FULLER DEVICE Frederick Nenmeister, in, Indianapolis, Ind. Application May 16, 1955, Serial No. 508,835 1 Claim. (Cl. 29-258) (Granted under Title 35, U. S. Code (1952), sec. 266) The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government of the United States of America for governmental purposes without the payment of any royalties thereon or therefor.
This invention relates to mechanical pullers and more particularly to separable puller devices for pulling electronic equipment from protective containers in which said electronic equipment is cemented. While many puller devices are known for pulling various elements apart, these pullers are all used in their assembled condition and must be attached to the elements which they are pulling apart while in the assembled condition.
In the present invention the puller device is separable so that the puller head may be detachably fixed to an element to be removed from a container, or the like. After the puller head is attached to the element to be pulled, it can be reassembled with the remainder of the puller device for the pulling operation. It is therefore a general object of this invention to provide a separable puller device for attachment to an element to be pulled prior to the assembly of the device for the pulling operation.
These and other objects, advantages, features, and uses will become more apparent as the description proceeds when considered with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a side elevational view of the assembled puller device with parts thereof shown broken away to disclose structural details;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken along the line 2-2 and looking in the direction of the arrows showing the inner wall detail of the puller yoke; and
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the puller head assembly.
Referring more particularly to Fig. 1, there is shown the assembled puller device in which a U-shaped or yoke member is composed of a pair of side plates 11 and 12 held in parallel depending relation from a top plate 13 by cap screws 14. Substantially centrally through the top plate 13 is threaded a threaded shaft 15 having a reduced diameter portion 16 on the lower end thereof and a transverse opening 17 on the upper end thereof to accommodate a handle member 18. Slidable between the two side elements 11 and 12 is a puller head assembly 20 rotatably journaled on the reduced portion 16 of the threaded shaft 15 by the shoulders 21 lying in the reduced portion 16 as will hereinafter be more specifically described with reference to Fig. 3. The puller head assembly has openings therethrough through which cap screws 22 may extend for attachment to electronic equipment or other elements shown in phantom at 23.
Referring more particularly to Fig. 2, the inner surface of each side member, side member 11 being shown, has a channel 25 extending vertically thereof with a horizontal channel 26 connecting the lower end of channel 25 with the exterior. The side member 12 has corresponding channels 25 and 26 therein, the channel 26 of both members 11 and 12 being oriented in the same direction.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 3, the puller head assembly 20 has laterally opposed pin projections 27 for slidable movement through the channels 25 and of the side members ii and 12. The shoulder portions 21 form the sides of a blind channel to permit the reduced diameter portion 16 of the threaded stem 15 to slide through for detachment of the puller head assembly 26 from the threaded stem A leg portion or projection 28 is shown in each of the corners of the puller head assembly Zil for engagement with the electronic or other equipment to be pulled. While the puller head assembly 2t) is shown herein as having four projections and openings therethrough for the insertion of cap screws 22, it is to be understood that any number of openings and various contours on the underside of the puller head assembly may be used where desirable to match the surface of the elements to be pulled. In preparation for the pulling operation, the threaded shaft 15 may be turned to its lowermost position at which time the puller head 29 assembly 29 may be withdrawn from the yoke 1t) and the shaft 15 by reason of the channels 26 and the blind shouldered channel 21. The puller head assembly can then be attached to the element to be pulled and the puller head assembly again slid into place in the yoke iii and on the shaft 15. The pulling operation may then proceed, the puller head assembly 20 being restricted to longitudinal movement by the channels 25.
The figures shown herein are illustrative of the preferred embodiment of this invention although the puller device may take many forms. For example, multiple channels 25 and 26 with corresponding multiple pin projections 27 may be used in a puller device, where desirable, and likewise a plurality of threaded screws 15 may be used to pull heavy loads.
While many modifications and changes may be made in the constructional details and features of this invention as illustrated, it is to be understood that I desire to be limited only to the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A mechanical puller device comprising; a U-shaped yoke member; a threaded shaft threaded through said yoke member substantially centrally and parallel to the leg portions of said yoke member and having a reduced diameter portion and a head means on the end within said yoke member; an L-shaped channel in the inner wall surface of each leg portion with the base of the L lying near the outer extremity of each leg portion and oriented in the same direction and with the vertical of the L lying longitudinally and substantially centrally of each leg portion; and a puller head member having a pair of laterally extending pin projections slidable in said L-shaped channels, having a blind shouldered channel in one face extending normal to a centerline through said pin projections and terminating substantially centrally thereof slidable over said reduced diameter portion between said head means and the end portion of said threaded shaft, and having threaded means adaptable for holding an ele ment to be pulled against the other face, said puller head being slidably detachable from said yoke member and said threaded shaft in one extreme rotated position of said threaded shaft.
