WITJ ESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM H. RODDEN, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.
STILE FOR WIRE FENCES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,226, dated October 9, 1883.
Application filed November 21, 1882. (No model.)
,this speeification Figure 1" being a side View of a portion of a wire fence constructed with my improvements; Fig. 2, a cross-section thereof in a plane indicated by the line a; m, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a crosssection in a plane indicated by the line y y, Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a partial side view, showing an addition to the construction shown in the other figures.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My improvements are adapted especially to wire and barbed-wire fences.
My improved stile for crossing over wire fences is constructed as follows: At any place or interval where it is desired to have a stile two posts are placed at a short distance apart, say three feet. Then, at proper heights, stepcleats or strips E E are attached to the adja cent posts on both sides, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, when the wires extend across these stileposts. These cleats or strips are to be so located as to be in front of and shield the wires fromthe feet of the persons crossing over, and
in the case of a barbed-wire fence to shield the persons against injury by the wirebarbs, Preferably, and as shown by dotted lines in the drawings, the rail or joint cap is here made to extend so as to overlap on the regular cap-rail at each end, where it is secured thereto. It
is also secured to the stile-posts through the regular cap-rail. This gives double strength and firmness to the fence where the stile is located, and where additional strength is required. This construction of stile is not only simple and cheap, but enables personsfemales as well as males-to cross over conveniently and safely; or my stile for crossing wire fences may be constructed on single posts by attaclr ing the cleats or steps thereto; but this will will not be as useful, safe, convenient, or du WV. H. RODDEN.
