SEPARABLE FASTENER CLOSER Filed March 20, 1958 KLC P" 7 INVENTOR enn 7:85.1 6 rryn BY im 4M ATTORNEYS SEPARABLE FASTENER CLOSER Jennie E. Perryn, Tampa, Fla.
Application March 20, 1958, Serial No. 722,799
1 Claim. (Cl. 294-1) The present invention relates to separable fastener closers, and particularly to devices for moving the slider of a separable fastener.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a tool for engaging and moving the slider of a separable slide fastener with the slider in an otherwise inaccessible position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a separable slide fastener slider moving device which can be attached and operated with one hand.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described above having means thereon for moving the slider handle to a horizontal position prior to the grasping of the slider handle by the tool.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent in the following specification when considered in the light of the attached drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention showing the engagement of the device with a slider handle.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view showing the device in clamping engagement with a slider handle.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view taken along the line 33 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary transverse sectional view taken along the line 44 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical section hired States Patent taken along the line 55 of Figure 4, looking in-the direction of the arrows.
Figure 6 is a front elevation of the clamping foot shown partly broken away for convenience of illustration.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures, the reference numeral 10 indicates generally a tool for grasping the handle 11 of a slider 12 used to close a separable slide fastener 13.
The tool 10 comprises an elongated tubular shank 14 having a hand grip 15 positioned on one end thereof. An upper jaw 16 is secured to the end of the tubular shank 14 opposite the hand grip 15 and extends laterally from the shank 14. The upper jaw 16 has a bore 17 formed therein communicating with the bore of the tubular shank 14.
The upper jaw 16 is provided with an outwardly and upwardly tapering wedge shaped nose 18 which can be engaged under a slider handle 11 to move the handle 11 to a generally horizontal position for grasping by the tool 10.
A rod 19 is positioned within the tubular shank 14 and extends through the bore 17 in the upper jaw 16. The rod 19 has a perpendicular ofiset upper end portion 20 which extends outwardly through a slot 21 formed in the tubular shank 14 and hand grip 15, as best shown in Figures 3, 4 and 5. The slot 21 has a laterally offset upper end 22 to receive the offset end portion 20 and secure it at the upper end of the slot 21.
The offset end portion 20 is provided with a knob 23 on the terminal end thereof to provide means for moving the rod 19 longitudinally of the tubular shank 14 as desired. A lower jaw 24 is fixedly secured to the lower end of the rod 19 in generally parallel relation to the upper jaw 16 and co-extensive therewith. The upper jaw 16 and the lower jaw 24 have the adjacent faces thereof serrated at 25 and 26, respectively, to provide a nonslip grip for the handle 11 when positioned between the upper jaw 16 and lower jaw 24, as best shown in Figure 2.
In the use and operation of the invention, the user, after donning the garment which is provided with a zipper 13 in the back thereof, reaches with one hand holding the hand grip 15 until the wedge shaped extension 18 engages the slider handle 11, as shown in Figure 1, and the handle 11 is moved to a horizontal position. The knob 23 is then actuated to move the lower jaw 24 away from the upper jaw 16 by sliding the offset end portion 20 of the rod 19 downwardly in the slot 21.
The tool 10 is then manipulated until the handle 11 of the slider 12 is positioned between the upper jaw 16 and the lower jaw 24 whereupon the knob 23 is moved upwardly in the slot 21 and seated in the laterally offset portion 22 thereof clamping the jaw 24 against the force of the jaw 16 with the slider handle 11 therebetween. The slider 12 is then moved upwardly by means of the tool 10 until the zipper 13 is completely closed whereupon the knob 23 is again manipulated to move rod 19 downwardly in the slot 21 releasing the jaw 24 from the handle 11.
The upper and lower jaws 16 and 24 may, if desired, be slightly magnetized to further assist in guiding the slider handle 11 into a position to be gripped and to assist in gripping the handle 11.
Having thus described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it should be understood that numerous structural modifications and adaptations may be resorted to without departing from the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A closer for the slider of a separable slide fastener comprising an elongated tubular shank, a rod slidably mounted in said shank and projecting from the lower end of said shank, a metallic jaw secured to the lower end of said shank and having a transverse serrated face thereon on the side thereof opposite said shank, a second metallic jaw secured to the lower end of said rod and having a transverse serrated face thereon on the side thereof secured to said rod, said jaws being arranged in vertically disposed relation with the faces thereof arranged in opposed relation, a wedge shaped extension formed on said first jaw at the end thereof opposite said shank and on the side thereof opposite said first named transverse face, said extension providing means for engaging and moving a zipper slider handle to horizontal position, and a hollow handle member fixedly secured to the upper end of said shank, said handle having a longitudinally extending slot therein, said rod being perpendicularly offset at its upper end, said laterally offset portion of said rod being disposed through said slot in said handle, said slot being laterally oifset at its upper end whereby said oifset portion of said rod can be moved into locking position.
