COVER FOR VESSELS.
SPECIFIGATIONforming part of Letters Patent No, 288,139, dated November 6, 1883.
' Application filed July 6, 1m. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
- Be it knownthat I, AUcUs'rns F; TRIPP, of the city of Buffao, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Covers for Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the construction of a locking device whereby a detachable cover can be readily secured to a vessel; and it has for its object to produce a simple and reliable locking device which can be cheaply manufactured. r
My invention consists of the improvement in the locking device which will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the upper portion of a vessel provided with my improved cover. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view, and Fig. 4 a perspective view, of the same. 1
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
A representsthe upper portion of a vessel, and B th e removable cover, resting loosely upon the upper end of the vessel, the cover being preferably provided on its under side with a marginal. depression or annular groove, 12, by which it rests upon the wired upper edge of the vessel, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
G 0 represent ears attached to the vessel on diametricallyopposite sides, and D the bail, provided with a handle, d, and pivoted in the ears 0 G in a well-known manner.
E represents a handle secured to the upper 3 side of the cover B by a Wire, e, extending diametrically across the upper side of the cover,
and provided with end portions, f, which eX- tend beyond the edge of the cover.
5; represents notches formed inthe sides of the bail-ears O, for the reception" of the end portions, f, of the wire 6. The notchesg are formed in the two baitears, on opposite sides of thesanie, as clearly represented in Fig. 4,
so that the ends f of the wire 6 can be engaged in both of said notches, or be disengaged therefrom by turning the cover B on the top of the vessel A. Upon placing the cover B on the vessel A and turning it so as to engage the ends ff of the wire in the notches g of the ears 0, the cover is securely attached to the vessel, and upon turning the cover in an opposite direction it is released. The wire 0 is secured to the cover B by solderingits depressed portions e to the cover, or in any other suitable manner.
The construction of the lock is very simple, and as it is formed by the parts which areused .for attaching the handles to the vessel and cover its employment does not increase the cost of the utensil.
My improved lock is very suitable for the covers of crealners and other vessels used in dairies; but it may be employ ed in a variety of vessels in which detachable covers are used.
I claim as my invention The combination, with a vessel having notched ears 0, of a cover provided with a handle, E, and a wire, 6, secured to the cover, and having projecting ends f f, adaptedto enter the notches of the ears, substantially as set forth.
A. F. TRIPP.
