It is an object of the present invention to provide a safety razor device which is adapted to hold a blade for use in shaving or for scraping flat surfaces and in combination with which provision is made for the clipping of the ends of cigars, a bottle cap opener and jaw portions for effecting a grip upon an article or for cracking nuts.

It is anotherobject of the invention to provide in a safety razor device a guard adapted to extend over the blade and to angle the blade properly for shaving and wherein the guard is shaped upon the parts being hinged together with the blade disposed within the handle, so as to fit the opposite end of the blade holding part and over the bottom cap removing portion so that the guard will be available and become a part of the device either when the device is in use or at times when not in use.

It is another object of the invention to provide in a safety razor device comprising hingeable parts wherein the handle part is formed of separable members and adapted to receive in a transverse manner at the end of the handle a blade so that the tool can be applied to a flat surface and the blade serving'to scrape the same.

Other objects of the invention are to provide a safety razor device having the above objects in mind, which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture, has a minimum number of parts, light in weight, easy to manipulate, durable, compact, efiicient and effective in use.

For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of the guard fixed over the end of the blade and handle parts to secure the blade part from being opened against the handle and to locate the guard in a storing position;

Fig. 7 is an enlarged end elevational view of the blade and of the blade retaining part;

Fig. 8 is an illustrative view showing the device being used to remove a bottle cap and the bottle cap part applied to the cap.

Referring now to the figures, 10 represents a handle part formed-of spaced spring-like members 11 and 12 providing a pocket 13 therebetween into which blade 14 of blade holder part 15 can be extended when the part Patented Nov. 25, 1958 upper end of the handle part 10 is tapered and provides narrow portions 17 and 18 which have frictional engagement with the sides of the blade part 15. The blade part 15 can accordingly be adjusted to any angular portion or position relative to the handle part 10 and will be retained in that position against collapse by this frictional engagement of the portions 17 and 18 therewith.

The handle part 10 is divided at its lower end to pro vide a slot 19 through which a blade 20 can be extended and arranged for the purpose of providing a scraping edge or cleaning a fiat surface. This blade 20 extends transversely of the handle part 10 and does not interfere with the closing of the blade part 15 into the handle. With the same closed, the device provides a handle and a scraping action of a fiat surface can be eifected in the conventional manner. The handle member 11 is transversely depressed as indicated at 21 to provide spacing means for holding the members 11 and 12 separated from each other and also to provide a stop against which the blade 20 may abut and be supported against inward displacement. Rivets 22 and 23 secure the members 11 and 12 together. These rivets extend through the depression 21 and are fixed to the member 12.

In order to permit a cigar to be cut, there are provided holes 24 and 25 in the respective members 11 and 12 through which the cigar can be extended for the purpose of being cut or clipped. By bringing the blade part 15' so that the blade 14 passes into the opening 13, the end of the cigar will be clipped and made ready for use.

The handle members 11 and 12 are respectively provided with serrated jaws 26 and 27 recessed to receive an object that may be engaged by serrated recess 28 of the part 15. By bringing the parts 10 and 15 together upon the object, work can be performed thereupon;

The blade holder part 15 is formed of folded metal so as to provide a slit 15 on its under edge at one end thereof. The outer end of the holder part 15 has one side longer than the other as indicated at 29 in order to facilitate the insertion of the blade into the slit 15'. The blade 14 has a folded mounting member '30 thereon, as indicated in Fig. 7. The holder part 15 provides a socket opening 31 in order to accommodate the folded mounting member 30 of the blade 14. The blade 14 is slid into the socket opening 31 and through the slit 15 from the end of the part 15 and the projection 29 guides and facilitates the insertion of the blade.

When the blade 14 is to be used for shaving, a guard 33 is inserted over the socket end of the blade part 15. This guard is preferably made of plastic and is generally of the same shape as the blade. When the guard 33 is extended over the end of the blade part 15, its lower edge 34 will extend below the edge of the blade 14. The face of the blade 14 will be supported against a face projection 35' and this projection extends longitudinally across the face of the guard and has an inclined face 36 in order to direct the blade edge toward the inner face of the guard and toward the edge 34 thereof. A slot 37 is provided adjacent the edge of the blade in order that any accumulation of soap can be removed from the edge of the blade through the guard.

The upper end of the guard is turned over to provide an opening or socket 39 for receiving and accommodating the socket end of the part 15 that retains the blade 14. The blade will extend through a slot 40 of the guard so as to rest against the face projection 35. The face projection 35 extends upwardly into the opening 39 and the slot 40 lies adjacent thereto.

This depressed portion of the memberll will also project into the recess 44of the bottle opening portion to prevent the bottle opening portio h 43 from passing through the space 13 between the members 11 and -12 of the handle part'ltl' I i The guard 33 is of such size that it can fit over the bottle opener portion43and also will run over the projectiohs 17 and 18 of the handle part in the manner shown in Fig. '6, and inthat way the guard may serve to prevent the blade part from being separated from the handle part when the device is not in use. This also provides means for the storing of the guard at times when it is not desired for use over the blade 14. The guard 33 has holes 46' which will register with the hole 46 in the can opener portion 43 of the blade part 15 and holes 16' that may register with the pivot pin 16. Accordingly, the nail can be extended through the guard as well as through the can opener portion 43 when the device is suspended thereupon. It will thus be apparent that the guard 33 not only can be used on the blade 14 when the blade is being used for shaving, but can also serve as a means by which the blade part 15 is locked into the handle 10.

It should now be apparent that there has been provided a safety razor device comprising a handle and blade parts which can jacklcnife into one another so that the device can be used in the manner of an old type straight edge razorL' It will also be seen that adequate means have been provided to protect the blade edge in the form of a guard that is extendible over the blade part. It will be seen that there has been added to this device means on the handle for holding a used blade in such a manner that it can be used for scraping surfaces.

The device also has added features which renderit a handyman's item. A grip can be had between the parts to perform work upon an object and through the recessed serrations on the parts. Also, the 'edge' of'the blade'par't 15 is formed with a bottle opening portion whereby a cap can be lifted from the bottle. The device can also be used for removing the ends of cigars to render them available for smoking.

While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the s pirit and scope of the present invention, as defined by the appended claim.

What is claimed is:
