for immovably securing elongated workpieces of relatively small dimension to permit milling or boring operations thereon.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a novel workpiece supporting V block construction together with means for immovably securing the workpiece thereon.
It is the further object of this invention to provide a drill guide means in conjunction with said block for accurately locating the drill with respect to the longitudinal axis of the workpiece.
It is the further object of the present invention to provide, drill guide means in conjunction with said V block, which is adjustable longitudinally of the block and which is adapted to interchangeably receive drill guide bushings of different internal diameter.
These and other objects will be seen from the following specification and claims in conjunction with the appended drawings in which:

It will be understood that the above drawings illustrate merely a preferred embodiment of the invention, and that other embodiments are contemplated within the scope of the claims hereafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings, the present V block includes the squared upright parallel rectangularly shaped end walls 11 and 12, and intermediate said walls the upright body portion 13. Said body has an upright front wall 14 adjacent thereto and intermediate end walls 11 and 12, is the central transverse bridge wall 20 longitudinally slotted at 21. Body 13 has an upright rear wall 15, which terminates at its upper end in the inwardly and upwardly curved portion 16, which terminates in the elongated workpiece receiving V notch 19 shown in Fig. 9, said body being vertically slotted at 10.
There is also formed within the top surface of end walls 11 and 12 a pair of corresponding V notches 17 and 18 in longitudinal alignment and with the lower portions thereof in alignment with V notch 19 of body 13 to thereby provide an effective workpiece support for an elongated workpiece, such as the cylindrical rod W shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 9.
Formed in the upright rear edge of each of the end walls 11 and 12 are a series of longitudinally aligned 2,822,710 Patented Feb. 11, 1958 ice vertically arranged undercut upwardly inclined anchor pin receiving slots 22.
Said slots are adapted to cooperativelyreceive the reduced cylindrical ends 23 of the anchor pin 24 to which is secured one end of the flexible metallic workpiece holddown strap 25.
As viewedin Fig. 9, said strap is looped around pin 24 at 26 and the free end thereof riveted as at 27, for effectively securing said strap to anchor pin '24.
The strap 25 extends upwardly over a portion ofthe body surface 16, over preferably the central-portion of workpiece W and downwardly upon the opposite side of body 13 for securing inthe manner hereafter described.
The strap 25, which has a rectangular slot 31 formed therein intermediate its ends to permit additionalaccess to the workpiece, has formed at its outer end a reduced portion 28, which is looped around the transverse pin 32 and riveted to the body of the extension 28 as at 30. Pin 32 extends throughthe bifurcations 33, which project from the upper end of-the securing screw 34, the lower end of which loosely depends through slot 21 and is adapted to receive the locking nut 35.
By this structure it is apparent that a suitable socket wrench may be employed for tightening nut 35, placing the strap 35 under tension so as'to retainingly secure workpiece W within notches 17, 18 and 19.
Depending upon the diameter of the workpiece and upon loosening of nut 35, the pin 24 may be transferred to the desired undercut slot 22, after which nut 35 is again tightened for; securing the workpiece in position.
The present V block, therefore, is particularly adapted for securing theworkpiece W immovablyduring a milling or boring operation, or during drilling or grinding.
It is contemplated furthermore that all of the walls and sides of the block are perfectly square, so that the block may be used upon eitherof itsfront or rear sides, if desired, or'in the position shown in Fig. 1.
To improve upon the present V block-and to provide an accurate guide for the boring tool, there is provided a suitable centering plate 37 'which is transverselyapertured' adjacent 'its four corners to r'etainingly'receive the formed in the-top surface of end walls ll and 12.
Said plate 'has'a centered-. .elongated 's'l'otf38, whose axis' is in vertical alignment with the apex of the V notches 17, 18 and 19, so as 'to assure that during a drilling operation the holes drilled will be through the axis of the workpiece.
There is provided upon the undersurface of plate 37 an elongated undercut slot 39, within which is slidably positioned enlarged head 41 of the bushing guide 40. Said bushing guide is slidably positioned within slot 38 and is secured in the desired position of longitudinal adjustment by the nut 43 upon the top of plate 39, which engages the threaded end 42 of said bushing guide, it being contemplated that a suitable lock washer may be employed, if desired.
