SPEGIFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,285, dated November 13, 1883.

To all? whom it may concern Be it,known that I, MoRELL A. WEBB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marengo, in the county of McHenry and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Book- Mark, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to book-marks, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient mark that will be automatically operated by the closing of the book, and that will not mar the appearance of the latter. i

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book having my improved mark, the book being open. Fig. 2 is asectional view of the same, taken from the top to the bottom. Fig. 3 is atransverse sectional view, showing the automatic operation of the mark in dotted lines. Fig. 4 is another transverse sectional view, showing the mark in position for indicating a plurality of places at one time. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of the marking-strip, detached. Referring to the drawings, A designates the cover of the book,'which can be of any desired construction, and B designates the'leaves, which can be secured to the cover in any desired manner.

happens'to be opened a small portion of the strip will be exposed. as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, where it passes across from the slot in the page at one side to the slot in the page at the other, and the leaves can be conveniently turned in either direction without interference with the marking-strip. n When 7 the book is closed, the exposed portion of the strip will automatically bend up between the pages at the place where thebook was opened, instead of sliding through the slot, andthe loop thus automatically formed will enable the book to be opened at the exact place at which it was closed.

With this mark a number of loops can be formed in the strip, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, to mark a corresponding number of places, and in large books-such-as ledgers, &c.two or more marks can be used-for instance, one at the top of the book and one at the bottom. By drawing on either of the projecting. ends of the strip the loops that'have formed between the pages or leaves can be drawn out.

I claim as my invention- 1. As an improvement in book-marks, the combination, with a book having a slot passing through its leaves, of a marking-strip passed through the said slot, and having its ends projecting from the same, the said strip being arranged to slide in the said slot to form loops between the pages, as set forth.
