SLOTTED SEWING NEEDLE Morris R. Winkler, Far Rockaway, N. Y.
Application June 30, 1955, Serial No. 519,082
1 Claim. (Cl. 223-102).
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in sewing needles.
More particularly, the present invention proposes the construction of an improved sewing needle which can quickly and easily be threaded by touch or by sight and which will securely hold the thread once threaded while sewing.
As a further object, the present invention proposes forming the needle with an end threading slot so that the needle can be threaded from the end of the needle rather than through the eye or eye opening.
Another object of the present invention proposes constructing the needle with a V-shaped end notch at the eye end of the needle for finding the end threading slot by touch or by sight.
Still another object of the present invention proposes forming the needle with side threading slot openings connecting with both the eye opening of the needle and with the end threading slot opening for threading the needle by touch or by sight.
Another object of the invention proposes constructing the needle with two spaced members at the eye end of the needle adapted and arranged to form the eye opening, the end threading slot opening, the end notch and the side threading guide slot openings of the needle.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings,
and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary front elevational view of the eye end of a needle constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention.
Fig.- 2 is a side elevational view of the structure shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an end view of the structure shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but illustrating a modification of the present invention.
Fig. 5 is an end view of the structure shown in Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on line 6--6 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 2 of the structure shown in Fig. 4. I
Fig. 8 is a rear view of the structure shown in Figs. 4 and 7.
Fig. 9 is a sectional view taken on line 99 of Fig. 8.
The needle, in accordance with the first form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, has a shaft or shank 15. v
The end portion 16 of the shank shown has an eye end 17 and the shank may be made either for use as a hand needle or as a needle for a sewing machine. The shaft may be of any cross section desired, round or elliptical.
eye opening 20 extends from the top 22 of the needle to the bottom 22' of the needle and the end threading slot opening 21 extends from one. side 23 to the other side 24 of the needle. the needle are, of-course, referred to only for convenience I in the description as the needle can be used in any position desired. Adjacent the end 25 of the needle eye opening 20 most remote from the eye end 17 of shaft 15 two side threading guides or slot openings 26 and 27 are provided. Theside threading slot openings 26 and 27' connect with both the eye opening 20 and the end threading slot opening 21, as best shown in Figs. 1 and 2 I The'needle can be threaded either from the eye end 17 through the end threading slot opening 21, in the regular manner through the needle eye opening 20, or through either of the side threading slot openings 26 or 27.
Themodification of the invention illustrated in Figs.
v4 to 9, inclusive, is characterized by the provision of a needle shaft 30having a cylindrical shank 31 and an eye end 32.
diameter of the shank exceeds the combined maximum lateral thickness of members 33 and 34 as clearly shown in Figs. 5 7. Thus, the free arms 39 and 40 cannot catch in the threads of the fabric being sewn when the needle is pushed or pulled through the fabric from, the shank end. In addition, the arms of the V-shaped members taper substantially to a point at end 32 with apexes 36 and 37 so close together that the needle can enter eye end first into a fabric with the shank following after and without the thread of the fabric catching in the guide notch 38.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications-may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my' invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States LettersPatent A quick threading sewing needle adapted for use in a sewing machine, comprising a shaft having a cylindrical shank and an eye, said eye being formed by two V'-shaped hook members, each member having a fixed arm integrallyjoined to the shank and a free arm juxtaposed to the fixed arm of the other member, said fixed and free The top, .bottom and sides of lessthan'the diameter of said shank, the; transverse thick 2,865,648 I a -4' v being"curved to definea substantially elliptical eye References Cited in the file of this patent opening, 'said' members having pointed'apexes at'the ex-f' UN STATES A EN treme ends thereof slightly spaced apart to form a thread guide notch for threading the needle, said notch com- 108337 Suplee 1370 nii'rni'cating with, said eye opening; thejnxtaposed' arms 5 6221080 RPSZGH 1899 defining slots'commnnicat'ing with'said eye opening, said 1'801'691 Rlpper 1931 jnxtaposed arms having .amaxirnum transverse thickness FOREIGN PATENTS ness' of'said members at said apexes being less than the 801,001 7 Germany y 1949 transverse thickness of said juxtaposed" arms. 10
