To 6155 whom it may concern:
, Be it known that I, ALBERT J-. SMART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenfield, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screw-Cutting Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to that class of machines which are made use of for cutting screw-threads on bolts; and the nature thereof consists in certain improvements in the con struction of the same, hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, in which corresponding parts are designated by similar letters,Figure l is a front elevatiomwith plate F removed from disk A; Fig. 2, a plan or top view; and Fig. 3, asection on line as m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 illustrates a detail of the device.
The die-holders A A are provided with.
tubular journals,which rotate within bearings formed upon the carriages B, and have radial slots or receptacles D for the'reception of .the cutting-dies O. The cuttingdies are provided with holes a, for the reception of the ends of screws E, which work-in internal screws cut in the circular plates F, and these circular plates are firmly secured to the die-holders by means of screws H.
The carriages 13 travel upon ways formed in or on the head-stock I, and are made to approach or recede from each other, as may be desired, by means of the shaft K, upon which are out right and left handed screw-threads e e, which work in corresponding left and right handed internal screw-threads cut in the said carriages.
The head-stock I "may be arranged to slide in the shears of the machine with which it is used in the manner which is well known to those skilled in the art to which my invention relates.
The dieholders A may be rotated by hand or in any convenient manner, in such a way as to bring any two of the dies opposite to each other, and when the dies arebrought opposite to each other the disks or holders may be held firmlyin position a means of the tance between thecntting-edges of the dies may be adjusted with facility and accuracy by means of set-screws L, which work in internal screw-threads cut in the die-holders. These set-screws, when secured in any desired position, prevent the die-holders from approaching any nearer to each other than is required.
These set or adjusting screws are in number equal to dies used, and each of them is arranged in a plane parallel to a diameter drawn through the center of the die-holding disks, and also parallel to lines drawn radially through the centers of the dies, so that when the dies are in the required position for cutting, a horizontal plane drawn through the centers of the dies will be parallel to a horizontal plane drawn throughthe adj ustingscrews adjacent to such dies. It will thus be seen that each die has an independent horizontal adjustment, their cutting may be regulated with the greatest nicety, nuts or bolts may be madeto fit closely or loosely, as is desired, and the effect of wear on the dies corrected. The adjustment and movement of the dies in a horizontal plane passing through the centers of the die-holding disks render it possible to use two dies instead of three or more for effecting the cutting of the screw, and as the dies are removable they may be detached and replaced with facility. The operation ofthc device will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates without illustrating or describing the construction of the mechanism made use of for holding and actuating the work to be operated, or other appliances which form partsof the machines with which my invention may be combined and to which it may be i tance between the cutting-edges of the die, and 100 2', seams 7 at which the said set-screws come in contact with each other and thus adjust the normal position of the dies. After the thread has been formed upon the bolt or pipe the die holders may be readily separated by rotating the crank-shaft in such a manner as to remove the dies from the work and allow it to be with drawn or detached.
Instead of the dies, tools for cutting offbolts may be secured to the die-holding disks A.
M and N designate appliances of this kind, which are secured to the diet-holders by means of bolts 0 and nuts I.
The rotary cutters S S revolve in bearings formed in or on the cutter-holders M, secured to the disk A, and the rotary cutterT revolves in a bearing formed in or on the cutter-holder N. These cutting-off devices are adjusted in position opposite to each other and made to approach and recede from each other, as hereinbefore' described with reference to the dies.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The combination of the two die-holders, (each'of which is provided with a tubular j ournal which rotates within bearings formed upon the carriages, and each of which has a series of radial slots for the reception of cutting-dies, and the removable dies, whereby the dies may be arranged in a horizontal plane for cutting and be replaced or interchanged with facility as and forthe purposes described;
2. The combination of the die-holding disks A A, the dies-G, the plates F, provided with screws H and E, the carriages B, and the screw-shaft K, as and for the purposes described.
