Description

May 12, 1959 N. THOMPSON 2,885,704
COMB WIPER Filed Sept. 29, 1955 INVENTOR. NORM/IN- L. THOMPSON BY E 14 7'7 OR/VE Y United States Patent O COMB WIPER Norman L. Thompson, Garden City, Mich.
Application September 29, 1955, Serial No. 537,465
3 Claims. (Cl. 15-1213) This invention relates generally to an enclosure means for a cosmetic bottle, and, more particularly, to a combination bottle closure and comb wiper for liquid hair dressing preparations.
Heretofore, in order to apply a liquid hair dressing lotion to ones hair, it has been necessary to first put the lotion on the hands of the user and then to work the lotion into the hair, as desired. This method of applying a hair dressing lotion to ones hair is messy and inconvenient. Accordingly, it is an important object of this invention to provide a closure for a liquid hair dressing lotion bottle, and the like, which is adapted to receive a comb for the application thereto of the hair dressing lotion, and to wipe off the excess dressing therefrom when the comb is removed therefrom, whereby the user may apply the hair dressing lotion on his hair without having it touch his hands.
It is another object of this invention to provide a closure for a liquid hair dressing lotion bottle which is provided with an elongated opening therethrough to permit a comb to be inserted inside the bottle for engagement with the hair dressing lotion, and, a comb wiper means disposed inside the closure for wiping the excess dressing that is on the side of the comb, but permitting the hair dressing between the comb teeth to remain on the comb for application to the users hair.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a closure means of the class described which may be applied to any size hair dressing lotion bottle.
It is a still further object of this invention to provide a closure means incorporating a comb wiper, which is simple of structure, economical of manufacture, durable and highly eflicient in use.
Other objects, features and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following detailed description and appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the specification wherein like reference numerals designate corresponding parts of the several views.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a hair dressing lotion bottle provided with a closure and comb wiper made in accordance with the principles of the invention;
Fig. 2 is an elevational sectional view of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1, taken along the line 22 thereof; and
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the structure illustrated in Fig. 2, taken along the line 33 thereof.
Before explaining in detail the present invention, it is to be understood, that the invention is not limited in its application to the details of construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, since the invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced or carried out in various ways. Also, it is to be understood, that the phraseology and terminology employed herein is for the purpose of description and not limitation.
In the drawings, the numeral represents a conven- "ice tional hair dressing lotion bottle which is provided with a combined closure and comb wiper 12 made in accordance with the principles of the invention. The illustrated embodiment comprises a top part 14 and an integral cylindrical downwardly extending part 16 which is threaded in the usual manner so as to be threadably mounted on the thread 18 of the bottle 10. The closure 12 may be made from any suitable material, as plastic, 2. light-weight metal, and the like.
The closure 12 is provided with a pair of elongated, horizontally disposed openings or slits 20 therethrough, which are diametrically spaced apart in the side wall part 16 of said closure. Fixedly mounted in the closure 12, adjacent the slits 20, is a pair of comb wiper elements 22 and 24 provided with lips 26 which extend into the slits 20. The comb wiper elements 22 and 24 are circular on the outer edge thereof and straight along the inner edge thereof, and are made from any suitable material, as foam rubber and the like, which will not react with the hair dressing lotion and which will wipe the excess hair dressing lotion from the sides of the comb.
The comb wiper elements 22 and 24 may be cemented in place around the outer edges which abut the closure side wall 16, as at 25. In addition, a supporting plate 28, shaped similar to said elements, may be mounted against the lower comb wiper element 24, and be held in place by the inwardly extending circular lip 30 which may be formed integral with the closure Wall 16.
In the practice of the invention, a closure as 12 could be used on a hair dressing lotion or on a hair liquid shampoo bottle. In order to apply the lotion or shampoo to the inside edges 31 of the comb teeth, of a comb as 32, the comb would first be inserted inwardly through one of the slits 20, between the comb wiper elements 22 and 24. The comb 32 could be inserted until a part of it was in the opening 33 between the two sets of comb wiper elements. The bottle 10 would then be turned upside down to permit the fluid lotion or shampoo to pass over the comb portion in the opening 33. The comb could then be moved inwardly again to bring more of the comb in contact with the fluid. After the comb has been treated with the lotion, as aforedescribed, it may be withdrawn from the closure 12, and, as it is withdrawn, the comb wiper elements 22 and 24 will wipe the lotion from the sides of the comb, while permitting some of the lotion to be retained between the teeth of the comb, as at 31, whereby it may be applied to the hair of the user by combing it in the hair. The afore described procedure would be repeated as many times as desired.
The foam or sponge rubber wiper blades and elements of the disclosed invention are preferably finished or covered with a smooth finish on the outer sides thereof, so as to prevent the hair dressing lotion from being absorbed into the pores of the rubber.
While it will be apparent that the preferred form of the invention herein disclosed is Well calculated to fulfill the objects above stated, it will be appreciated that the invention is susceptible to modification, variation and change without departing from the proper scope or fair meaning of the subjoined claims.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination of, a container for holding a hair dressing lotion; a closure for said container; a rectangular opening in said closure communicating with the interior of said container; said opening being formed through the side wall of the closure; and, a comb wiper means fixedly mounted inside said closure adjacent said opening, whercby, when a comb is inserted through said opening for application thereon of the hair dressing lotion in the container, the comb wiper means will remove the excess hair dressing lotion from the comb when it is removed.
2. The invention as set forth in claim 1, wherein: a second opening is provided in the side wall of the closure at a point diametrically opposite to the first named opening; and, a comb wiper means is disposed adjacent said second opening.
3. A closure for a hair dressing lotion bottle comprising: a top portion; a side wall portion integral with said top portion and provided with thread means for attachment to a bottle; an opening in the side wall of said .closure communicating with the inside of the bottle on References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS Kennish Ian. 24,