The guide bushing 40 has a transverse bore adapted to cooperatively and interchangeably receive the drill guide bushing 44, which may be of varying internal diameters corresponding to the diameter of boring tool employed during a drilling operation.
In the event that the diameter of the workpiece W is such that a portion of the workpiece extends above the top of end walls 11 and 12, then there will be employed spacing washers 36, all of the same height, mounted upon the dowel pins 35' above said end walls and below the centering plate 37.
Heretofore in workpiece supporting V blocks there has always been the objection of too much obstruction upon the top and sides of the block due to the shape of the hold-down clamp employed.
The present invention has for one of its primary pur- .poses the elimination of such objection and permitting increased access, workability and greater safety. I
Another objection heretofore encountered was the marring of the workpiece by the clamp. It will be noted in the present invention that the workpiece engaging band contacts the work over a portion of its area rather than at a point, so that the work is not marred.
Having described my invention, reference should now be had to the claims which follow for determining the scope thereof.
I claim:
'1. A V block comprising a pair of parallel spaced upright end walls with aligned transverse V-shaped grooves formed in the top surfaces thereof to receive an elongated workpiece, a central interconnecting upright body joined to said end walls and having an elongated V-shaped groove therein aligned with said first grooves to receive said workpiece, means for securing said workpiece in said V grooves, a centering plate secured upon and bridging the top surfaces of said end walls, there being an elongated slot formed through said centering plate with its central axis in vertical alignment with the apexes of said V-shaped grooves, and a drill guide bushing adjustably positioned through said centering plate.
2. The V block of claim 1, there being upright slots formed in the upper portions of said end walls, and corresponding upright dowel pins secured to said centering plate and depending therefrom for positioning within said end wall slots.
3. The V block of claim 1, there being upright slots formed in the upper portions of said end walls, corresponding upright dowel pins secured to said centering plate and depending therefrom for positioning within said end wall slots, and spacers on each dowel pin interposed between said end walls and centering plate.
4. A V block comprising a pair of parallel spaced upright end walls with aligned transverse V-shaped grooves formed in the top surfaces thereof to receive an elongated workpiece, a central interconnecting upright body joined to said end walls and having an elongated V-shaped groove therein aligned with said first grooves to receive said workpiece, means for securing said workpiece in said V grooves, a centering plate secured upon and bridging the top surfaces of said end walls, there being an elongated slot formed through said centering plate with its central axis in vertical alignment with the apexes of said V-shaped grooves, said centering plate having an undercut elongated slot formed therein with its centerline vertically aligned with said apexes, a bushing guide slidably positioned within said centering plate slots, means for securing said guide in longitudinally adjusted position, and a drill guide bushing removably and interchangeably inserted within said bushing guide.
5. A V-block comprising 'apair of parallel spaced upright end walls with aligned transverse V-shaped grooves formed in the top surfaces thereof to receive an elongated workpiece, a central interconnecting upright body joined to said end walls and having an elongated V-shaped groove therein alignedtwith said first grooves to receive said workpiece, a horizontally disposed anchor plate interconnecting said end walls forwardly of said body, there being a pair of longitudinally aligned undercut slots formed in the rear edges of said end walls, an anchor pin with its ends nested within said latter slots, at flexible strap secured at one end to said pin extending over said body adapted to retainingly engage said workpiece, and adjustable means on the free end of said strap interconnected with said anchor plate for tightly drawing up said strap, said anchor plate being longitudinally slotted, said adjustable means including an upright bolt extending through the slot in said anchor plate adapted for vertical and longitudinal adjustments therein, a bifurcated head on said bolt, the forward end of said strap having a loop formed therein positioned within said bifurcation, a pin extending through said loop and said bifurcated head, and a .nut threaded on said bolt and cooperable with the undersurface of said anchor plate, there being a series of longitudinally aligned vertically spaced additional pairs of undercut slots formed in the rear edges of said end walls within which the ends of said anchor pin may be selectively positioned, said undercut slots extending angularly upward and forward, all of the slots in each wall being parallel, whereby said anchor pin is adapted for vertical adjustments on said block and said strap is adapted for horizontal sliding adjustments between said end walls over the length of said pin and anchor plate.
