Cl. 131-113 This invention relates to a smokers, appliance and has for its primary object to filter, cool and moisten smoke before it reaches the mouth of the user.

Another object is to enable the appliance to be employed with any suitable smoke generating device, such as a pipe, cigar or a cigarette.

Referring to the drawings in detail, in the form of the invention illustrated in Figure 1, the numeral designates an upstanding receptacle adapted to hold a body of water and including an open top, a closed bottom 11, and an upstanding wall 13 extending about the Perimeter of the bottom 11 and carried by the bottom. A domeshaped cover 14 closes the open top of the receptacle 10 and is removably mounted on the upper end of the receptacle wall 13. As shown, the upper end of the wall 13 has an upstanding internally screw threaded portion 12 which is threadedly engaged by the internally screw threaded boss 16 carried by the cover 14. The cover 14 is provided with a smoke inlet passage 30 which has one end in communication with the interior of the receptacle 10 and has the other end in communication with the atmosphere. The cover 14 has adjacent the upper end an open ended bore 18 extending transversely therethrough, the other end of the inlet passage 30 being in communication with the bore 18 adjacent the one open end 22 thereof. The other open end 20 of the bore 18 receives one end of a tubular stem 28.

Extending about the interior of the cover 14 adjacent the lower end thereof is an annular groove 32 in which is seated the bounding edge of a horizontally disposed bafile plate 34, the plate carrying a hollow dome 36. The plate 32 and dome 36 together with the interior of the cover 14 form a smoke chest 24. The dome 36 is provided with spaced smoke passages 38 which establish communication with the interior of the receptacle 10 and the smoke chest 24. The plate 34 has spaced drain holes 38' for the passage of condensed moisture therethrough. A vertically disposed pipe 42 is positioned within the receptacle 1t) and has its upper end in communication with the said one end of the passage 30 and has the lower end spaced above the. bottom 11 of the receptacle 10. I pipe 42 terminates in an upper nipple 40 which is attached to the said one end of the passage 30. Circumposed about and slidably engaging the pipe 42 is a tube 46. An inverted cup member 48 surrounds the portion adjacent the lower end of the pipe 42 and is carried by such pipe portion. The open end of the cup member 48 is closed by a porous filter 50, the lower end of the pipe 42 being spaced above the filter 50. Carried by the pipe 42 in closing relation to the lower end thereof is a flap valve 44.

The cover 14 is provided with an outlet passage 26 which is in communication with the interior of the smoke chest 24 and has one end in communication with the bore 18. It is to be noted that the smoke passages 38 are out of alignment with the cover outlet passage 26, but are adjacent the latter passage, and further, that the wall of the smoke chest is in communication with the atmosphere for cooling the smoke and condensing the water vapor. Means is provided on the other end of the bore 18 for attachment of a pipestem thereto comprising a portion of the bore 18 adjacent the other open end 20 thereof and into which is removably received the one end of the tubular stem 28. Means is also provided on the other end of the bore 18 for attachment of a smoke generator thereto, such means embodying the portion of the bore 18 adjacent the one open end 22 into which is received an end of a holder designated generally 52 for a smoke generator, the generator having a smoke passage 58 which communicates with the other end of the inlet passage 30. The holder 52 comprises an elongated cylindrical body 54 having a socket 56 opening through its end remote from the open end 22, and extending through the cylindrical body 54 and communicating with the socket is the smoke passage 58 which, as illustrated in Figure 2, extends laterally as at 60 and opens through the side of the body 54 for communication with the passage 30. By rotating the body 54 within the open end 22, that the angular extension 64) of the passage 58 may be moved into and out of registration with the passage 30, according to the desire of the user. By using a similar structure and substituting a pipe bowl for the socket 56, the smoke generator may take the form of a smoking pipe rather than a cigarette, as suggested at C in Figure l. The stem 28 is provided with a tubular bit 62 which is adapted to enter the mouth of the smoker in a conventional manner.

In use with a cigarette C in the socket 56 and lighted, and the receptacle 1!) containing suflicient water to extend above the cup member 48 as shown in Fig. 2, the smoker upon drawing through the bit 62 will create a draft through the passage 58, smoke inlet passage 30, pipe 42 and by the flap valve 44 into the cup member 48. Passing through the flap valve 44, the smoke will enter the inverted cup member 48 and will be drawn through the porous filter 50 which will remove undesirable substances. Upon leaving the filter 50, the smoke will be washed in the water contained within the receptacle 10 from which it will pass upwardly through the dome 36 and holes 38 into the smoke chest 24. Passing through the smoke chest 24, the smoke will pass through the opening 26 and thence through the open end 20 into the stem 28 and the bit 62. Thus, the smoke will be filtered, Washed, moistened and cooled before it reaches the mouth of the smoker.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

What is claimed is:

l; In a smokers appliance, an upstanding receptacle adapted to hold a body of water and having an open top, a removable cover closing the open top of said receptacle, said cover having an open ended bore extending transversely therethrough and being provided with an inlet passage having one end in communication with the in- '3 V a or terior'of said cover and having the other end in communication with the bore adjacent one of the open ends thereof, a horizontally disposed bafile plate positioned within and secured to the inner wall of said cover and forming with said cover a smoke chest, there being drain holes in said bathe plate for the discharge of a condensed moisture therethrough, said cover being provided with an outlet passage and having one end in communication with the cover bore, a hollow dome carried by said baflle plate and extending upwardly into said smoke chest, said dome having spaced smoke passages out of alignment with and adjacent to said cover outlet passage, the Wall of the smoke chest being in communication with the atmosphere for cooling the smoke and condensing the water vapor, and a vertically disposed pipe positioned within said receptacle and having the upper end in communica tion with said one end of said cover inlet passage and having the lower end spaced above the bottom of said receptacle.

A smokers appliance according to claim 1, which 9 includes in addition a tubular stern reinovably received in a the other open-end of said cover bore, and a smoke generator received in the one end of the cover bore, the generator having a smoke passage in communication with the other end of the cover inlet passage.
