Description

(No H GOODMAN LOCK FOR FIRE ARMS.
Patented Nov. 20, 1883.
Ater
UNITED STATES 1 ATENT OFFICE.
HENRY GOODMAN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO DANIEL P. KANE,
OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,939, dated November 20, 1883.
Application filed July 28, 1883. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY GOODMAN, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Arms, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a device for adjusting the depth of the firing-notch, so that the gun may be adjusted to pull off with the application of any desired amount of force.
Reference is made to the claims for statement of invention.
Figure 1 is a side view of part of a gun with my improvement applied. Fig. 2 is a side view with part of the breech-frame broken away. Fig. 3 is a transverse section at 3 3, Fig. 2, somewhat reduced. Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective views of the eccentric. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the hammer-hub. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the adjustable slide by which the depth of the firing-notch is limited. Fig. 8 is an enlarged detail side View of part of the tumbler.
A is the breech-frame; B, the barrel; 0, the cock or hammer; D, the hammer-spring; E, the trigger; F, the sear-spring; G, the triggerguard.
H is the pivot-screw upon which the hammer works.
I is a cylindrical block, having bearing in the breech-frame, and through which the hammer pin or screw H passes centrally.
J is an eccentric on the inner end of the block, occupying a recess, T, in the side of the tumbler T. The recess has size sufficient to allow the eccentric to be turned around in it.
K is a sliding plate or slide fitting a dovetail groove, L, in the sideof the tumbler, and working on a pin, Z, that limits the movement of the slide K. The slide K is used to limit the depth of the firing-notch 0, for as the triggercatch 0 falls into the notch it impinges against the slide K. The position of the slide K in the tumbler is determined by the position of the eccentric J, whose periphery bears against the inner end of the slide. As means for turning the eccentric is shown a combined thumbpiece and pointer, P, that is moved over a segmental scale, S, whose numbers may indicate the amount of force (in pounds) required to pull off the trigger. The indication in Fig. 1 is that a force of three and a half pounds will be required to pull the trigger. It will be understood that the eccentric remains at rest during the movements of the hammer and trigger.
I claim as my invention-- 1. A hammer for fire-arms, having a tumbler formed with a recess inside the firing-notch, and an adjustable plate in said recess to regulate the depth of the said firing-notch, as set forth.
2. In a fire-arm, the combination of a hammer having a tumbler formed with a recess inside the firing-notch, an adjustable plate in said recess, and a recess surrounding the pivotpin, and a cylindrical block having bearing in the breech-frame, provided with an eccentric at its inner end to occupy the recess in the hammer surrounding the pivot-pin, the said block being turned to adjust the plate by means of the eccentric to regulate the depth of the firing-notch, as set forth.
3. In a fire-arm, the combination of a hammer having a tumbler provided with an adjustable plate inside the firingnotch, and a cylindrical block having an eccentric on its inner end to adjust the plate, and a pointer at the other end to indicate the position of the plate and depthof the firing-notch,as set forth.
4. In a fire-arm, the combination, with a hammer having a tumbler provided with an adjustable plate to regulate the depth of the firing-notch, and a cylindrical block having an eccentric to adjust the plate, and an indicator or pointer,of the frame provided with a scale, as set forth.
HENRY GOODMAN.
