United States Patfifl To This-invention generally relates to new and useful improvements in supporting devices, and more specifically a garment hanger which is an improvement over my prior patent,,No. 2,589,564, issued March 18, 1952.

An object of the present invention is to provide a garmenthanger for hanging garments such as trousers,

skirts or the like on' a support, such as the interior of a p opening 30, thereby securing the U-shaped projections or closet door wherein the garment hangers may be disposed in a position perpendicular to the door for positioning the garments thereon and supporting the garments during the selection thereof and folded to a position alongside the supporting surface and moved toward such supporting surface and retained in this folded position.

A further object of the present invention is to provide an improved construction in accordance with the preceding object wherein a plurality of supporting frames are pivotally and slidably mounted in pairs of vertically aligned bearings wherein each of the frames is provided with a projecting member which permits swinging past the ends of the bearing supports when the bearings and the hanger frames are at their outermost position and which engages the bearing supports when the bearings and frames are moved to a position generally parallel to the support and pushed inwardly, thereby retaining the garment hanger frames and the garments thereon alongside the supporting surface in generally overlapping relation.

Other objects of the present invention will reside in its simplicity of construction, efliciency and ease of operation, adaptation for its particular purposes and its relatively inexpensive manufacturing costs.

These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the garment hanger of the present invention;

Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially upon a plane passing along section line 2-2 of Figure 1 illustrating the details of construction of the device of the present invention;

Figure 3 is a detailed sectional view taken substantially upon a plane passing along section line 33 of Figure 1 illustrating the construction of the U-shaped portions with the slidable bearings therein;

Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 illustrating the folded position of the garment supports and the position of the bearings;

Figure 5 is a detailed sectional view taken substantially upon a plane passing along section line 5--5 of Figure 3 illustrating the details of one of the bearing members; and

Figure 6 is a detailed sectional view taken substantially upon a plane passing along section line 6-6 of Figure 2 illustrating the details of the garment clamps.

With reference to the accompanying drawings, the

numeral 10 generally designates the garment hanger of the present invention including a pair of outer vertically disposed supporting straps 12 and 14 and a central supporting strap 16, all of which are positioned in coplanar relation and interconnected by upper and lower interconnecting straps or members 18 and 20. The upper end of the center strap 18 is provided with a grip member 22 connected thereto by hinge means 24 for positioning over the upper edge of a supporting door 26 or any other suitable supporting surface, thereby supporting the garment hanger 10 in a detachable manner.

The interconnecting straps Hand 20 are each provided with an elongated U-shaped channel forming mem ber 28 having a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings 30 therein. Disposed in each of the U-shaped chan: nel forming members 28 is an elongated rod 32 having forwardly projecting .U-shaped portions 34 extending through the longitudinally spaced openings 30. Contrally in the rod 32 is a depending U-shaped projection 36 engaging the front surface of the central strap '16 and extending behind a cross-strap 38 bridging the central portions 34 in perpendicular relation to the supporting surface 26. The ends of the rods 32 are offset, as indicated by the numeral 40 and project through struck-out loop-shaped portions 42 for securing the ends of the rods 32 in position on the outer straps 12 and 14.

Slidably mounted in each of the U-shaped portions 34 is a bearing member 44 having a rounded outer end 46 and a fiat inner end 48 together with a peripheral recess 50 extending around the rounded end and the side edges of the bearing 14 and slidably receiving the U-shaped portion 34 of the wire rod 32. The bearings 44 are arranged in vertically disposed pairs in the vertically disposed U-shaped portions 34 which are in alignment.

A garment supporting frame, generally designated by the numeral 52, is supported in each pair of vertically aligned bearings and includes a horizontal portion 54, an inwardly and upwardly inclined portion 56' and a vertical portion 58 all formed from a single piece of material wherein the vertical portion 58 extends through apertures 60 in the bearings 44 for journaling the same therein. The inner end of the horizontal portion 54 is bent around the vertical portion 58 in the form of an eye, as designated by the numeral 62, and terminates in a depending vertical projection 64 which extends in spaced parallel relation to the bottom end of the vertical portion 58 and is so arranged that it will pass around the outer end of the U-shaped portion 44 and the rounded end 46 of the bearings 44 when the bearings 44 are in the outermost ends of the U-shaped portions 34. However, when the frame 52 is pivoted to a position generally parallel to the supporting surface 26, the bearings 44 may be pushed inwardly wherein the projections 64 will then engage the outer edges of the legs of the U-shaped portion 34, thereby retaining the frame 52 in a position alongside the supporting surface 26.

A pair of clamps 66 are provided on the horizontal portion 54 for engaging trousers, skirts or similar garments designated by the numeral 68. These clamps 66 include spring members 70 urging the clamping surfaces 72 together in engagement with the garment 68.

It will be noted that depending projection 64 extends in front of the U-shaped portion 34 of the wire rod 32 thereby acting as a stabilizer to prevent inward sliding movement of lower bearing member 44 due to the weight of the article supported and the frame 52 for retaining the portion 54 in horizontal position.

The device may be constructed of any suitable material, such as sheet metal or the like, and provides a foldable and collapsible support for a plurality of garments 68 on a closet door 26 or the like wherein the supporting Patented Aug. 13, 1957 frame 52 may be supported in perpendicular or parallel relation to the door 26.

Further, since'numerous modifications and changes. will readily occur to those skilled in, the art, it is not'desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and:
