SPEIFICATON forming part of Letters `ll'acent No. 280,232, dated June 26, 1883.
Applicationfiled March 30, 188i (No model.)
To all zoll/0m it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, HENRY PARKER, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Combined Pair of Drawers and Abdo1ninal Belt, of which the following is a specilication.
This improvement consists in the combination, with a pair of drawers, of an abdominal belt comprising a portion or portions permanently secured to the drawers, andan elastic portion or elastic portions detachably connected to the other 'portion or portions and to the drawers. The elastic portion or portions may be detachably connected by lacing to the other portion or portions of the belt, and said elastic portion or portions may be buttoned tothe back of the drawers. Bones or splints may be attached to the elastic portion or portions, so that they will extend transversely thereto and prevent rumpling or twisting thereof.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is I a front view of a pair of drawers and a belt embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a back l view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a side view thereof. Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Av designates the pair of drawers: l They are either made of material which will so easmore rigid material they will be made sufciently large in the waist to avoid exerting any material pressure upon the wearer. The front of the upper or bodyl portion of these drawers has applied to it bands or facings B B', of satin, jean, or other material which will not stretch easily. AS here shown, the drawers have an opening in the front, and hence two of these bands or facings are applied-one on each side of the opening-instead of asingle band or facing extending entirely across the front ofthe drawers. Buttons a and button-holes b provide for fastening the drawers at the fron y. The bands or faeings B B form the front portions of the belt.
C designates the rear portion of the.belt. It is made of a loosely woven or knitted fabric comprising strands of india-rubber of the kind commonly known as india rubber cloth.77 This india-rubber cloth has bones or splints affixed to it, so as to keep it from rumpling or twisting. These bones o r splints may be fastened to it by laying them against the india-rubber cloth, and sewing pieces of cloth, c, over them to the india-rubber cloth. The back portion of the drawers is shown as provided with tabs d, which extend over 6o the middle of the rear portion, C, of the belt. These tabs .are provided with button-holes which engage with buttons e on the rear portion, C, ofthe belt. At the ends of the rear portion, O, of the belt are eyeletsf. The rearedges 6 5 of the front portions, B B, of the belt extend from the drawers, like tabs, and are provided with eyelets y. Laces D, passed through the cyeletsf g, secure the front and rear portions of the belt together, and afford provision for 7o enlarging or diminishing the belt to suit the convenience of the wea-rer. Owing to the laces D and the tabs d, the rear portion of the belt is detachably secured to the front p ortion and to the drawers; hence the drawers may be washed without entailing the washing or wetting of the said rear portion of the belt.
. The tabs also serve to prevent the wrinkling or twisting of the belt,
Instead of a single portion of elastic mate- 8o rial at the rear of the belt, I may use a number of portions of elastic material disposed at intervals around the belt, and detachably secured in place.
If desirable, the drawers may be made of jean or other equally unyielding material, and providedopposite the elastic portion or portions of the belt with gores of knitted or other material capable of stretching. Then the drawers can be made to snugly iit the person 9o of the wearer.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ish
l. The combination, with apair of drawers, of an abdominal belt comprising a portion or portions permanently secured to the drawers, and an elastic portion or elastic portions detachably connected to the other portion or portions and to the drawers, substantially as speci` lied.
2. The combination, with a pair of drawers, of an abdominal belt comprising a portion or IOO portions permanently secured to the drawers across the front, and an elastic portion or elastic portions extending across detachably secured by lacing` to the first-inen- 5 tioned portion or portions of the belt, and
of an abdominal belt comprising an elastic porthe back, andtion or elastic portions, and bones or splints 1o attached to said elastic portion or portions, and extending transversely thereof to prevent runipling or twisting, substantially as speciiied.
HENRY PARKER.
