UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
XVILLTAM HENBY PAULDING, OF PEEKSKILL, NEVVYORK.
- WINDOViL-SHADE.
MSPECIFICATION' forming' part of Letters Patent No. 281,128, dated July 10, .1883. V Application filed May 4,1883. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. PAULD- ING, a eitizen of the United States, and a resident of Peekskill, in the County of Vvestches ter and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVindow-Shades; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referenee being had to the accoinpanying drawings, which form a part of this spccification, and in which- Fignre 1 represents the lower part of a windowshade provided with my improvement, showing` one of the ends of the guide-rods in section. Fig. 2 is a cross-section through the slotted window-casing. Fig'. 3 is a perspeotive view of one side of the casing with part of the shade or curtaii1;and`Fi'g. 4 is a similar view, showing a modified construction of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. i
My invention has relation to the fixtures for window-shades or roller-curtains, and is more especially adapted for railway-car windows.
Itconsists in providing,` the shade or curtain with a peculiarly-constructed guide-rod at its lower end, having adjustable beveled heads at its ends, which work in dovetailed groovcs or ways in the sides of the windowcasing, substantiallyas and for the purpose hereinafter more fully described and elaimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A denotes the sidcs of the windowcasino", which are grooved longitudinally, (s shown at B, said grooves being` dovetailed in cross-section, as clearly shown i n Fig. 2 of the drawings. The curtain is attached at its upper end to a spring-roller, C, which may have stops or not, as may be desired. XVhen used with stops, the groore B is made straight, as shown in Fig. 3; but when the roller is used without the stops, one side of the groove should be notched or recessed to form ratchets or eatches E, adapted to engage the projecting ends of rod D, at the lower end of the curtain, in substantially the same manner as in the cnrtain-fixture for which Letters Patent of the United States No. 269,'703 were granted to me on the 26th day of December, 1882. This construcends of rod D, which is suitably fastened in the lower end of the shade, have screw-threaded tenons d, upon which are screwed the heads F, which are beveled at f to fit the dovetailed Ways B. This construction perniits of the adjustnient of the guideheads F so as to fit snugly in their dovetailed ways, which not only prevents the lower end of the curtain from flapping inside and out when the tra-in is in motion, but also prevents it from moving sidewise within the frame or casing, so that it will at all times move true up and down. The upper part of the casing is cut away on one side of the groove B to form a recess, b, coinniunicating with said groove, through which the beveled and adjustable heads Fmay be inserted into the dovetailed ways or grooves B.
It is obvious that while this improvement is contemplated more particularly for the windows of railway-cars, it may be used with advantage also for the windows of dwellings or other buildings; and in order to conceal the joint between the screw-threaded ends of rod I) and its adjnstable heads, when these are screwed out from the rod to properly fit the Ways B, a sleeve or collar of thin metal may be placed upon rod D and the adjacent ends of the adjnstable heads, as I have shown at G in 1 and 2.
Having thus described my invention, I claiin and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination of the spring-roller C, curtain, guide-rod D, having; extensible beveled heads F, and casing A, provided with dovetailed grooves or ways B, adapted to fit said heads, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and set forth.
2. The combination of the spring-roller G, curta-in, guide-rod D, extensible beveled heads F, collars G, and casing provided with dovetailed grooves or ways B, adapted to fit the adjustable heads F, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claiin the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my Signature in presence of two witnesses.
W'ILLIM PAULDING.
